Hard to say which one to do. I went with a flood table with air stones lights on floods for a few hours then drains. Then floods then off for the night. I found wicking beds better though. Just tube to the bottom add water it wicks up just add more.

I grew tomatoes last year dutch bucket style, very similar to mhpgardner with perlite drippers running twice a day for 10-15 minutes draining back into a reservoir. This year I have made a gutter grow type system out of vinyl downspouts, similar to how the guy on the Keep on Growin channel makes for kratky lettuce. He forms the ends of the downspouts with a heatgun and I cut 3 in holes for netcups and a 3in hole in the bottom of buckets. I then make a 60/40 perlite/vermiculite mix as my grow medium and use a heavy duty ground cover cut in a small section to separate the net cup that is submerged in the downspout to keep the perlite/vermiculite mix out of the nutrients. The perlite/vermiculite mix seems to be a great ratio for auto wicking up what it needs. The tomatoes right now are about 4 feet tall and vines are slightly thicker than last year, and I believe to be doing better than last years dutch buckets. The benefit of this obviously is no electricity as I have a 275 gal tote that gravity feeds the downspouts with float valves. I have successfully grown carrots, turnips, and various leafy greens and cabbages. To me it seems as if the tomatoes should do better in the circulating dutch bucket system, as the gutter system seems as if oxygen at the roots would be lower or the same. I'll know more once the season is over. The grow media is also awesome for propagating suckers or basil cuttings in. It seems to retain a perfect moisture level. The only downside I have seen or foresee possibly is that there sometimes is algae growth on the top, and it may have more overall evaporation than circulating systems, but both potential issues could be fixed by adding a layer of hydroton on top. You should attempt to use the the 60/40 ratio grow medium to do some gutter/wick system growing and compare it with other high yielding methods.

Of those two I'd say train gutter. It would be really interesting to see another rain gutter build from you. :) A very nice harvest of tomatoes, well deserved and you are as excited as I'd be with a harvest like that!

Hey Hoocho I am one of your patron subscribers and stoked to see the rain gutter end caps. I had real success with reducing aphid damage last summer with a hydro additive I used in my dutch bucket pepper system. Would you be able to do a test of this additive so I know if it is worth me using it next summer. I am in the lower South Island of NZ and our summers are short and my green house is small thanks fella. My theory is the trace elements in this additive reduce the amount of nitrates in the leaves making the plant less attractive to aphids as they convert the nitrates to more complex amino acids and proteins more quickly meaning there is less nitrogen in the form of nitrates.

Have you done a video on your method of pruning the tomato plants?
@ragnarandy3 жыл бұрын
How about trying to grow the largest plant you can in kratky barrel -I’m growing a chilli (Dorset naga ) in a sixty litre food storage barrel with masterblend nutrients here in the U.K. - after seeing the plants grown by seaspring and Peter Stanley here on KZbin- I think you would be able to grow a massive plant with your weather . You could make it a dwc and add an air pump - doing a tomato this way would be exciting to see what size it could get to - and the amount it would produce- but to answer your question I think the new design hoocho tomato bucket I would like to see - Great videos keep them coming big fan of hydro And your style of experimenting - 👌👍🇬🇧

I've trawled the Web but in the UK we don't have the same guttering that you guys use the only thing close is ventilation tube either 100mm round or rectangular and our down pipes are 68mm 😵 so the only other option to keep the costs low are the grey 110mm soil pipe £10 ish for 3m but actual hydroponic rails £30 for 2m so from my perspective I would say buckets but what ever you do is an eye opener especially the time lapse shots 👍👍
