This song has been recorded by so many people. It was originally an instrumental version in 1967. Lyrics were added later & it became a big hit for the Classics IV in 1968. Dusty Springfield also recorded it in 1970.

Oh man, now you're getting to the heart of Dusty! It's such a great cover. She is such a great jazz singer. Not flashy but sultry. She combined older arrangements with newer sounds. Chod, you are in a nice Dusty run! Thanks for posting.

I'm loving that you have just discovered Dusty, and that you are loving her so much. I was a friend & colleague of Dusty's. I've noticed that everything you've played is from late 60s/early 70s. I'm wondering how you'd feel about the more full voiced Dusty from earlier recordings - Won't Be Long, Long After Tonight Is All Over, You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, What's It Gonna Be? So glad you've found her.

"Let's Get Together Soon" ", "No Stranger Am I", "The Corrupt Ones" are among my favorites. Hardly anyone mentions those. That just shows you how deep her catalog is.

Classics IV had the original in 1968. Dusty's cover was shortly after I believe. Then The Atlanta Rhythm Section's in 1979.

A good one to listen to is "Nothing Has Been Proved," which was one of her very last recordings (1989). Her voice hadn't suffered at all through all those years.

Jazzy, elegant, classic..you said it just right. Hoping you do "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" next. So gorgeous. And her biggest radio hit "Wishin' & Hopin'". And I noticed that album is titled "How Can I Be Sure"..that's a great song too..old school classic. Lots of people covered that one. Dusty is, quite simply, magical.💙☮💙

I would definitely recommend a few other female singers for you to listen too. Shirley Bassey - her power and beauty are unsurpassed. Big Mama Thornton - one of the people who made Rock N Roll possible. Sister Rosetta Tharpe - the mother of Rock N Roll. Cleo Lane - Jazz Scat royalty. Maria Callas - breathtakingly beautiful operatic soprano voice (and that's an understatement). Beth Neilson Chapman - storytelling genius. Allison Krauss - pure bluegrass brilliance. Édith Piaf - heartbreak in every note. Ofcourse there are many more singer's that deserve attention but for me these are a great starting point.

Dusty certainly does this song justice, but I'm really confused by the lyrics. In the Classic IV version, the girl is seen to be spooky throughout, from the beginning when she changes her mind about going to a movie, to the end. But in this version Dusty says he calls her and she's the one who changes her mind, so clearly she's the spooky one here. But through the rest of the song she calls him spooky. It doesn't make sense to me. Did anyone else notice this? I'd really like to know I'm not crazy...

Yes. It's not a memorable performance and the lyrics are twisted so much as to make little sense. No idea why this was suggested and selected ahead of her best songs.

Hey Chod, I know you've listened to Stevie Ray Vaughan. But I wonder if your Interested in listening to Stevie Ray's hero and mentor. "Albert King - Blues Power - 9/23/1970 - Fillmore East (Official)" Albert King was a Mississippi Bluesman who created a unique String-Bending Guitar style that influenced Three generations of musicians. Hope you give this a listen and I look forward to hearing what you think. Thanks and Take Care~

I'm an appreciator of studio-versions, too. The studio version (ideally) represents the artist's vision, and is crafted to that standard. Live versions can capture moments of spontaneous creativity that can elevate them to iconic level, but those live performances are a different animal. Both live and studio can be enjoyed immensely, but the studio version to me is the starting point - the fundamental frame of reference.
