And how lazy to figure out how to do them properly. He could've used dremel and more time and the cuts would've been much better. the same with sanding too sloppy, too inacurate.

Cut the carbon and lay it into the holes before you epoxy it, when you epoxy use a heat gut to get bubbles out. And use high grit sandpaper like 600-800wet

Props to you! 1st attempt is a cracking attempt. We find any thing with buttons or moving parts are always a pita! The bits you cut out from the button openings can be left in place. Just make sure you let the fabric slightly sag in those openings. After your layers of epoxy you can dremel them out, file them nice and tight and seal them in with your final thin surface coat. No unwanted resin inside the switch holes and clean edges.

I’d like to drop some knowledge if this may. I’ve been skinning parts for over a year. I started just like you, one KZbin. My first and most important piece of advise is to ditch the skinning process and just do vacuum resin infusion because the time and energy involved for a single piece isn’t worth it when any number of issues can pop up (like sanding the weave) 1) Don’t use super 77 or any adhesive. The epoxy mixture starts to eat the adhesive and the CF starts to delaminate from the part and can end in disaster. If you stick to skinning, get a good quality epoxy and use that as your adhesive. Let it set up until it’s sticky like drying syrup and then my the CF. 2 ) Make sure your CF is cut and in it’s final position before you throw down epoxy. (Cut the holes out first) 3) use a scale 👌🏽 4) have a heat gun handy to pop all the tiny bubbles that happen when you mix the two substances together. Do it in the container and do it AFTER you’ve brushed the epoxy on. It lays like glass with some heat. 5) use a good brush. Use something bristles, those foam ones are garbage. 6) your first and second coats should always be the thickest. Sand down flat and then instead of throwing another epoxy layer (which risks bubbles and more imperfections) hit the part with some clear gloss paint. Then treat it like a normal paint job and use ur polisher, etc. 2k clear does a fantastic job after you’ve done the sanding. 7) Elevate the part on a small cup or something so when you brush on the epoxy the drops actually drop off the part and don’t bond it to the table. 8) don’t give up! This shit is hard. My first skin job was a lip. That took me 3 weeks off and on getting everything right. I’ve had it on my car for over a year now and it looks good. Live and learn, keep trying man. You’ll get it but definitely expect to spend money on materials. It’s an expensive learning curve but when you get it, it makes all the hard work worth it.

When masking the part for epoxy, make sure to use quarter inch tape and fine line all the edges before applying epoxy. When the epoxy is still wet you can try pull off all the tape before it settles, and for excess epoxy try paint thinners and clean up everything you don’t want on there. Hope this helps 👍🏽

I send car parts and have someone do this for me, but I believe when you lay down the carbon fiber weave you want to cut it out before you have it all molded. Kind of like a wrap where you stretch the wrap into like the fog light pursing so it goes on the edges that way there is no vulnerable plastic showing when you push the button in, you just see carbon still :)

Awesome job man. I found working with carbon for many years that the bigger the piece the easier it is.

For the holes and edges, you need to trim them while its "green", ie, not fully cured. there will be a bit of time while the resin is firmed up, but not fully solid. Trim it then and you can simply cut away any drips etc

There are lots of videos on doing carbon fiber. There are presurized kits you can buy that will give you professional results. No bubbles, no high or low spots, no brush strokes, no sanding, just perfect professional results. One company I saw on You Tube a while back was from Austrailia that sold a system They posted videos on making hoods and other stuff. But Bobbi is right it all takes practice. I suspect you could get pretty damn good at it with some practice and some more studying. Cameron and Austin probablly would be good at it too.

Get a vacuum bagging setup, and lay down some nylon peel ply over your carbon, that you want to see. Have the vacuum draw in the epoxy, or get prepreg carbon. Then once cured, clean up edges, and clear with standard automotive clearcoat. Way easier than brushing on the epoxy and trying to finish that. Also, if you want to see a master carbon layout/part guy, that builds planes for fun, take a look at Mike Patey's channel.

I dont know how the piece looked like before you started wetsanding it, but no need to start with 400. 1000-1500 then polish, and you will keep more of the layers from the epoxy. or wetsand with 1500 and put 2cotes of clearcote on it, i'll bet it would be sick!

I think you are way to agressive with the sanding? I would start for example with 800 and see what it does. It is easier to start with that and go more agressive than to start agressive immediately because each step you need to get rid of the sanding scratches you are also taking away material which leads to sanding through. Anyhow. Respect for always trying! Update on the flocked dash tomorrow?
