Well, I couldn't wait for this one, and got the Sigma a few months ago. I am enjoying it far more than I did the Canon, that's for sure. It looks like the Sigma might be a bit more compact, which for hiking is a very good thing. Regardless, sure glad we have these options opening up for us. It was so frustrating to have such a great camera in the R7, and then attach a goofy, low-performance lens.

Completely agree.

Great review! Definitely sounds like the best choice for an APS-C lense at this focal range for RF-S. Can't wait for Tamron to bring the 17-70 F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD to the RF mount.
@DustinAbbottTWI11 күн бұрын
I do think the 17-70 will be popular. Just such a useful zoom range with a constant F2.8 aperture.

I’ve recently bought back into the Canon system so this is great news.

I think the video is fantastic because of its quality and also because as a user of the RF system I will now be able to have a very good UGA. I saw the optical quality of the sigma RF 10-18 in C. Frost's resolution tables and I was very disappointed with that lens. Even the proposed Canon RF-S 10-18 was sharper than I thought but lacked brightness. In this way I think this Tamron will be my choice for the Canon R10 that I have. Thank you so much. Greetings from Chile.

I was surprised that the Sigma didn't show better in my review, either, as I liked it on other platforms.

Thanks for review, good to see RF mount especially much neglected APS-C format getting some much needed quality 3rd party AF lens support.

Hi Dustin, I have a Canon R7 and I take wildlife photos with the RF100-500 but I was looking for a light, high-performance, travel-friendly wide-angle lens. This Tamron seems like an excellent choice to me. Thank you so much. Greatings from Rome

Good to see more APS-C lenses on Canon. Other than size, lens selection (and price of quality telephoto glass) was the biggest reason I went with a Sony a6700 over a Canon R7. I think it's unlikely they'll ever allow 3rd party full frame RF lenses (although I'll be delighted to be wrong). I'm sure the only reason they're allowing these RF-S f2.8 zooms and the handful of primes (so far) is that they have no interest in making those lenses themselves, but they've realized that fewer people will buy their APS-C cameras if all those people can get is crummy kit lenses, save for the birders who buy the R7 to use with the L telephoto lenses they already own.
@DustinAbbottTWI27 күн бұрын
I think the latter part of your observations are 100% correct, and I certainly hope that you're wrong about third party full frame lenses, as I think eventually that will kill the brand.
@planterz4227 күн бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI Yeah, obviously all camera manufacturers want people to buy their lenses as well, but with Sony's open mount and Nikon allowing some (more than Canon, anyway), it seems like it'd behoove them to open their full frame RF as well. In my case, choosing between the a6700 and the R7 for plane spotting the choice came down to the fact that I can get the 70-350mm (which I did) or the Tamron 50-400mm, but with the R7 it was either the unsealed and dark 100-400mm f5.6-8 or the 100-500mm L for $2600. Wasn't a hard decision for me. But if that Tamron 50-400mm was available for RF, Canon could have gotten my money and brand loyalty. Instead Sony does.
@frankfeng270126 күн бұрын
Lens selection aside, the only reason I would get R7 over a6700 is for wildlife and sports, or if need it as a back-up body. For most people, a6700 is a better camera.

Tamron's 17-70 would be a game changer for Canon APS-C RF. Will allow enthusiasts to get most out of the cheaper APS-C bodies.
@DustinAbbottTWI26 күн бұрын
I suspect that lens will come.

Yes, a native APS-C f/2.8 standard zoom lens with VC would be perfect for the R10.

I have an R6 Mark II and it's not recognizing the new Tamron 11-20 rf mount lens. Do you know how I can fix it? Both the camera and lens are up to date.
@DustinAbbottTWI17 күн бұрын
Hmmm, that's odd. I would reach out to Tamron. If it isn't firmware, then it may actually be something defective in the lens itself. It should be fully compatible.

What makes the vignetting different on different mounts if the lens's optics are the same?
@DustinAbbottTWI26 күн бұрын
The mount diameters change, and I suspect that is the biggest reason.;

Canon needs to change its APSC kit lens at RF-s18-45mm F4.5-6.3 neither Vlog friendly nor bright for night video.
@DustinAbbottTWI23 күн бұрын
I suspect that Canon allowing these Tamron and Sigma lenses in is an admission that they probably aren't going to invest much in improving lenses like that.

I have Sigma RF 10-18mm 2.8 ... it crops indeed automatically to 1.6 aps-c like RF-S does. HOWEVER... on R5C it does NOT crop 1.6 in movie mode. Only in Photo mode. So I can shoot 10-18 video in fullframe, with not much vignetting, or none depending on IS settings. You can shoot 8K video at 10mm and save videostills. .... and btw for fun there's an easy hack to bypass the forced 1.6 crop in photo mode and on other models, with restrictions 😉

Does this Tamron 11-20 fit my canon EOS R?
@DustinAbbottTWI6 күн бұрын
Yes and no. It will mount on your camera and use it, but you can only use it in APS-C mode, which will only give you 11.6MP of resolution.

very unlikely to have third party FF lense on Canon RF. Sony hasn't made any APS-C lens for 2½ years so it's evident its all about profit. which is fine. camera makers want to protect their investments, buying new bodies every year is unsustainable. i wouldn't be surprised if Sony start to lock down tidied their lens mount retrospectively due to declining sales as their lens are also 2-3x overpriced compared to this party offerings.
@DustinAbbottTWI23 күн бұрын
I doubt that regarding Sony. Sony has massively grown their market share in the mirrorless era due to their policy.

Lens selection aside, the 1.6x crop and the ugly look is why I won't buy into RF-S.
