been in the sage cult going all the way back to the Mass days. will continue to support all things Durston. That said, I am firmly in the wrist strap camp. For me, a properly adjusted strap means my pole swings in my cadence with very little hand contact. Really cuts down on grip fatigue. The cradle around the wrist, for me, greatly assist with load disbursement on impact and thru the driving portion of pole contact and release with the surface. V2 with straps gets my money.

@@durstongear Andrew Skurka's point of view on straps and mud baskets is all you need to know to order these poles as they are, which I just did. Plus I believe that in case of a fall, being untethered is massively important. I will be adding rubber tips just so I can set up the X-Mid, since I don't want the poles to drive into the ground too much during high winds and distabelize the tent. I'll just have to find which rubber tips fit these poles. If I can't find any, i'll be keeping my hopes up that you sell rubber tips in the future. At any rate, you solved the key important problems with current trekking poles, thank you again Dan!

Much love from Hungary (bought 1st gen X-mid and X-mid pro)! Part of the handstrap family. Tried my poles without it ('cause Skurka said so), didn't like it. Appreciate you give that option (also like the low calorie QoL features like the pocket + lightstrap in the Dome. Waiting for the Dome 2). Will there be a cork grip version? Pretty please??? Where should I start a petition? It's a must for me. I have a Fizan, but the foam is mehhhhhh, so I returned to my heavier cork poles. Wouldn't mind paying triple for your quality version, if there would be a cork one. Will there be option to buy seperate piece/parts later?
@durstongear16 күн бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! We will have the strap version in a few days. Most of the cork poles on the market that are light are not real cork but just cork colored foam. We could do that, but real cord is about 3x the weight. It would add about 40g to the pole (e.g. 135g to 175g) so it is hard for us to do that since the focus is ultralight. It could happen someday, but right now the weight is just too high for cork. If you want cork, you could buy a cork grip from another brand (e.g. Diorite gear sells separate cork grips) that would fit onto the same 16 mm shaft. We do have the parts available separately.

I don't think I could use poles without a wrist strap. The majority of the downward pressure and stress on the hand is taken away with a strap. Obviously it would increase the weight to the same if not more than the others you tested but the overall user enjoyment and benefit would far 'outweigh' that extra weight

Regarding straps, I do think it is hard to fathom how light these poles are. When you try them, you'll see they are almost effortless to carry which leaves less need for a strap. My view is that straps are mostly a carryover element from other sports like Nordic skiing (where they are used for propulsion) and downhill skiing or running (where they are helpful so you don't drop a pole at high speed). These are instances where they are useful while hiking, but most backpackers are gripping the handle and not dominantly using the strap, even if they are wearing them. As the pole gets lighter, they get easier and easier to carry so there is less need for straps. That is why many backpackers don't use the straps and some ultralight poles omit the straps. Not having straps saves weight and also makes it easier to release the poles if you do get one stuck so it doesn't break. I recognize that some people like them and if people really want straps we can add them in a v2, but I do think it is hard to fathom how light these poles are and how that reduces the benefit of a strap.
@NoviceWildCamper6 ай бұрын
@durstongear I see what you're saying there but it's not so much the weight of the poles that you need the straps for but the downward pressure when hiking. This downward pressure takes the stress out of your knees going both up and down hills, fine if your walking on a flat but then I don't see the need for poles walking on a flat. Without the straps you are relying solely on grip strength to offset this pressure and even using a strap incorrectly, can cause strain on the hand and wrists. Personally I think you should at least offer the option for with ot without straps and that way it pleases both parties as no doubt some will be pro either model. Either way, the poles look good and the design is great. 👍

To start I own a standard x-mid and a kakwa 40 and I take them out almost every week. they are both my absolute favorite pieces of gear. Saying this I’m very particular with my trekking poles because I use them all the way through low class three terrain. I wish Mr Dan would make a model less focused on weight but rather functionality. I like the disconnecting idea but I’m not a huge fan of anything else. I like replaceable tips, cork handles, and the most important part to me is the straps. I actually have a video on my channel of how I use them. I feel like Dan has the kind of mind that could reimagine the trekking pole strap and make it more functional than ever. Although I like the creative ways used to save weight here like the glue and the coating. I’m all into that kind of stuff. I just don’t like reduced functionality. That’s why I think the X-mid the greatest piece of hiking gear ever. Tons of functionality and not overly focused on weight even though it’s still considered

Interesting, the design would make it possible to create a tripod by connecting the two lower parts with something like a voile strap and then sticking the 3 sticks in a 3D printed connector with the camera screw. Products like this exist but so far a solo trekker would obviously need to carry a third pole/stick. Not sure if there would be enough demand for you to create something, but I would love to see it. Ultralight tripods with a similar height weigh over 500 grams, this would easily be below that while you also get to have trekking poles. Or you could even get a full height tripod by using the trekking poles plus a Z Flick pole.

Great innovation Dan. What type of warranty do you offer ? The reason i ask is because with UK import duties they are a bit on the expensive side and my initial concerns would be long term durability because of the clip in lower section, i fear it would loosen over time. Also on some of the Leki pole handles you can unclip the hand loops and i was thinking that with their system you have added weight because of the mechanism that they use so maybe on yours you could drill a hole and thread a loop through it which then goes over the top and acting like a type of larks footing leaving enough room to get a gloved or mittened hand through an adjustable ultra lightweight material loop because i am in my 60s and i mostly use walking poles to aid my descents especially during wet and icy conditions, plus descending short wet grass which boosts my confidence because when i fall on my ass these days i feel the shock through my whole body . When i was younger it hardly registered if i fell but i am thinking from your point of view in terms of selling because older people rely on poles more than younger and some older people have a tough time bending down to pick up a dropped pole. If you need an old fart to do a review give me some discount and i am in 😜. If you didn't want to drill a hole which could potentially compromise the structural integrity you could opt for a small section of nearled rougher surface which would add friction for a suitable material to use as a lightweight hand loop I currently use the BD fly ultra that you are comparing here and i was very happy with them apart from the handles are too thin for my big hands and it took me a while to get used to them and now you have put me off by displaying the amount of flex compared to your new babies so thanks a lot 🤣

We didn't actually decide on a warranty period for these, but it would be like our tents where it is 2 years against defects. It wouldn't be warrantied against simply breaking the pole, but we'll have low cost replacement sections. The lower section uses mostly parts that have been used for several years in other Komperdell products, so they are well proven. We've made some changes to adapt them here, but the core mechanism is well refined. Cheers, Dan

@durstongear6 ай бұрын
They are intended as a 'backpacking' pole where you are normally going to be using them, or if you aren't then you can pack them away for a few hours on the side of your pack. It's not a like a running pole where you might pull them out and put them away every few minutes. So it is true they wouldn't work as well in a running pole type storage system. I would just slide them shorter and keep the tip connected, or if you are putting them away for a while then you can pop the tips off and maybe put them in the stuff sack if you want.

I wonder if the press button joiner will creak or flex & how it'll wear.. All in all the a classic Durston advancement in tech & materials used, well done Dan, It's fantastic that you are so actively pushing the industry further! ❤

Thanks! Yeah if you add straps here the weight is about the same but these are stronger and have external adjustment instead of twist lock. The lower joint had a lot of development so we expect it'll work well. We did quite a bit of work to avoid rattle/creaking.

These are amazing. I had to get ultimate direction fixed poles for the weight I want, and functional straps. The only wishes I have for these Durston poles is cork grips and wrist straps! I’d take a little weight penalty if you ever plan to make a variation, they will be perfect.

Was about to buy, but no strap is a deal breaker. The straps isn't here to prevent from loosing the pole, but it's here to push hard on the pole without gripping too tight. Look how trail runners use them
@durstongear6 ай бұрын
Trail running is quite a bit higher exertion, so straps have a larger role compared to walking where the forces are lower and many people find it comfortable to grab the grip without the aid of a strap. But we totally recognize this is just a preference and lots of people want straps. We aren't dogmatic about not having straps. You'll notice there is nothing in this video or our website that argues for not using straps. We are looking forward to expanding our pole lineup for the next batch (in the fall) where we will have a strap option.

A strap option is in the works for the next batch (fall 2024). Cork could happen at some point, but it's quite a bit heavier. Most lightweight poles with 'cork' are really just the same EVA foam that is dyed to look like cork. Real cork could happen but not in the next year.

Had a similar idea,or should i say question of whether the lower adjuster was really needed or not. So cool to se someone actually do it. What I'm a bit worried or skeptical about is that the lower part is not attached when stowing on a backpack and in general i would be worried about losing. It falling of of the backpack or something like that. Also, consider it's a magnet,would the poles disassemble if stuck for a moment while hiking, let's say in a tree root on an accident or some similar scenario,which is in general highly unlikely but still might happen. I guess that wouldn't be that bad and probably better than the whole pole being damaged.

The DCF stuff sack was constructed with left over material from our DCF floors from the Pro tents. So we have not increased the price of the poles to reflect this, since it was scrap material, so they are essentially a freebie. We do not have a way to purchase it without the sack.

Hey Dan, just recently I bought the X-Mid 1 Solid and I really like it a lot. My only fear is that i break my poles while on a multi-day hike and then have no tent. Currently I‘m using the flimsy Fizan Compact 3. Your new poles look quite a bit more sturdy, which I like! I know this might not fit your brand, but what do you think about a “solid” variant of the Iceline Poles which is even stronger (and maybe even with straps :D)? Apart from flimsiness, my other issue with the Compact 3’s is that the can get stuck, especially if they weren’t completely dry when I closed them. I suppose that is not an issue here since the Iceline’s are carbon?
@durstongear6 ай бұрын
Yeah the Fizan's will corrode a bit and get hard to open if you store them wet. If you break them, usually you can still assemble something. If not, you can find a stick or borrow a pole. A 'solid' version of these poles could happen but not in the next year. We'll listen to feedback and if it seems like there's enough interest we may do it, but everything takes a while.

Great to see innovation is still happening 🎉 that being said, I don’t see a use for a trekking pole without straps as it’s very inefficient. Personal preference can be debated but not psychics :)
@durstongear6 ай бұрын
Psychics are pretty debatable too, but physics are tougher to argue with :) Straps on poles is a big debate, as certainly they can be useful but also there are arguments that with the lower propulsion forces while hiking (vs nordic skiing) they are less needed, and some people like myself prefer no straps for other reasons (e.g. no chafing, easier to release if they get snagged). However, we recognize people have different preferences and we will be adding a strap version for the next batch (late 2024).

Love Cork (fake-cork is even better), hate straps. Straps are for those who like broken poles - then they complain endlessly about carbon-pole fragility. GG used to sell fake-cork handles, but not anymore. Is there any chance you'll sell cork handle replacements?
@durstongear6 ай бұрын
The fake cork handles are usually just EVA foam that is styled to look like cork, which is the same foam we're using here. For example, both our handles and GG's handles are actually EVA foam. I don't plan to add a true cork version but we could style the EVA foam to look more like cork, as they do.
@tomnoyb83016 ай бұрын
@@durstongear - Having used many, they are not the same. EVA comes in many densities, weights and absorption specs. Black-EVA handles are more of a foam on every handle (in stores) and has more sponginess than GG-style fake-cork. Black-EVA therefore rubs off the handle and onto hands way more than fake-cork. But maybe you've discovered the exception? Black-EVA absorbs more water/sweat than fake-cork. Black also absorbs way more sun than fake-cork. Black cars are as much as 40° hotter than white cars simply due to color. That almost certainly translates into more EVA-degrading UV absorption. There's also Black-rubber, which absorbs no water and immediately becomes slick/slippery when wet and that material is also unsuitable for handles. Fake-cork (EVA-cork) is better than real cork, since real-cork tends to eventually become brittle from salt/sweat.

I am probably misunderstanding… but wouldn’t a pole that flexes more under stress actually be less likely to shatter/break? In my mind, it would make sense that a material that’s more flexible and bendable is less likely to shatter under pressure then a more rigid material, right?

We did a break test for the Iceline compared to other poles near this weight (but a little heavier actually) and the Iceline had favourable results. Our website has a photo of the pole holding 40 pounds whereas comparable poles that we tested broke below that. We do not feel it is necessary to post the specific results, as we think there are a lot of great products on the market that are awesome at their intended use, and the breaking point is only one facet.
