I would love to see a modern-day wrestler name himself K Faybe and his whole gimmick is using all the outdated kayfabe tricks. Like he is a total throwback 70s or 80s wrestler. The thing is he is totally bought into it and is so unaware that he believes everyone else is too.. I will give you an example, someone puts him in a headlock or sleeper and he starts going out... After a min or so he realizes the ref isn't picking his arm up and dropping it like they used to do back in the day. so he gets irritated "wakes up" and tries to force the ref to pick his own hand up and drop it...all the while he is so committed to kayfabe that he goes to any length because he wants to be able to not let it drop on the 3rd attempt to get a "pop"...which in turn kills kayfabe at the same time.... A comedy character like Santino or Eugene

Dutch wrestles tweener leaning heel here--a style that would become popular in the Attitude Era, except this was less sports entertainment street fight and had more moves like a legitimate wrestling match. I was born around the time this match happened, so this was a bit before my time, but I used to watch stuff like this on ESPN during the daytime in the late 80s/early 90s. I think it was old AWA stuff. I actually like the now comparatively low production values and intimate feel of it, and my preference for that style/feel would carry over into Crockett and early WCW. (That said, those ropes, to use James's British English, certainly are "dodgy.") The end talking about the intricate business model of the time shows that pre/post WWF wrestling really was two different worlds. But I like the idea of a state "licensing" you via a "union" much as a state would sanction a bout with a boxer's license. As far as the unions, I'm surprised Vince with his independent contractor model was able to be so successful out of the Northeast with its more union friendly approach. Based on the WWF's later success, it would seem most logical to be based out of Memphis, but the wrestling down South tended to be grittier and have lower production values than Vince's product. So Stamford, CT and Atlanta, GA as the home of the two great 80s-90s wrestling promotions? I would have never guessed it given Memphis's importance to pro wrestling.

The license was a way of having control and to know who was in the area and it was away of giving some Muppets a job and away of paying them being the fee . It would be an ideal job for a wrestling fan get to go to all the shows and get paid for it ,and collect the license money and hand out licenses. Probably a part time job in the weekends and night time so the guy could have a 9/5 job through the week or a retirement job.

Towards the end when Dutch was talking about his "union card", what he meant was a state-issued wrestling license for the states that had athletic commissions such as Pennsylvania, which he mentioned. There was obviously no actual "union". The state athletic commissions being involved with sanctioning pro-wrestling were a total cash grab by the state governments, which is why McMahon came out in 89 or 90 and said that the matches were "exhibitions" and should not, therefore, require sanctioning by the state athletic commissions. Saved a ton in tax payments to the government bureaucrats in the state athletic commissions.

This match wasn't so bad. Look up Sgt. Slaughter vs Paul Fisher sometime. Fisher was, from what I understand, a rock musician who was in a band that played the old Lehigh Valley Fairgrounds where they taped Championship Wrestling and somehow Fisher got backstage for the tapings. They needed someone to work against Slaughter and somehow Fisher convinced them to let him be the guy. They locked up at the start of the match, Slaughter gave him a forearm across the neck or jaw, then put him in the Cobra Clutch. It was really over that quickly, and Slaughter really stiffed him. One story I heard was they paid him for the match with a bucket of KFC fried chicken.
