@areee999
@areee999 2 жыл бұрын
@Ministry of Mystics I have experience with all these except for Niolox. It all depends on the situation, knife design, and what you want to use it for. A Becker BK-9 in n690co would be a bit of a hassle because it chips way more easily than 1095 would for purposes that the BK-9 is made for. A Kizer Vanguard folding knife in 1095 would also be a bit of a hassle because it will rust. 14c28n is mostly for smaller sized knives. I like the Garberg, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. I'm convinced that Niolox is good, but also a lot more expensive than 1095 if you would buy a knife made for the same purpose. It also takes longer to sharpen. CoS is my favorite steel in terms of performance. It can be put on any knife because it is so versatile. But then again, way more expensive than 1095 if not as expensive as super steels. The reason why 1095 and AUS-8 are still very popular is because the huge variety of price ranges and knife designs to choose from. And in terms of performance, 1095 because of its toughness. AUS-8 because it is stainless. Also, 1095 is easy to modify without any special sharpening tools and holds a better edge than AUS-8 while being in the same price range no matter the knife design. Hence why I'd take 1095 over AUS-8.

I guess I don't see why this video is so controversial. Destruction tests are hard on a knife. You started off showing your preferred knife which also has a broken tip. You highlighted pros and cons, which are obvious. There's only one reason this is considered drama, and that's because it's a KZbinrs knife. It looked pretty fair to me. I don't expect much from destruction tests and I hate tip tests... The fingernails on a chalkboard of the knife world. The only reason I did David's knife is I thought a lot of what was being said was inaccurate. But I generally don't like doing other KZbinrs knives because of the inevitable drama. You literally cannot win in this. If you said it was great, you'll catch shit. If you point out some flaws, you'll catch shit. Either way, you catch shit. I was super fair to the point of being a lawyer for both sides in my MSK-1 video, and I caught shit just for doing an MSK-1 video 🤣 That being said, I still have to find you a JX5. I bet you could squeeze Jason for a JX6 though. I don't care if you do an honest review on my stuff. You need to hit up LT for a Jessmuk or Jason for a JX6. JX5s won't be back for several months.

DBK objectively saw the flaws. It's a drama because Lilly had such high demands, no knife was good enough for her, it must have been the ultimate knife to survive the apocalypse. There is a huge disappointment : very poor edge retention, fragile tip, sheath dulling the blade, slippy handle. Her fierce fans defend her despite these obvious facts. Her reaction was not correct, she deleted her comment and all the answers. She causes controversy (Fallkniven bashing) but can't stand when it is against her. A huge ammount of drama ingrédients

Finally an honest review after several of convenience. First version had better micarta handle, a nonsense to downgrade to slippery g10, and had straight V-edge which is worse than the convex you had on this second version. Gadget yoyo Oh really? The toughness is about equivalent between g10 and micarta, especially realistically speaking. I have a busse combat knife that I have struck on the micarta handle to baton, there’s absolutely no wear to it. G10 isn’t hard to scuff or mar, though it doesn’t casually do so. In this regard the texture/feel is much more relevant.

I got one...the second run with g10. It's just ok. To me, the closest analogs are the SRK and the Tops B.O.B. Fieldcraft. Both of those are better knives across the board. The sheath problem on the APO1 is really...problematic. I would rather they have included a decent nylon web sheath with multiple attachment options than a badly-designed and poorly fitted gfn one. Again, it's just ok, but for the money, there are much better options.

Kinda sounds to me like the main problems with this knife are material problems - soft steel that sharpens easily but won't hold an edge, and slippery scale materials without a decent knurl pattern to improve grip. I remember Lilly mentioning that her prototypes had Micarta scales, but that was too expensive so she had to switch to another material. So, this knife seems like a fair knife for the cost, but it would probably be awesome if three things were changed: 1) Switch to a harder steel --------------------------------->(queue all the stupid "hard" jokes by Mikkie)(queue all of the stupid "slippery in the hand" jokes by Mikkie)(queue all of the "rubbing" by Mikkie)

There also a bit difficult to sharpen, especially the A1. ( Yes i know it's convex and you pull the edge for sharpening ). CPM3V fan myself, the best of all worlds. At no time have I ever felt compelled to beat a perfectly good knife through firewood. A man with a knife can survive but a man with an axe can live like a king. I own many axes and there are many fine axes made with good steel that is hardened properly and will last a lifetime. On the trail, my axe or saw gets used way more than my knife. I do appreciate the testing because I think knife quality has improved as a result.

Lilly is the person who criticized that the tip of Fallkniven A-1 is fragile but how many of us stub hard materials then squeeze our knife's handle? At this point, her aim is missing the point and it is completely contradicted since the tip of her knife is also easy to break. It is sure that her knife is the imitation of "SRK" of Cold Steel and Fallkniven A-1 but I will buy "SRK" or Fallkniven A-1 since her knife has many defects and less merits.

Aus8 is not a bad steel when the ht is done well. It's not the best on edge retention but it's tough. Still it's a budget steel and the APO 1 doesn't have a budget price. There's a video out there where they do a destruction test on the SRK in Aus8 and it hold up really well. (If anyone has the SRK in Aus8 and is willing to trade or sell?). The tip test is kinda a self fulfilling prophecy in many cases. Having a swedge is usually not good for a tip destruction test. Also when the blade is tapered like the F1. It did amaze me that the APO 1 did bend on the first try since it has no swedge and it's not tapered. For that reason I think the ht on these knives is really off. About Lilly. Over the years I have called her bluff many times because she was just giving wrong information that could potentially become dangerous. But all women that are into bushcraft and survival have many subscribers. Most men just like women that are into bushcraft and survival.

Yes agreed! She has a large following because she's a girl in a men's world. As for the aus8 it should have held up much better indeed. I think poor Taiwanese quality control and knowledge of proper heat treatment is the killer here. I've never been fond of aus8 but for a cheap knife I'd have no problems with it. As soft as the tip was the edge still chipped. I get the feeling the blade is partially heat treated. I've spoken to Chinese manufacturers before who did a different HRC on the spine than on the edge. Anyway, this aus8 didn't perform nearly as well as aus8 for cold steel does. Lilly should have noticed as her favorite knife was the srk in aus8
@StevanOutdoor
@StevanOutdoor 5 жыл бұрын
@@DutchBushcraftKnives I think you are right about the partial heat treat or at least different heat treat. That would explain the bending and chipping in one blade. There are more manufacturers that use this technique of different heat treatment even dating back to the early samoerai swords. But the spine did throw good sparks so it was hard enough for that. It's possible that Lilly did notice but did not have the will or the power to correct the situation. Lilly being one person and not a large company with lawyers and stuff. At least you guys gave the knife an honest test and review. Stuff I wouldn't do with a knife but stuff that Lilly does or at least did with the S1. But again. Lilly is a woman and also the guys doing the review seem to give her some slack for that instead of just reviewing the knife regardless.

There's an advantage to being able to sharpen a knife in the woods with a creek stone. I like the steel she uses. She tried all kinds and found it to be the best for a survival knife. Her refinements of late have really made an excellent outdoor tool.
@Charles-A
@Charles-A 3 жыл бұрын
Yet there are tougher knives with harder blades and still eady to sharpen. Also, if you have some common sense, if you know your knife has a crappy edge retention you should pack a small sharpening stone/strop and not wait until you have to use a creek stone. That scenario isn't realistic unless you're both poorly prepared or don't know your gear. Is her knife okay? Yes, and the shape, relatively high toughness and the sheath(leaving aside the slight rubbing problem) are really nice, but it's far from being the quality of knife that deserves such an absurd price tag considering very good knives like the SRK in cpm 3v are around that price yet offer so much more

I'd have a Bear Grylls over this one. Aus8 was never going to cut it. Cold Steel's RSK's a better knife depending on the steel choice. F1's a good knife. Survival Lilly is learning as she goes along and could really do with some tuition. She isn't any expert.

If you are anything like me, we learn something new every day. Silly if we thought we new it all. I'll often ask the locals as they usually know what works in their neck of the woods, for they have been prospering well enough for a long time. Fun if I learn a tip or two, even more fun if there is a tip I can give which is new to them. Exchanging ideas is always good, whatever works. Anyhow, I've rather given up on Survival Lilly. There are more reliable sources of information. Far too many Y tube "Expert" amateurs out there. I'm not sure Cold Steel makes the SRK as well as they have in the past?? Not much I can't do with a pocket knife. Heck a SAK with its wood saw does it. I like a Skrama and a Silky Saw too. Knowing how to keep them sharp enough is more important than the knife. Soft steel like on say the Glock need loads of maintenance; can't break them but wow are they soft.

Last year I bought an Enzo Trapper 115 full flat grind in 12c27 for 88 pounds. I don't baton bricks or pry with it. I am happy with my purchase and don't need APoor1.

Good advice from you for Lilly. The manufacturer should help make adjustments.

unfortunately for her is that the manufacturer has no clue how to make real knives either. lets be honest here for a sec, its a cheap china blade that is tryed to be selled with hyper high margin bc a girl from the interweb promoting it. such blades go for 30 to max 50 bucks at every fkng amusement park + normally u get at least some kind of ugly looking n funny smelling teddy bear on top of it (mostly from the same factory as the knife). 150? lol gtfo i am from austria as well like she is - we have a long long history of finest tool steels, firearms, hunting, high quality precision tools, all that shit - she could have teamed up with a serious austrian or european knife company but she went the china route - lil bit embarrassing ' - A knife that can withstand tough survival situations, - A knife that serves my needs, - A knife that won’t let me down.” ~ Survival Lilly.' - trollolol grow up idiot, we live in austria, there r zero survival situations wtf - lol from a girl with glasses - fkn internet bs makes me lil bit mad nowadays

@@stitchedlips6764 I think a knife like that has its place, basically a sharpened crowbar you can abuse. A lot of militaries do this, like the British army's survival knife: Cheap, thick, suits all purpose. Over $100 for it though? No thanks. It seems she's either ignorant (which does appear to be the case), or she's intentionally fleecing her subscribers.

She has other Apo 1S not this only in AUS-8 steel, she made also in SK85 and in D2 steel. DBK ask her to give you to try the other two, which I'm interested in.

Lilly posted new versions of APO-1. Version with Bohler K110 steel (similar to D2 high carbon "half" stainless) and SK85 steel (similar to SK5 high carbon steel). Prices are nearly the same. Would be great to see some tests too.

$150 apo-1 or $100 or less for a Garberg, I'll stick with Mora. Side note, aus8 really? Another side note, she has to be making a ton of profit per knife and you know her fanbase bought a ton of these.

Natalie, you cannot go wrong with Mora. I have robust, companion hd, 511, 546, on and on and on. I love them all. Garberg is so resilient. I punish them in the field doing camping/bushcraft. I will take the mora over anything else when I need good reliable blade. I also have malanika and other. Nice, but mora is best. Can’t beat price and quality.

I think some KZbin channels have a high entertainment value . Men love to watch videos of a woman doing anything related to survival. I’ve seen some channels were the woman basically usually fails at all most everything she tries, but they still get 100K views per video. Having a branded knife seems to be the big step into making more money with your fame. Hasn’t just about everyone that gets a certain level of popularity made their own knife “up to their standards” Grylls much maligned knife must have made a bundle for him and Gerber. It was the highest selling knife for one of the years it was offered and help introduce all his other rebranded Gerber products.

Why spend over 100 bucks on a fancy bushcraft knife when a cheap mora can do the same
@TheWtfnonamez

I love Mora knives. Best bang for your buck. I got to say though, I am uncomfortable with their roast of Lilies knife. A limited production run knife, designed by a camp craft youtuber, which is pretty decent .... for 100 quid, is pretty good. I think Moras are great knives at the 15-30 pound price point, but the more you spend the less you get. I spent £100 on a high end Mora and it was a bit rubbish tbh. The Apo 1 was much better at that price point. I own about 8-9 moras I think .... but if I was to advise someone wanting to spend £100 I would recommend the Apo1 over the Garburg.
