Duskmourn's Monsters | Reviewing the Flavour - Part 1

Duskmourn's previews have finished! To follow up being semi-pessimistic in my anticipation of Duskmourn last video and because I can't stop thinking about the plane, I want to review all of its cards for their flavour! What better way to know the plane of Duskmourn than by judging the flavour of its cards! Against the lore we already have and my own fickle opinions. There's loads to love and a few things to not love so much about this impossible mansion/80's tropes horror mashup world.
There's a lot of cards to look at, so I'll split this up into themed chunks and release them over the coming days as they're done. In this first part I want to begin with something positive so let's take a look at the monsters in this demonically corridor-ed world and the big mothman himself, Valgavoth.

I feel it makes perfect sense for the spirits' clothing to be all over the place era wise. Unlike most magic sets, duskmorne has a very similar historical structure to our own, perhaps coming closest out of all magic sets to the modern age. That means that there is a massive amount of history before the house, all with their own clothing styles and aesthetics. The ghosts of Duskmorne are every single person that ever died before the house took over, so they necessarily should have a wide variety of clothing styles. Since the glitch effect is a strong enough indicator that something is a ghost all on its own, the only real important thing about their clothing is that it looks old, whether that means it looks victorian or industrial or anything coherent is unimportant and would probably make people start asking why billions of ghosts across thousands of years of history are all wearing the same kind of jacket.

Someone on reddit said that fear of failed tests makes you want to study more, ergo it makes you draw more cards to find more answers Also Fernando Falcone really is reminsicent of the old magic the gathering art, so much so that Fear of Infinity works perfectly in the old-border (I tested it, it does) Duskmourn is also one of the best sets for new MTG artists I think I've ever seen I didn't notice that Friendly Teddy had claws in the foreground somehow

In the nightmare monsters, the fear monsters, the "spirit heads" are the souls of the survivors the creatures caught. I don't know where I read it, but I think that's the meaning. Also for Fear of Missing Out, It works really well because it's a big bunch of hands grasping in every direction, trying to "not miss anything".

Fear of Being Hunted should have been heavy looking, maybe some hardware on it like cattle bells that would make noise when it ran. I feel a big bulky monster that shouldn't be able to run quickly is alot scarier when it actually does run quickly than a skinny animal thing that already looks like it could run quickly.

I consider the anachronisms to be a view of people freshly captured way back when. It's not much, but it's better than being completely lacking like with Thunder Junction.

@@christopherb501 yes, but 1. There is no Shadowmoor anymore, the two sides of the plane have merged. It's just Lorwyn. 2. They don't do blocks anymore so the set is pretty much just going to be called Lorwyn, or I may be wrong and theyll do a double set on the plane like Midnight Hunt/Crimson Vow with the story explaining why they unmerged

The Glitch Ghosts rendered in gold are considered kinda and helpful spirits by the denizens (And they prove it by helping survivors)

I think Fear of Being Hunted is flavour fail considering "Can't be blocked by more than one creature." not only would better represent the idea, but it's also - at least according to MTG wiki - refered to as stalking by RnD.

I feel like the problem is that they don't use the incredible creature designs nearly as much as they could, and indeed, should have I LOVE the Glitch Ghosts, and there are only TEN (10) Glitch Ghosts That's my main problem with the set as a whole, they have too many cool, awesome monster and villain organization designs that it's night impossible to use them all like there's only FIVE WICKERFOLK and they got a full couple of paragraphs about them If they cut the survivors down to like...30 I think they could make more than enough room for more cultists, ghosts, razorkin, wickerfolk and cellarspawn if they wanted to. Like, despite the Cult being a White-Black group, there's only like...3 white arts involving it I have more thoughts on the survivors that I will save for the next video

I wonder why they went "Fear of" for all the Nightmare creatures instead of naming them after a phobia or syndrome? Instead of Fear of Imposters why not use "Imposter Syndrome" Maybe they didn't want to make light of real things people struggle with? But at the same time, it doesn't matter if you name something "Fear of Lost Teeth" your going to trigger someone Dentophobia regardless.

I have two guesses. One would be that some of the phobia names were already taken. The other is that in design it could be hard to remember which name is what fear when making the cards.

i am fully brainroted by the magnus archive so i have to say mothing about the fear, there are 15 of them if it's probably a coincidence but by the alpaca high above does it make me happy so now i will say something that will spoil the magnus archive very hard if you plan on listening to it maybe don't read what's under that imma try to associate each fear of card with a Fear from TMA abduction- the crawling rot (didn't really know where to place this one) being hunted - the hunt burning alive - the desolation exposure - The Slaughter failed tests - the spiral falling - the vast immobility - the buried impostors - the stranger infinity - The end isolation - the lonely lost teeth - the flesh (my beloved) missing out - The extinction sleep paralysis - the web surveillance - the eye the dark -The dark

@13:27 That's just Night's Reach.. In fact, even the Overlords and most other creatures remind me of several Kami designs from the OG Kamigawa. Specially Floodpits with the floating elements. This set just makes me sad that the updated Kamigawa went the way it did..

I think Valgavoths absorb opponents cards and play them with life fits the flavor of the house consuming and using all incredibly well. Incredibly annoying to play against though, especially when cheated out.

Not to sound rude, but there is an explanation of the Ghostly Keybearer having been a human who simply dealt with the house in life without breaking the story’s lore.

The Japanese alt-art versions of most of the creatures are soooooo good. I've been thinking recently about how, compared to Japanese TCG's, Magic is really hit or miss with the way its art depicts big creatures or creatures that are supposed to be really impactful. You see, many Japanese TCG's present their especially big or bombastic creatures really close up, usually full art and taking up basically the entirety of the card so that all the detail on the creature itself, as well as the pose are super impactful. What Magic usually does is, it's trying to depict the entirety of the creature as well as its environment. This makes it so that even supposedly huge and bombastic creatures usually exist as a small(ish) figure in the middle of a composition with lots of detail in the background and surroundings. That, and the general reservedness of their full art treatment makes these creatures definitely not feel as big as they're supposed to be. A lot of the impact is lost as well. I think Magic would benefit a lot from implementing the Japanese way of presenting important and especially big creatures front and center and as big and detailed as possible on the card, rather than making them a part of a larger composition in an already small window on the regular card frame.

Why is Marvin, Murderous Mimic worded so convoluted? It's a legendary. There can't be other creatures with the same name. Even if you find a way to copy it, it neither has activated abilites to copy nor would it matter because it would already have them.

Unsure if anyone answered your question about fear of burning alive it deals damage equal to the object that triggered it. So bolt does 3 fear does 3. The card has an intervening If clause think bridge from below or fatal push. When x happens and if A is true then do Y.
