For the average person the cheap stones ROCK. Even if you have to flatten them ever couple uses thats fine. Most folks will sharpen 1-3x a year and if the 3000 isnt really 3000 just buy the 6000 for $10 and youre good. I can do this buy-ise-flatten and replace like 5x for the money
@alamore5084 Жыл бұрын
Agree, just buy a few different grades. If an 8000 is not an 8000 you have a 10000 etc. Then finish with stop and WD40/ Ajax mix for very smooth sharp finish!

cmon the stones did a wonderful job they sharpened the knife after all didn't they? And if you have knives in the 50 euro range it makes no sense to get stones that are more expensive than your knives. It is like spending more money to clean the car than the cost of the car..
@mrnice7525 жыл бұрын
I have these stones and they work great. They don't wear nearly as fast as these guys made out and they cut the steel of my D2 knives and 01 tools with ease... They are right about the grit ratings though, they are more like half the number on the side. That's not even an issue once you own it though, just annoying if you buy the wrong thing. I'd rather have my set of 3 stones, that's 6 grits for $30, than one expensive stone.
@DutchBushcraftKnives5 жыл бұрын
These Stones are definitely useful but there are some things to consider. I used these stones under another brand name to first try water stones sharpening. My biggest frustrations where: - sharpening is a mess because you need to water the stones so often - you bite into the stone much more easily because the stone is soft - for regrinding the wear one these stones is frustrating. You get thick slurries and after 1 regrind you need to flatten the stone which is again a messy process. Imo if you have a few knives just get a dc4. If you have a lot of knives or do a lot of sharpening get the choseras. They'll pay themselves back in terms of longlivity. It also changes sharpening from annoying to being fun for me at least
@mrnice7525 жыл бұрын
@@DutchBushcraftKnives Great points, I'm not saying they are the best on the market. Simply bang-for-buck I think they are the great. For the mess I just use a large plastic tray, and for re-profiling I'd rather use my course diamond plate than any stone. You still need to dress the surface of harder stones as they load up with steel, the softer stones self-clean and as long as you use the whole surface hardly dish at all. Again, I'm not disagreeing with your guys at all, I just think for the avarage consumer the cheap stones are better than you made out. Thanks for replying and all your quality content!
@mapleenderson85415 жыл бұрын

@@Universal_Craftsman I would buy them if they’re on sale. I have 120,220, 320, 500, 1K,4K,8K. Good Coarse Stones(IMO): Chosera 400, Imanishi Latte 400, Nanohone 220/400, DMT Coarse. Maybe 220 Glass (120,220,320 wear down quickly). That order.
@Universal_Craftsman2 жыл бұрын
@@egmluvr I saw that as well, 320 Shapton glass is rather fine. At Knivesandtools i would pay 200€ or 220$ for 120 Shapton pro, and 1000, 3000, 6000 glass, the 320 isn't in stock now, but for 45$ it wouldn't be that bad. I think the 120 will be the only one that i would manage to wear down, but I also have an Atoma 140 and some cheap generic coarse stones, so it will probably last a long time. I see your point, technically speaking it makes no sense to have this much stones, Outdoors55 sharpens all his pocket knives with a DMT fine and a 3 micron and a 1 micron strop and gets outstanding results fast. Sadly it's usually just about collecting tools and prestige when using more stones.😄

With something like d2 a steel I am a fan of for my edc work knives this would be about 12 hours of work. Then when I touch them up it takes me about half hour. Cool video, Im a big fan. sorry to be picky but I don't think CPM 3V is a super steel. Yes it is a great steel that holds a good edge for a long time (and it's a miracle compared to 1095) and is very tough. I own and love my Bark River Bushcrafter in said steel and use it regularly, but the term super steel doesn't match, edge retention isn't that of S30V (in my opinion another not super steel) let alone insane stuff like Rex 45, Maxamet, M4, Cru-Wear, K390, M390 an a bunch of other stuff. But in terms of bushcraft probably the best steel (maybe elmax) but yes. Very cool, reliable, usable steel. Good videos keep them coming (Im just a steel nerd on the internet so disregard if too annoying.)
@praetor474 жыл бұрын
CruWear and 3V aren't all that different. 3V is definitely in the "super" category, but its "super" characteristic isn't edge retention, but toughness. also, as far as stainless steels go, AEB-L (and variants, like Nitro V) and CPM154/RWL34 are better than Elmax as they're significantly tougher. AEB-L is probably the toughest stainless steel that still has solid retention and the edge is so stable you can put a really really keen one on there and improve the edge retention even further. your Bark River, just like mine, aren't good indicators of 3V 'cause BRK hot grind the blades, burning them, and ruining the HT at the edge, so it has a HRC ~5 points lower than at the spine (hence the disappointing edge retention)

Have you guys had a chance to try the Shapton Glass series? Definitely not a cheap option, but I’ve been very happy with their performance. The 8000 didn’t leave quite the finish I had hoped for, and the 16000 was still a little shy of what I would expect. The cheaper ones I’ve tried off Amazon have worked (Mikarto, was actually a pretty decent cheap option, and I’ve actually purchased their chef and Santoku knives, and those are actually quite nice). Though you do end up resurfacing a lot. Personally, I don’t mind. It’s more a hobby than a necessity to me most of the time. I will say the sharp pebble though, whichever was the white/green, the green side just deteriorated and I think dulled my knives. The King Waterbear 4000 left one of the nicer mirror polished though, and was fairly cheap. $35-45 I think... Anyways, just curious if you guys had any experience with the Shapton Glass, before I went on a tangent. Haha. Good stuff though guys!

The real question is how sharp do you really need a knife? I will not believe that many people need a knife sharper than the cheap stones will make a knife. I have cheap water stones like in the video in 1000, 2000, and 5,000, plus one that I think is made by somebody else labeled 10,000. It doesn't "feel" like 10,000 when compared to the other stones, but then reviews of the one I bought people swear it really is 10,000. It's not like there is an industry standard on grit, and different brands or lines of stones, different materials etc, can all effect how a stone feels. You still need to strop the edge with any stones. If you have to do some serious edge repair, get a cheap low grit diamond stone like the four sided one from Harbor Freight that's like $12. Then all you need is a couple of those $10 stones, some wet/dry sand paper of 1000, 2000, 3000, grit, then a leather belt with polishing compound. I use the green Harbor Freight polishing compound. 90% of my sharpening is simply stropping on the wet/dry paper and then the leather strop. Only occasionally will I start on my 1000 grit cheap stone, rarely do I go any higher as I can't tell a difference skipping the higher grit stones and stropping vs. working through the higher grit stones then stropping. and very rarely, only when reprofiling an edge will I ever even use the cheap diamonds. I have the thin set of diamond plates from Harbor Freight as well that I occasionally resurface my stones with or grind the spine of a knife flat. Watch some Kyle Noseworthy for my favorite sharpener I've found on youtube. You can watch 10 different sharpening videos and see 10 different ways of doing things. The only things are to hit the right angle you need, and minding your burrs. This is the longest comment I've ever left on youtube, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk!
