Maybe because I am not a very wealthy man but $700 a week in the early 90's seems like some pretty decent money for a rookie wrestler. That's roughly $1600 in today's money. Which adds up to around $80k a year.
@darksideon
@darksideon 7 ай бұрын
You're correct. People tend to talk about past money by today's standards. 700 a week is great when you take into account that rent on average was around 300-450 a month in the 90s, and groceries/utilities were considerably cheaper as well.

They did build Brakkus as German. But when he tried to do a promo in German he stuttered and stumbled over every single word barely even able to introduce himself. The german commentary tried to save the situation by saying he might forgot the language due to not being in Germany for a long time, but it was way too bad for him getting over as a German wrestler in Germany.

Tiger Ali Singh was grandfathered into the business without paying his dues because of his dad being famous in Japan and that got him his start in tag matches with his dad. His dad was fascinating in himself being a megastar for years as a heel with crazy entrances and later known for deathmatches, he was also fairly popular in Canada during the 70's. I think with this kid his dad pushed him too soon and Vince saw what his dad did in Japan and hoped somehow to recreate it but he stunk up the joint.

I was a 12 year old kid fascinated with bodybuilding, so I knew Barakas as Achim Albrecht. He was big and wide and ripped, but didn't do a whole lot in the pro leagues of bodybuilding if I remember correctly- but was seen a lot in ads. Strange to make a similar impression in two businesses. But, here we are talking about it still. So, that's something anyways...

To be fair though, being successful at the pro-level in bodybuilding is more difficult than any other sport. It's not just gear and how hard you work in the gym. It's the hours and hours of practicing poses and the great diet. And if you don't have the genetics, there isn't much you can do about that.
@ultimateformulations

@@jd9119 agreed. He had a genetically wide waist and not the best aesthetic "flow.". And while not super tall, was tall enough to be a challenge to fully fill out in comparison to more compact competition. Trust me, i know the feeling. If I didn't jump on the WWF/E bandwagon in 1997 (late 1996, hey, the Stone Cold injuring Pillman is what got my eyes glued, but not fully yet), maybe I would've, but it was 1997, the year that I was introduced to the In Your House Arcade game in which Warrior was the only wrestler I didn't know because the other nine wrestlers were still on the roster while Warrior wasn't, and then I start my action figure collection on Jakks Series 2 starting with Undertaker and Bret Hart while seeing that the rest of the series featured Owen Hart, Vader, and Shawn Michaels along with? the only IYH roster member to not be on the WWF roster since the Summer of 1996 The Ultimate Warrior (even though I had a better chance of knowing Warrior before I even heard of Brakkus, and I make jokes about Tom Brandi being forgettable, this Brakkus guy holds no candle to him, but at least he can say he's more remembered than Kevin Quinn, I feel sorry for Quinn in this category)

Who did he kill? I guess I never heard about that incident. Although, I haven’t followed wrestling very seriously since the early 2000’s - so it very easily could have been something I simply missed.

@@ForeverRetro31 ever heard that phrase "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink"? Same applies here...doesn't matter WHO trained him, you can't make a boulder move if it doesn't want to...brakkus legit had ZERO business being in the ring...NO teacher could train a block of wood properly. Personally, I LOVED brakkus because he definitely had "a look" but that's all that he had
