Rick Steves' Europe

Күн бұрын

For nearly a thousand years, pilgrims have set their sights on Durham's great cathedral. Built around the year 1100 to house the bones of the great missionary monk, St. Cuthbert, this medieval church stands like a mighty fortress and offers perhaps England's best and purest look at Norman (Romanesque) architecture. #england #ricksteveseurope #durham

I adore Durham - so beautiful and so much to see and do throughout the year with many festivals etc. It is my faviourite UK city which is why I moved there! I was rightfully the first place/location in the UK to get UNESCO World Heritage Status.

I'm from Lincoln and, I have to admit, was a guide in the cathedral there for a while but I have to confess that Durham Cathedral is my favourite!

As always, Rick presents an informative and inspiring video. I will make the trek to Durham Cathedral from Phoenix, USA in 2022. This Cathedral is as good of a marriage between man and God as can get. The city of Durham looks charming and quiet. Exquisite.

I really enjoyed this video. Let's not forget: The Venerable Bede’s bones have been in Durham Cathedral since 1022. They were brought from Jarrow by a monk called Alfred who had them buried alongside Cuthbert’s relics, where they remained until they were moved to the Cathedral’s Galilee Chapel in the 14th century.

A few more interesting points. The people of Durham were known as the Haliwerfolk, which translates into the people of the saint. They rose up and massacred over 600 Normans including knights and a bishop as they were giving it large in our city and we were a little cheesed of with their bad behaviour. The cathedral replaced a wooden white church on the site and at one point it was used as a prison to house rowdy Scots captured in battle. They were a bit naughty and smashed some of the tombs inside which is why you see son=me battered figures within, they didnt however touch the magnificent clock as it had a thistle on it. Also the great dodgepot Henry 8th dissolved the monasteries and much treasure was taken, also the Neville Screen behind the altar originally had 109 figres on it that his lot banjoed. There also is a legend which folk of the era claim is true and a window seems to indicate with its depiction that during the war the Gerrys were using it as a marker and were going to bomb it but agreat mist came out of nowhere and shrouded the gaff. Worth a visit if your in the region folks.

Some of the arches and most of the vaults look like they're Gothic, not Romanesque. There are flying buttresses, but they are hidden under roofs. This is a fine example of the transitional style, proving that Gothic was a native Northern European invention and not an import from the East.
@YorkyOne
@YorkyOne 3 жыл бұрын
The roof was replaced in 1250 so you can see Gothic vaulting, plus other later works were carried out. But the vast majority of the cathedral is Norman. Not really transitional at all.

Always a cathedral. It was built to hold the body of St Cuthbert to keep it safe from the raiding Viking. The beautiful city was the build around the cathedral as it got hoards of pilgrims etc.

Actually, it was a Benedictine priory from the eleventh century until the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII in 1539. In 1541 the last Prior of the monastery became the first Dean and twelve of the monks were appointed the first Canons of the newly reconstituted cathedral. You can still see the monks' cloisters and the Monks' Dormitory (now a museum), along with other reminders of Durham's "prior" monastic heritage.

I have a family history and ties to Durham, England. I'm pretty sure I still have family there. I'm told my great, great uncles owned the brick yard and built a mid evil Castle and wood work. Maybe one day I will get to go there and find my family

I know, it doesn't seem like sitting on anyone's burial spot is good...especially when it's a piece of centuries-old stonework with artistic and historic value even if one isn't into religion.
