Yes, it is another one of those sandwich where it is hard to discern where the name came from. After all, the name Dutch Lunch Sandwich of 1,001 Sandwiches from 1936, may have been a nod to the use of tinned fish in Dutch cuisine. But I suspect that the author was leaning into the more pejorative use of Dutch back in the day. Still, despite its small size, it seems like it’d be a tasty little number. Just not, you know, filling.

You'd think it would have been Scottish, not Dutch, lol. I tell ya, this has long been a favorite in our house - whenever my husband isn't around for a meal, the kids and I break out the saltines and canned sardines and have a great meal. My husband doesn't like any tinned fish; it's a wonder our marriage has succeeded, lol.

I had a Dutch boss once who asked me to bring a sandwich from the canteen. When I asked what he wanted he said ‘ just bring me a Dutch sandwich’. I came back with a plane drie piece off baguette thinking Dutch = stingy = cheap = plain. Apparently he wanted a cheese sandwich. Oepsie 😇☺️

Cool. Now when I haven’t had anything but some cheese crackers all day, I can legitimately say I ate a sandwich.

Nope. First, that ruling was to settle a who can open a restaurant where dispute so, not wide-reaching. And two, in practicality, they are not sandwiches (though I do love them both)

Some locations and other things in North America were labelled “Dutch” when that was actually a misinterpretation of “Deutsch”, meaning German (in German). You would have to look back to the location and probably immigrant population who popularized this - it could have been either Dutch or German.

Dutch people love herring (raw) and onions. I've eaten it there many times. Maybe it's a nod to that. They don't eat it on saltines though!

Always hopes you would get a Dutch sandwich! The Dutch love their bread and have if for almost every meal. Would expect some cheese, but canned sardines and salmon? Yikes 😂. Maybe for international sunday, you can try to make a ‘broodje kroket’: deepfried ragout on bread😋😋
