larryevol we aren't in as big a bubble as you think..now if you were talking about Americans the same age as the people in the interview I would say okay you might have a point..but the younger generation is more traveled. plus social media allows for interacting with people from other countries and cultures..Also, I lived in China for 5 and my sister studied abroad for a semester because it was a requirement at her school..yeah we mostly get media, entertainment and sports that are American based but that doesn't mean they don't show things from other countries. Example: Sat afternoon, soccer ( football) is broadcast on national channels like nbc and I'm not talking about like American teams but European leagues and such..also my college and many colleges have rugby teams..yeah speed skating isn't popular here but I don't think it's as popular anywhere else outside of the Netherlands or maybe South Korea...But hockey is very popular especially where I'm from, Washington DC and our team is the best in the league right now. Also it depends on the region. American football is really popular in the south, where as up north, in more urban settings basketball is more popular..I'm not saying you opinion is wrong but I think most people from other countries get second hand info about the United States..I'm mean we are the third largest country in the world but most people only know about NY or California .

amsterdope Actually, the secret of the success of the Dutch United East Indies Company was the comparably "soft-hand" approach towards the local rulers. The willingness to comply to local customs made them the preferred trading partner over other European nations. For a very long time, the Dutch were the only ones allowed to trade in Japan by the Japanese ruler, simply by acknowledging that ruler to be sovereign over all of Japan and bowing down to him when demanded.

Americans don't even know how much influence the Netherlands had on America. Allot of Americans speak Dutch as well, I don't think they realize tough. Specially around the New York area. New York used to be New Amsterdam and the Dutch influence over America is huge! The Dutch Republic was one of the first nation-states of Europe where citizenship and civil liberties were extended to large segments of the population. The framers of the U.S. Constitution were influenced by the Constitution of the Republic of the United Provinces, now known as The Netherlands. The Dutch predicted the American uprising against the English 150 year before it happened. It was the dutch feeling of independent the Americans later made their own by kicking out the English. Many words of Dutch origin came into American vernacular directly from New Netherland. For example, the quintessential American word Yankee may be a corruption of a Dutch name, Jan Kees. Knickerbocker, originally a surname, has been used to describe a number of things, including breeches, glasses, and a basketball team. Cookie is from the Dutch word koekje or (informally) koekie. Boss, from baas, evolved in New Netherland to the usage known today. For instance the girl, Grace van der Waal. Grace is American whether van der Waal is clearly Dutch. In fact 6 American presidents had Dutch ancestry including, Martin van Buren, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt and George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush. Most people don't even realize they basically speak a version of Dutch when they eat a "cookie". Next time when you want to compare how good your country is, try figure your own word for cookie out first.

Stand above the other person's statements. His ignorance says enough about his statements, you no longer have to waste time defending yourself. Think of Wi-Fi, the roots of New York, Phillips, ASML, Bluetooth, the four-wheel drive, the Variomatic and many other inventions. You swooped in at the last minute while the Russians were dying by the millions ''freeing'' (I'm not naive I understand Russian motives) most of Europe. Besides that, allied forces in the Netherlands mainly consisted out of Canadian, Polish and British forces, supplemented by some American. Belgian and Dutch forces. This is why we honor our Canadian friends every year by sending them some Tulips ;) Almost 1/3 of the Dutch population was a Nazi supporter? Yes, the Canadians freed the north. But only when we freed the south a year before that, and when the war was basically won... My grandfather was Dutch. He left during WW2 because many of my Dutch family members were NAZI supporters and collaborators. He joined the US army in 1941 and freed the south of the Netherlands in 1944. Then continued to fight the NAZI's in Germany. My Grandfather told me that 1 out of 3 people agreed with NAZI's. As in: they did not mind the NAZI's invading the Netherlands... A lot of Dutch people don't even know that their grandparents were NAZI supporters or collaborators. Simply because they were ashamed to tell and because the government agreed that it should be kept from the younger generations. The total list of Dutch NAZI collaborators is not public information. You need special permission to see those lists... And those list only contain collaborators and Dutch SS. Supporters of NAZI's were not accounted for. My granddad was an honest man, I trust him when he says that 1/3 were NAZI supporters.

I just did some rough calculations to find out the ratio of United States vs Netherlands. Numbers from 2018. Coast line length US vs NL 153.645 km ÷ 450 km = 341,4 US has 341,4 times more coastline Surface area US vs NL 9.834.000 km² ÷ 41.543 km² = 236,7 US is 236,7 times larger GDP US vs NL 2018 20.540 B ÷ 913,7 B = 22,5 US GDP is 22.5 times higher National dept US vs NL 2018 22 trilion ÷ 0.00048 trillion = 45833,3 US dept is 45833,3 times higher Stroopwafels US vs NL Couldn't find a statistic of stroopwafels in the USA so ima go ahead and give them a DNF(0). 0 ÷ 220 million = ∞ Conclusion: With a teensie weensie country that is 236,7 times smaller, Netherlands only makes 22.5 times less money. But also has 45833 times less dept. But most importantly. The Netherlands makes infinitely more stroopwafels than the US.

Americans, like this joke of a presenter, tend to bash anything that Americans can't do or can't be good at, because it's in the American mind that they must be the greatest in everything. In the 90s, nobody gave a damn about cycling. That was dull, there were no explosions and fire and people don't start a fight every five minutes. Until there was Lance Armstrong, who won the most prestigious tournament, the Tour de France, like five or six times in a row. And then all of a sudden, it was a great sport to watch. Yeah right....
@Barrrt3 жыл бұрын
As a Dutch person I loved this playful banter. The Dutch coach went in pretty hard but the American dude struck back with nothing but ad hominems, and he realized that and and smiled every time he finished a sentence. It was fun :-) I would have actually enjoyed listening to the coaches opinion on how America COULD win. The opening question: "Did we lose because of our suits" is scapegoating your outfit for failure, and I think the Dutch coach is trying to make the point that there is a cultural and financial problem plaguing the American ice skating teams. But instead of listening the American interviewer goes mentioning the Netherlands is a 3rd tier Euro country which is like saying Las Vegas is a 3rd tier casino city. Oh well :-) I'm off to the doctor because it's free here.
@consideringorthodoxy5495 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's scapegoating for failure, this is just some random tv reporter who probably has seen that these teams are making such minute changes to their gear, stuff that you wouldn't think would help, but they are spending a lot of money on and is probably thinking that the sport is so optimized now that little things like that is what actually makes the difference. It's a little bit of ignorance about a sport she will never have to think about again in her life and the dutch dude took it as an opportunity to over analyze what she was thinking then project it onto the rest of America.

Amsterdam here: thanks for that Jillert, everyone in the world should celebrate such clear analysis and such open honesty. If we were all this honest with each other and actually listened instead of getting defensive, the world would have 50% less problems and be 500% further ahead. While I sympathize that hearing the truth can be tough, it is the only way to get a complete and honest picture of ourselves; and the only way to get better and win. Much respect to the two girls in this clip, even though it’s difficult to hear, they listen and try to understand. This guy on the other hand, he’s going to have a hard time growing with an ego and sense of national pride as fragile as that.. Much love to everyone in the States. "You do one thing, that's all you got?" The only thing the US is good at is basketball and American Football (which basically only Americans play). The Netherlands is good at hockey, the real football, speedskating, swimming, darts, gymnastics. Than he also says that you can't compare the spectator experience within speedskating and American football, because in speedskating they only skate in circles. However, American football is in my opinion one of the most boring sports. You get 20 seconds of action and then a 2 minute commercial. And that every 5 minutes. And talking about riding in circles.. What about NASCAR? Where they race in circles for 300-600 laps. But that's apparently lots of fun.

Ice skating is a national pride and cultural habit here since our country used to always freeze over, lots of history involved and unfortunately the natural ice doesn't seem to freeze anymore, last 5+ years at least.. so now its a rare phenomenon, the ice-skating sport is in the cultures DNA if you will.
