During his mirror training, an alpha male chimpanzee may have to prove his status to the group

Description English/French. 𝐑.𝐈.𝐏. 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬
IN ANIMALS AS IN HUMANS, SELF-RECOGNITION IN A MIRROR IS NOT INNATE.
It is the result of the more comfortable training in the mirror at home among young humans in the company of their parents who have done this training and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way.
Among chimpanzees, in the insecurity of the jungle, learning with his parents who have not done this and who do not speak, this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals.
Several years ago, during their first exposures to mirrors, each alpha chimpanzee actually recognized his neighbors among the reflections, he also noticed the presence of a stranger he had never met: his image that he did not know. In an attempt to frighten this stranger, this chimpanzee showed his large build, in standing in a bipedal position, stretching out his arms, ruffling his hair, screaming stridently and slapping the mirror.
In a quiet environment, often alone, each one of them is learning the mirror by quietly observing his image and begins to understand that it is himself in the mirror. But when he notices that members of the group are watching him and start to shout, he has to prove his status as a dominant male by hitting his image, which has become an intruder again!
Another alpha male can then try to calm his anger by engaging in pseudo-copulation and soothing grooming.
-------------

Your compliment is a great reward for my wife Anne-Marie, my friend Michel and me. As you may have noticed, we are not sitting comfortably in our armchairs, publishing, without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. A comment like yours cheers us up after my wife and I have spent days alone in the Gabonese forest for the maintenance of our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, changing memory cards, cells, batteries, cleaning lenses, removing fallen branches in their field of vision, walking up beds of creeks to find areas where animals are crossing over to install new traps etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. Then, back in the camp, we do the editing with for each video a description in English which is not our native language and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on... It's a choice. Thank you.

Dang those mirrors must be strong.. those chimps are not light weights.. I would have liked to see more.. it looked like he was figuring it out towards the end.. There interaction with the mirrors is so interesting to watch... Thanks again Xavier is there a place that I can go to see a longer version of these interactions? I do not believe we came from apes but they are a very smart creature and a lot like us in many respects there base behavior is possibly close to the first human base behavior and most definitely close to reaction people have today in maybe cases.. But just because I am a creationist doesn't mean I do not see the significance of chip behavior.. I truly appreciate you work and if I were a younger man would volunteer to work with you.. thanks again you and anne marie (I have a dawn marie) be safe and secure..you are a true french treasure to the world..

I saw a scene where white explorers meeting a Papuan tribe shot a polaroid photo of a man and a woman side by side: Both of them recognized the other and didn't want to admit to being the second person in the photo because each didn't know what he looked like, having never seen himself! In the following video kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXibaHuXnrRsj9U , an excerpt from the report of the French director Jean-Pierre Dutilleux on a first contact with the Toulambis tribe in Papua New Guinea shows adult dads who were afraid to see themselves in a mirror, but who after a few minutes understood the reflective properties of this object. Compared to the silverback gorilla alone facing his reflection in a very large mirror, avoiding direct eye contact with it, it was easier for these Papuans, endowed with speech, standing in the middle of their quiet tribe, in front of a very small mirror with a white one that shows its reflective property, to understand, their reflection through the comments of other tribe members. Thank you for watching more of my 160 home made videos posted on my channel and read the description attached to each one. @@XHB06400CANNES Yeah, I watched that Toulambi video before too but it's not conclusive as it doesn't show for example their reaction after they were eased into being shown the mirror. It also wasn't even the proper mirror test, they just showed them a mirror. The main problem with psychology is that you don't know what other people are thinking so it could be possible that he knew already that the person in the mirror was himself but just was awed by the technology of the mirror. Also that's just a video and not a scientific study.

Many KZbinrs are surprised that animals facing large mirrors do not recognize themselves and that they are even afraid of their image or see rivals when they are used to seeing their own reflections in ponds, standing waters, lakes and rivers when they drink from them. Several times while bending down in sunny weather over a pool of aquatic plants with a dark bottom, I saw, on the surface of the water, my shadow but not the reflection of my face, whereas I saw that of my wife placed 2 meters away from me. I believe that on the surface of the water, one's own image cannot be reflected perpendicularly but distinctly laterally. This is why animals could not learn from the mirror by drinking from lakes, ponds or rivers. From the commentary: "this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals. " This is just my thought... it is an interesting to consider that today, human's knowledge and skills advance largely due to the tiny % of brilliant humans - the Elon Musks of the race - and everyone else is getting a free ride from their insights. So that must have always been the case. Early and proto humans were not homogeneous, any more than we are today. 10,000 years ago, 50,000 years ago, there were always brilliant outstanding individuals whose personally abilities gave them insights beyond the technology of the day. No doubt this is true in these primates also. In one of these videos, there is an Einstein or Musk of gorillas or chimps. They must have existed, right?
