I noticed that Dutch has more words for only / just than any other language I know or am learning - alleen / maar / pas / slechts / enkel / juist / gewoon / zomaar / net / alleen maar / nog maar and the other combinations of two words etc... In English, there are definitely less - only / just / merely / solely / simply and single is kind of similar but single and merely are kind of different at the same time... Besides, English doesn’t have another word to differentiate between something that is considered enough and something that is expected to be done again or to be a higher number of etc - I think only Dutch has this, and I’m not sure about German yet because I am beginner level in German at the moment, but maybe German has it too, I don’t know...

De zin "het is nog maar 9 uur, we hebben nog de hele dag" heeft voor mij een andere betekenis dan "het is pas 9 uur, we hebben nog de hele dag". In de eerste zin moet je nog 9 uur lang iets doen, maar dat geeft niet, want we hebben nog de hele dag. In de tweede zin heb je het alleen over het moment dat het negen uur is, en dat dit betekent, dat we nog de hele dag hebben. Volgens mij zijn dat twee heel verschillende betekenissen. Ik vond deze video, zelfs als moedertaalspreker (is dat een woord?) best lastig!

Oh ja ik zie nu ook de tweede betekenis met “nog maar”, maar toch zou ik “nog maar 9 uur” zelf ook wel echt voor het tipstip gebruiken, want anders zou er nog een werkwoord in de zin moeten “het is nog maar 9 uur lopen/werken/vergaderen” 😊

So you can use "nog maar" as a synonym for 'pas', but can you use 'pas' as a synonym for 'nog maar'? For example in the sentence with 'nog maar' you said: “Ik had eerst 2000 euro en nu heb ik nog maar 9 euro” can you also use 'pas' there? Thanks!

'Pas' is een van de woorden in het Indonesisch die overneemt/absorbeert uit het Nederlands, vooral de Nederlandse grammatica in de jaren '40

Deze les is makkelijk te onthouden. In het Pools is er een soortgelijke indeling. In het Nederlands: allen, pas, maar; in het Pools: tylko, już (ook het woord "al"), dopiero😁 P.S. Je ziet er leuk uit in het zwart😁 Dankjewel❤

In English we can say "I have drank but two cups of coffee today" but that sounds quite archaic. But, if you think of it like that it's way easier to translate maar. So could maar be thought of as "just" and pas as "only just"? And can you say "ik ben maar een kind" for "I am but a child"? Like, "I am but a poor boy..." [From a poor family, I couldn't help myself]. Dank je wel!

Fancy that Kim! XD Jersey. You know Jersey don’t you? That small little country part of the UK off the coast of England even though it’s closer to France? Well describing someone or something from Jersey, is still Jersey! I.E Jersey Royals potatoes! And keep this in mind because Jersey in almost or ar least most other languages apart from English is still Jersey! Oh yeah? Well what do you Dutch call “Jersey the sports top”? “Het hemd?” Cuz that’s basically what it is! 😝😂 Oh yeah! And never, ever ask anybody from Jersey how and why it is NOT part of France but rather Britain cuz they find that insulting! 😝😂 Ha! 😝😂 Galicia, Spain’s time zone makes no sense! That is exactly how I found the channel too. Ik begon Nederlands te leren twee maanden gelede op de appicatie Duo Lingo, when I came back from a short stay in Amsterdam. I also speak English, French, German and my mother tongue Slovenian and it helps. It also makes me want to progress faster in learning Dutch. De appel spreekt geen Nederlands, maar ik wel (een beetje). :> Really like the channel and Kim's explanations. I appreciated the editing in this video too, it's pretty funny. :>
