This widely acclaimed version of "I Don't Want To Go On WIthout You" by the legendary Dusty Springfield with Madeline Bell, Lesley Duncan & Barbara Moore, on backing vocals, was aired on Dusty's eponymous BBC show "Dusty" on Thursday the 8th September 1966. What a beautiful and serene musical and vocal interpretation of this great tear-jerker of a song. Its abilility to immediately evoke and take you back to a time where you do not want to go emotionally, never ceases to amaze me. Written by the great songwriter Bert Berns [Betrand Russell Berns] and arranged and produced by the legendary, Jerry Wexler, at Atlantic records. It was covered by a host of stars including "The Drifters" with "Charlie Thomas" leading the vocals, and Merseyside's regionally voted most popular band of 1963 "The Escorts"[although I find such hard to believe, given the then occurring meteroic rise of "The Beatles"], fellow Merseysiders "The Searchers", "The Moody Blues", "Nazareth", "Patti LaBelle & The Bluebells" and "Van "The Man" Morrison" [all equally worthy of a listen]. Incidentally, earlier on Thursday the 8th September 1966 HM Queen Elizabeth the II had formally and officially opened the then new Severn Bridge river crossing. So it was all going on that day, hey...

She was her friend but Dusty apparently was Romantically involved with Norma Tanega from 1966 until 1970. It could well have been prior to this performance on her own show or later that year when Dusty had started being in a romantic relationship with Norma Tanega. Sadly Norma Tanega apparently passed early this year in January 😥
