One of the all time killer bass lines by an all time killer bass player. The fact that they were a "pretty boy" band didn't do justice to how great they were as musicians and writers.

There's an old VHS series called 'Classic Albums' where the artists, engineers, producers, etc... break down classic albums of theirs, in the studio with the multi-tracks and such. I've got quite a few of them, and one of them is for this album. After watching it, I had to take these guys off my 80's Eye Liner Pop list. They were actually quite good musicians. I'd really have liked to hear what they'd have done had they been around in the 70s or 90s instead.

Yeah, my high school band played this song... our singer was our bass player and I was lead guitar (and sang a few of the quirkier songs, like the Cars). But this bass line was too hard for our guy to play and sing, so we switched off and I played the bass and he sang and played the (rather easy) guitar part. Pretty much we sucked, and no way did I play like Taylor, but it was great fun!

Bassist John and drummer Roger Taylor (no relation) are still one of the greatest rhythm sections in the world. The bass line throughout this song is so deep and funky all the other instruments and the vocal can just ride along on its wobbly back.

One smoking bass line from John Taylor, I remember when this first came out it was soooo different from the 70s rock, this and Hungry Like the Wolf was some of the first videos on Mtv, they really kicked the 80s in along with The Cars, followed up by Miami Vice. Man take me back to the 80s.

Ooh, they should react to Jan Hammer's theme song for Miami Vice! There were a lot of electronic instrumentals from the '80s that fused rock with jazz and funk. Herbie Hancock was a jazz artist popular at that time with his song "Rockit."

Early Eighties was all about the Sax Spandau Ballet - True is another example. Bruce Springsteen had Clarence Clemons. Bowie, Foreigner, Glen Frey, Men at Work, Hall and Oates, George Michael,... and on and on. Many of my favorites from that time period had the Sax - and that's not even counting the Ska bands.

DURAN DURAN is still making albums and touring. In fact I will see them, again, this August 30 in Fort Worth Texas! This October they will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Duran Duran was a BEAST in the 80's, for a while they ruled MTV. My all time favorite 80's band. They are on my top 5 favorite bands of all time. Nick Rhodes (keyboards / synthesizer) and John Taylor (Bass player) formed the band when they were 16 and 17, still in school. Duran Duran blended post punk, new romantics, funk, and new wave into a style their own. Nobody sounds like Duran Duran. I am so happy they are FINALLY getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October of this year. They deserve it! Deep, deep Rabbit hole... you will enjoy the journey. You've only just scratched the surface.

Im a hardcore metalhead and I LOVE this song! But.. the real star of the video is the boat. It is a "Ketch" style sailing yacht built in Scotland in the 1930s. Its a true masterpiece of a vessel. Her name is Ilean and was used as a private charter most of her life. She eventually fell into disrepair during the 1990s and early 2000s due to neglect. In 2006(?) the owner of Panera Watch Co spotted her in an English harbor looking like she was doomed to the scrap yard. He recognized her from this video and bought her on the spot. He spent the next 2 years having her restored using 90% of the original wood!! In 2009 Ilean was entered in the Antigua Regatta yacht race. Some members of Duran Duran were there as Ilean crossed the finish line. They wept.

Duran Duran was huge during the '80s and some in the early '90s. They were new wave , synth pop, dance-rock, a little post-punk. Soulful singing style, too. New Romantic. They usually had good bass lines, funky guitars (normal for post-punk, new wave). Music you can dance to. You are hearing layers of music due to bass guitar, synthesizers, drums, etc Taylor one of the best bassist out there. Lex just described the typical new wave, post-punk singing style lol. Kind of nonchalant style at times. It's like new wave? No, it's definitely new wave! lol. They were one of the better new wave bands out there. Multiple style, too. Also the saxophone solos were common during the '70s, '80s, and '90s. Duran Duran were great musicians. This was one of many great videos that were hits. Next video for yall to see "Planet Earth", "Girls on Film", "My Own Way", "Violence of Summer", "Ordinary World", and a lot more.

As someone who has has followed this band FOREVER it’s definitely an iconic song & video. Definitely made a heavy imprint on MTV back then. I’ve heard this song broken down and really wild what they did individually. If you can play this bass line, you can play any bass line. They have so many songs that are actually as good if not better than some of the commercial hits. Lex talking about Simon’s singing cracked me up. It’s great live and always fun. Definitely a top album of the 80’s. (Loud and Proud, baby!). I think Lex would love New Religion off the Rio album. She’d love the instrumentation on that one. Not one bad song on that album.

Duran Duran was the first group to do on location MVs and always were very creative in pushing the artform of MVs forward. This song was meant to be a tribute to the United States according to the lead singer. They are a very artsy, creative bunch if you listen to them in interviews. I've loved them since they came out in the early 80s - they were hands down the biggest band in the 80s. Always being compared to the hysteria the beatles caused in the 60s

If anyone ever asks me to describe DD from now on, I’m just going to say “epic soundscaping.” You don’t even know how right you are. That’s kind of their strength. Please, please check out the live performance of Careless Memories from their concert film, As The Lights Go Down. You could pick anything from that film, but some of my favorite standouts are that song, Planet Earth, Girls on Film and New Religion. I hope you know this is a DEEP rabbit hole. Lot’s to check out.

This is the version that finally made it past the network censors, but because the previous version was reported on as being x-rated, the demand for everyone to watch this video when it first aired on MTV was huge. Years later you could catch a copy of the original version in pubs around the world, though not many in the USA. I saw the original version for the first time in Wales, UK in a pub, and while it was pretty racy, it wasn't x-rated. Several of the members of the band were well-known to date models and stars, and the video fits their life persona pretty well in that regard. They were the GQ flavor of New Wave and had many many hits. They also formed another band that pumped out some good hits too. The Basists also played with Robert Palmer for his hits like Simply Irresistible, another big MTV video. I believe Duran Duran would have existed without MTV, maybe nowhere near as big of a hit, which is probably true of all or most of the music that wasn't the typical genres like pop, country, and rock. We can also say that MTV probably wouldn't have made it without the bands like Duran Duran who brought millions flocking to their broadcast to see.

You're confusing this with the R rated Girls on Film video. One made for clubs with nudity and another "clean" version for TV. There is no other version of the Rio video.

Another one of those awesome 80's classics that, even being a fan of it as a teen, I didn't really appreciate its greatness as much as I should have back then. Now being older looking back, Its much more obvious how brilliant of a piece and work of art this was. As Lex pointed out, the bassline and all the different layers really sets this song apart from so many others at the time.

It's almost like jazz with synths, at least to me anyway. I love it though. It's one of my favorite songs, and really the whole album is a classic. Definitely all killer, no filler. I can see though why HLTW sounded more commercial. It was definitely more of a straightforward pop song.

As someone who sails I love this video. That kind of funk bass line wasn't too common in 80s music. John Taylor was a super talented bass player. The influence for Duran Duran's sound (synth and sax, funk bass) was 70s band Roxy Music (they were around in the 80s, but it's their early work that influenced DD).

Journey was my FIRST favorite rock band, but Duran Duran were INSANELY famous New Wave when they arrived and they soon were my next favorite. People called them the second British Invasion. I saw them live in Seattle, 1984. I was 14 years old and the crowds of mainly teenage girls went INSANE! John Taylor, the Bassist was my favorite. These guys REALLY put on a show. You would love Save a Prayer and I think you would like Fame. Love you as always!

I’m a total Duranie. I’ve seen them live, and own just about every record they made with the original lineup; as well as the records from their side bands ‘Arcadia’ and ‘The Power Station’. You guys should listen to the DD songs ‘Girls On Film’, ‘The Chauffeur’, ‘Planet Earth’, ‘Save A Prayer’, ‘New Moon On Monday’, and ‘Union Of The Snake’. They were such a great band.

Brad & Lex: When they released 'Rio' the album, their marketing agency advised a 'jet-setting' mystique surrounding five handsome Brits. And it worked! Their series of videos from that album practically created a whole new '2nd British Invasion' not seen since The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. ~ Jenn-X ☕

When you think about other top albums huge that year… Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Van Halen… you realize how different the Duran Duran “soundscape” really was (great observation Lex). I spent my hard-earned high school babysitting money on Thriller-EVERYONE did!-but Duran Duran was the concert I chose to pay for. Great show at the Oakland Coliseum. I wasn’t the only one lining up in the parking lot at 8am for the best seats… or who lost my voice for the few days after. 😂

Fun D2 facts. John Taylor & Nick Rhodes were art students, they came up with the idea of having a band that were artistic visually & so began their New Romantic music movement! Their videos broke new ground by not just showing a band play in a video, but be creative & tell a visually incredible story.

The reason that Hungry Like a Wolf might sound so commercial to you is because they 'Americanized' it at the time. Duran Duran was hitting tops of record charts all over the world but the U.S. and so they did some re-editing and mixing in the studio and released it as a single. They also made the video to appeal to the bosses at Mtv. (Mtv was like nope at first, but then it was one of the first videos that was exotic locale, etc.)
