Lyrics:
Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly
I turned on the lights, the TV, and the radio
Still I can't escape the ghost of you
What has happened to it all?
Crazy someone say
Where is the life that I recognize?
Gone away
But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Passion or coincidence once prompted you to say
"Pride will tear us both apart"
Well now prides gone out the window
Cross the rooftops, run away
Left me in the vacuum of my heart
What is happening to me?
Crazy someone say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
Gone away
But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Papers in the roadside tell of suffering and greed
Fear today, forgot tomorrow
Besides the news of holy war and holy need
Ours is just a little sorrowed talk
And I don't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Every world is my world
(I will learn to survive)
Any world is my world
(I will learn to survive)
Any world is my world

When we lose someone we love so much, or go through something that is so hard and a loss, this song tells us what to do. We must find the ordinary world and somehow relearn how to survive. What a gift.

Yes!!! Made me cry, but with those bittersweet tears of nostalgia and true love... Maybe it's just fondness of being young, but on the other hand - I've never felt lonelier than I do today, in my late forties, while I was shunned as a teen by practically everyone. But I had THOSE STUNNING DEEP THINGS, true gifts from MTV: great music and artful, insightful videos....

I found my poor sweet big brother dead in his bed on 7/30/20. That was the most devastating day of my life. I don’t remember the first few days after. But the Sunday after I put on my brave face and went to clean out his room and get it ready to be emptied. For some reason the moment I opened his door this song came into my head. I hadn’t thought about or heard it in literal years but there it was strong and clear every note and lyric. I burst into tears with the perfection of how exactly it captured what I’m going through. Thanks Duran Duran. My brother loved this song when we were teens. We both did.

Hello my friend I’m so sorry to hear of your loss, This song is actually about Simon Le Bon‘s friend David Mills who passed away in 1986, it is an absolute fantastic song,You are not on your own i to have lost a brother and a sister, sadly through suicide, they say time is a healer, but it’s not, Time accommodates,I am sending you my love and deepest warmest thoughts of sympathy to you stay strong and be brave 🌹🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

"Ordinary World" traces an emotional and philosophical journey that, through grief, reflects the struggle between clinging to the past and accepting a transformed reality. From psychoanalysis, it represents an attempt at integration and acceptance of loss; From philosophy, the song becomes an existential search for meaning and authenticity, despite absence and suffering. It is a narrative of both emotional reconciliation and rediscovery of oneself in a world that is perceived to be transformed. Brillant song! Pure art.

It's amazing how a man of a different nationality and from a different continent, with an entirely different lifestyle and life experiences and worldview and character can perfectly encapsulate how you've been feeling for months. Put in to words thoughts that you yourself couldn't. Felt like this was coming out of my own soul while I was listening to it.

When I first heard this song in 1993, I was 15 years old. Although it was my first time listening to it, at some inexplicable level it's as if I had heard it before a 1000 times. It spoke to me in a very deep personal way. As a confused lonely teenager I found comfort in the song and its lyrics. I felt like I didn't belong anywhere, and at the same time I didn't have anyone to share my feelings of alienation. I only had THIS song. The lyrics conveyed my feelings of sadness, fear and hope. I longed so much to find my Ordinary World. As the years went by, and my life continued through its twists and turns, I continued to come back to this song, for comfort, for peace, to grieve, to reminisce, to cherish. One of the things I discovered as I aged and matured was that the Ordinary World I yearned for so long as a teenager, was always here, within me. And thanks to this song, I found it. Thank you so much Duran Duran. This song is a gift. This song is priceless. This song is a masterpiece.

Duran Duran have so many great songs, though a lot of their lyrics are kinda cryptic, mysterious. This is the first song I ever heard from them where the lyrics are so direct, easy to understand and relate to, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. That’s why I think this is their best song. And the fact that their previous album stiffed and this seemingly came out of nowhere and was so unexpected makes this song all the more powerful.

This song is another level of music, by far their best. From it's message in the chorus'" I will learn to survive' to the mesmerizing guitar, to Simon Le Bon's perfect falsetto at the end. Simon said this song helped him to recover emotionally from the death of his friend David Miles. Amazing how powerful emotions can bring out greatness!

I agree. They were one of the best bands of the early to mid 80s. They were considered a bunch of pretty boys but they were also good musicians and songwriters. This was one of their more mature sounding songs but it's still very much them. To me the best pop music was late 70s to early 90s because that's the era I was listening to these as a child and right up until my early 20s so it resonates with me. There's a sadness to this song that is almost like me kissing goodbye to my youth back in 93 from one of my favourite bands of the era.

My wife of 22 years has spent the last month in intensive care battling a serious and life threatening illness! I’m lost without her, this song about loss, hope and the need to carry on resonates with me more than ever at this moment in time. I’m confident she will recover but for now the person I needed the most to get me through tough situations isn’t here and that’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with.

@@MrKeefelm I'm glad she's recovering, this disorder is not a walk in the park to put it lightly. Did she take the vaccine? There's actually a big increase in Guillain barre cases this year and it's associated with the COVID mRNA vaccines. In fact, there's an increase in all kinds of autoimmune disorders and other unrelated illnesses such as some types of cancer, blood clot related diseases, certain viral diseases and more, and they all seem to be associated with those vaccines.

@@prettyhatemachine8887 She has autoimmune problems already, under active Thyroid and a potential unconfirmed diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis. She is COVID vaccinated but that was months ago. A doctor has potentially put it down a reaction to the Flu vaccine which for some reason is pretty potent this year. My stance on vaccines hasn’t been altered by this, she’s just been very unlucky as this condition is still pretty rare. (Only around a 1000 people a year in the UK) No vaccine claims to be 100% risk free,. However I guess it would be naive to not take a more cautious approach in future.

The reason you refer to is called God, and - with the words of Jesus - he sent out the Holy Spirit as the Paraclete (Helper-Comforter-Advocate-Counsellor) to all of us, if we choose to see and accept. The Spirit is the inspirer of transcending works of art, and the words in this song include many, many words of deep religious significance. Don't know if Duran Duran ever even realised that, but it matters not. I love the Holy Spirit, who has been so very, very, very kind and merciful to me. I recommend that love and understanding and truth and true "seeing" to everybody...

@@pandorasullivan777 So glad what I wrote helps at least a bit, but also (these days) confident that nothing can help more than this way - there is no better source of help available to us! When I use my intellect, I DO see those questions that so many ask about "why God allows x,y or z to happen", and I don't really have an answer. But when I drop the brain a bit and think more with my heart and soul I realise that I have love and optimism and even joy in the face of bad and sad stuff around me. Maybe that sounds like a kind of "drug" I am taking to kill the pain but that is not so. My own health is fragile, yet I feel loved/loving and strong and connected and inspired. I write what comes to me and they are my words, but from beyond me as well. And it is not so hard to write nice and meaningful things with that kind of help! Likewise the worrying world events we see (pandemic and now a risk of war - the two have always gone together, after all) also go into the background in the face of a question like "what is the best and most satisfyingly Christian and Holy Spirit-pleasing thing I can be doing at this moment on Sunday, ignoring past or future, ignoring the bigger background and other pressing things?" And the simple and amazing and beautiful and right answer to that question is ... writing to Pandora Sullivan! So here I am, and what more do I really need? Again and again and again (I don't know why) God seems to operate through little miracles, and me writing with love to someone suffering I do not know and will never meet is one such. [Of course, it may be that the truly BIG miracle we have is the universe, our wonderful, magnificent and complex blue planet, and ourselves with our great civilisational and artistic achievements in it - but science has tried hard to push that miracle into the shadows, not always and not fully successfully though, I might say]. Anyway, may God have mercy on you and your mother. As for "lost daughter" syndrome, I ABOSLUTELY HAD THIS for quite a while (years in fact), but a few minutes ago - it being Sunday - I had a conversation that shows how progress HAS been made on that front, and it is spiritual in nature as it should and must be. So I end as I begin, saying that - in spite of everything - God is kind and the Holy Spirit is superbly INVENTIVE, including through Duran Duran. But I have another one for you, if you wish. It's from the Mormons (which I am far from being), but so what? It's amazing and I can never get through without tears, but that's OK too - try this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIHJo5ybotmGgac&start_radio=1 - most of what you or I can ever need is right there... If we are back from the Bible to art, you might also try the music from the divine and loving and comprehending film "Signs" which has a very amazing enlightening and transcending effect on many, many people. Don't be put off if it sounds scary at first as it is meant to be - but the music accompanies the characters' realisation that God is with them and things have meaning and the fight against evil can be won - and what happens to the characters also happens to us as we watch and listen, if we allow that to happen. This is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3eqfGWIe7qEgtU . Not surprising that the Holy Spirit works through this music and this movie too, given that it was designed to help people heal and feel hope after 9/11. Of course the Spirit wanted to be a part of that, even though He/It could not or did not stop the terrible and tragic events themselves. Do not know why, but have to accept that truth, as the Spirit is also the Spirit of Truth. Best!

We'd been together 27 years & 2 months when my husband left. The song was unknown to me until a few years after he'd gone and hearing it for the first time made me feel raw again. The words say so much. I wish you all the best in finding your 'ordinary world' and hope it turns out to be as extraordinary as mine did. Our memories and feelings take us here, there and everywhere and after seventeen years I can count all the blessings, including learning valuable lessons from what weren't such good things along the way. I hope you fare very well.

Couldn't agree more. I'd been a huge fan of DD, but after the Notorious album, they kinda lost it a bit for me; still flashes of great stuff ("Do You Believe In Shame" springs to mind) but I'd kinda given up on them, then a work colleague said one day when we were discussing music that he liked the new DD song in the charts - I had no idea there was one, of course it was OW, and I was blown away by it.
