Hi Curtis and Sonia. The nursery used to be an aviary. I remember as kids we used to visit the Gardens quite often. The one cage had canaries in, and the other one housed budgies and parrots. Thanks for the video. It reminded me of my childhood 😊

So beautiful! One forgets New York City began in the same fashion as Cape Town - as a Dutch town called "New Amsterdam" with a fort called "Fort Amsterdam". When the English took over, they changed the name to "New York". Luckily more of Cape Town's history survives to tell the story!

Have not been here in a very long time but really surprise to see in what good state the gardens is in. I remember sitting on the bench and feeding the squirrels peanuts.

Just absolutely spectacular. I can say no more. Cape Town is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the world with an abundance of history thrown in. This is what one would refer to as a world-class African city 🤗. So proud to be a South African! 😏

I used to take my kids to the gardens/museum at least once a month back in the 1980/90's. My youngest daughter was fascinated by the "rabbits in a tree" (squirrels) 😅.

Hi guys another awesome video right up my alley from the slave house to the children in native dress dancing loved all the history and my Jan Smuts connection the statue near the Parliament reminds me of the statue in particular square in London right next to the one of Churchill. The garden could be in London. but you see table Mountain in the background mind blowing lovely to listen to your memories of the garden and as always the banter and laughter. Great it's well used by both locals and tourists. Very enjoyable stroll the history of Cape Town. Thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

The Dutch called Indonesia, " India" in the old days, so I think the "Indian" slaves came from the Dutch "India" - i.e. the place called "Indonesia" after 1947 or so (" The Indian Islands" - just like Polynesia is The Many Islands). Another word that has changed meanings over the year is "garden" (especially when you talk about Ancient Mesopotamia). The early meaning is closer to what we'd call a "market garden" today (so we still keep the old word in some sayings). There's a fair chance that the Company Garden started out as a veggie patch, rather than a flower bed, in other words. And right after I say that, you hit the VOC vegetable garden... Anyway, its life as a modern garden matters much more. Yes, so nice to see all the people walking there, or sitting down to think, and unwind, maybe. So full of life. Yes, I agree, it warms the heart to see it.

Many happy memories for me. Back in the 80s I was studying at UCT. I would take the bus into town and get off there at the top of Government Avenue at the Mount Nelson. I would walk down through the beautiful trees. In spring the oaks would be so gorgeous in new fresh green . I loved to visit the tea garden and walk through the garden. Then down Adderley Street to visit Stuttafords and Garlicks on the way to the train station to travel out to Bellville. Those ancient trees are so amazing. The squirrels are cute but people have to be careful, they do bite. I do hope you are going to visit Kirstenbosch. The Mount Nelson, or Nellie, was my wedding night venue. Amazing place and also full of history. Talking of history, I so love the history lesson provided. I really appreciate that you research everything and supply the info❤❤

It was the South African Heavy Artillery and there are similar memorials in other cities. Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Kimberley. Six Guns were brought back from Europe.

Thank you so much for taking us through the Company Gardens. So much history there. I remember when I was a klein outjie about 6 years old, back in the 1960's ,I grabbed one of those squirrels by the tail🐹. So good to see that their offspring are still thriving in the gardens today. A lovely trip down memory lane. What a shame that Curtis did not get a nice cold Lager to wash down that delicious looking sandwich.🍺🥪🍰☕ Did Sonia manage to spot any lemon trees in the garden ?🍋🍋 I am sure they grew them to prevent scurvy for the sailors. Wonderful that Sonia was able to walk around even though some of the paths were treacherous. Next stop Tigerberg Zoo ? Ek onthou nog die chimps tea party there.
@DustBugsTravelАй бұрын
I don't remember if we saw lemon trees that day, but Sonia would never have picked any lemons there, no matter how much she loves them. 😊🍋 Tygerberg Zoo closed down permanently in 2012 already and we never visited.
