This is one of the great British female singers from the 60's. She had such a beautiful unique voice & covered many genres (blue-eyed soul, pop ,ballads, country, jazz). She had a lot of hits such as "I Only Want to Be with You", "I'll Try Anything", "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", "Wishin' & Hopin' ", "The Look of Love", "The Windmills of Your Mind" & many more.

Just a little blue eyed soul! Whitney Houston's mom was in those background vocals. "The backup vocals were by a female group called the Sweet Inspirations, who were made up of Cissy Houston, Sylvia Shemwell, Myrna Smith and Estelle Brown. They were the sought-after female backup vocalists in the New York area, having performed on albums by Aretha Franklin, Wilson Picket, Van Morrison and many others. With four singers, they could create a rich, soulful sound that suited this song perfectly."

The backing vocals are superb, as you quite rightly point out. This era launched a whole new style of BVs, although it was a decade or so later before the artists that had got hooked on them in their youth started to utilise them fully. To see what I’m talking about, do yourself a favour and watch the movie/documentary 20 Feet From Stardom. It’s a fascinating look at the gospel origins of some of the most famous backing vocalists of all time, and how some of their ranks managed to cross the 20 feet of stage from BVs to front of stage as artists, and how some of them couldn’t make it that far. Fantastic movie.

As I understand, vocal backup on some of the Dusty in Memphis album was performed by The Sweet Inspirations. They were started by Cissy Houston and 4 other singers. They also backed Jimi Hendrix on "Burning of the Midnight Lamp". Cissy is the aunt of Dionne Warwick, cousin of renowned opera soprano Leontyne Price, and Whtney Houston's mother! Serious vocal chops in that family!

The Memphis Boys backed Dusty on this album (recorded at Memphis’ American Sound Studios) with Tommy Cogbill on bass. Another song from this album that you’d like would be “Breakfast in Bed.” This album was a bit of a side trip for Dusty. She had a great soulful voice but she was primarily more of a pop singer. LOL - loved your reaction. Mine was similar. I am old enough to remember when Dusty was popular on the AM radio. I was too busy being enthralled by the Beatles, Animals, Herman's Hermits and (God help me) the Monkees (Davey Jones' face was all over my walls) to pay any attention to the more mature sounds of Dusty Springfield. With her Blond bouffant hair and easy listening sound (I thought), I felt she was the antithesis of cool. In fact, I almost skipped this video based on those memories. WOW - was I wrong. Thank God My taste has matured substantially. Now I think she is totally cool, and cringe at the thought of my Monkee crush! Thank you Chod, and thank you whoever recommended her. I am now going to listen to some more...

During her 1960s peak, she ranked among the most successful British female performers on both sides of the Atlantic. Her image - marked by a peroxide blonde bouffant/beehive hairstyle, heavy makeup (thick black eyeliner and eye shadow) and evening gowns, as well as stylised, gestural performances - made her an icon of the Swinging Sixties. Born in West Hampstead in London into a family that enjoyed music, Springfield learned to sing at home. In 1958, she joined her first professional group, The Lana Sisters. Two years later, with her brother Tom Springfield and Tim Feild, Springfield formed the folk-pop vocal trio The Springfields.

One of my favorite Dusty Springfield performances is hosting a March, 1965, British television show called ‘ Ready - Steady- Go’ featuring the Sounds of Motown. The Motown artists brought to England for the show include: Temps; Supremes; S.Wonder; Miracles; M.Gaye; M & Vandellas; Earl V. Dyke. It’s mind boggling the amount of talent on this show. I think it should be required viewing for anyone who’s interested in music.

This song was orginally written with Aretha in mind who turned it down then Dusty got it and recorded it. Later when the song became a hit Aretha did record it herself but this is the version. Nowadays it's concidered a soul classic. The album this song appears on is called "Dusty in Memphis" which isn't really true. They did some vocal sessions in Memphis but everything else was done at Atlantic Records Studios New York City.

The shocking thing about these musicians is when you learn that these guys made most of this stuff up as they were recording it. In other words they would come into the studio with a bare minimum amount of stuff actually written down, and would often add the bass and the horn parts on the day it was being recorded, meaning that the bass players were writing the bass parts and the horn players were writing the horn parts, and the drummers were figuring out when to come in and when to do solos and when to lay back. They Made Magic. That's Just How Good These Guys Were and not all of them had formal music training. And the other geniuses that did a lot of these old Sixties records were at the Muscle Shoals studios in Alabama.

Finally! I've been leaving requests all over the internet for the shamefully neglected Dusty Springfield. I'm glad to see some reactors have wakened up to her in the last few months but still not enough. Her name should be shouted from the rooftops. If you like Dusty you should look into Julie Driscoll. She is the link in the chain from Dusty to Annie Lennox both chronologically and stylistically. Check out her work with Brian Auger and the Trinity. But please Stay Awhile with Dusty first. And that is the title of one of her songs you could feature. For more of the sultry Dusty you heard here that is not on the Dusty in Memphis album, all of which is some of her best work, she does a great cover of Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey - sensuality to the max. Oh hell, there isn't any such thing as a bad Dusty Springfield track. Btw. I like what you play in your intro. Could we hear you (I mean you personally) playing some more of that? Jazz of all kinds is my jam but jazz/hip hop is such a groove. Buckshot Le Fonque is a Branford Marsalis (saxophonist brother of trumpeter Wynton) foray into that genre. Well, that's about it for my little wish list ... for now.
