I think women’s voices probably evolved to soothe their babies and young children with gentle tones and Dusty’s heavenly voice has to be the utmost example. There are a few that are close, but none surpass her excellence of tone.

All I can add to what's been said of Dusty's career, is that I was amazed at her comeback in the late 80's when Pet Shop Boys (the brit synth-pop duo) featured her in their '87 hit "WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS?" it hit #2 on US and UK charts, her highest rating ever in the US (even surpassed Son Of A Preacher). It's worth a listen, and check out the official video online, Chod!

When I in high school(Australia) in the 60's, we would listen to Dusty songs on my little transistor radio and be swept away by her music and voice and the lyrics etc. Little did we know back then that she was gay and yet singing about men and love affairs etc. So sad that she had to live a life in the closet. R.I.P. Dusty xxxx Wishin' and Hopin' was our fav song.

Her live version of this (I don't know if there is anything) was incredible. We saw many of these great artists on television concerts and variety shows like Ed Sullivan's, Dean Martin's and Jonny Carson's. Petula Clarke, Ella Fitzgerald, and the list goes on. The song writers like Burt Bacharach, Rogers and Hammerstein & Cole Porter gave them some amazing things to sing. Enjoy!

Many Dusty fans are unaware that she was a massive star with the Springfields prior to going solo. In the UK she had her own TV shows, many hits through the 60s, and was right up there with the Beatles as pop royalty. Somewhat ironically, the commercial failure of her 'Dusty in Memphis' album - which contained mega-hit 'Son of a Preacher Man' sent her career and personal life of the rails. She was, as the likes of Tom Jones, Elvis Costello, Elton John and so many others have stated, surely the finest pop singer ever from the UK. BTW, if you recall Elton and Kiki Dee doing 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart', and Ms. Dee's 'I've Got the Music in Me': she was one of Dusty's backing singers along with Madelline Bell and Sandy Duncan. Kiki is on the far right in this clip. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpm6inqQZcmEfrc

One of my favorite songs from Dusty is Come Back To Me, partly because of the band (!!). My dad was a professional drummer and band leader in the 40s and 50s, and he would've said that this band was "really cookin'!!" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/opKtkHqDhNSroLc). To be very honest Chod, Dusty and Lulu started it off with these Jazzy Soulful vocals in the 60's and were huge ...... I mean successes!!!! They were all over the radio and TV variety shows singing their songs but they had vices like smoking, drinking, drugs like Janis Joplin and Jimmy Hendrix that led them to their end and it is sad......however, I agree with you. Let's major on what these extraordinary talents left us to experience. Check out Dusty's "Windmills of Your Mind."
