Second movement from Antonin Dvořák's epic symphony No.9 in an excellent instrumentation done in 2019 by my multi-talented student Daniel Matthewes for quartet of double basses. It is in beautifully sounding key D flat major, just like in the symphony. Credits and compliments to my talented students from Hochschule Luzern from the generation 2020 for their wonderful performance of this beautiful, but difficult and piece to perform in this formation. We have done this recording under time pressure, as we had to leave the concert hall after barely have performed it once or twice.
Eternal beauty of this composition was supported by fantastic instruments: three of four double basses used for this recording have been made by Derek High, one of the finest contemporary double bass makers.
Recorded in September 2020 in "Salquin", new large concert hall of the brand new building of the HSLU-Music (Hochschule Luzern- Musik). These chords belong to the first sounds ever performed in this beautiful concert hall. Just two hours after this recording I have performed several pieces with these talented students on the opening celebration of the brand new building 😊

as one who did a composition degree as well as being a pro bass player for 25 years let me say this : the best instrument in the orchestra IS THE ORCHESTRA. a bass can do what a trumpet can't and vice versa. that is why both are in the symphony orchestra

never heard sound like this on the double bass in the states in my 23 yrs living there. Bozo s sound is sublime, velvet like. sorry Ed Barker and Pingel and Rotaru and all the others but Bozo is the s***. congrats,to the students too. bravissimmi! tutti!

i mean every word i.say and i have nothing against the double bass playing in.the USA but (in.my.opinion) it is not nearly as good as ...this high&special type of sound Bozo and his approach off the bass playing(his auditory idea of sound is absolutely amazing)..isn't that what we search for? the sound! cuz notes and intonation there's a dime a dozen who can do that...abd that's about all they do in the states with the double bass playing and not just the bass but in.general(especially orchestra,playing) .... man, i've heard many double bass players students and teachers,and principals of so called major orchestras in the states. i encourage ANYONE who wants to discover a different approach to.the contrabasso and discover certain areas (auditively speaking)of sound that one would think it's not possible on.the bass...well, think.again! and look for Bozo Paradzik! I don't think there's anyone else out there at his caliber(as a performer and pedagogue) these days! I cannot tell you how he generates that velvet like sound ...you'll have to ask.him. follow him.around (or look.for him in Freiburg DE) ...just like Celibidache's disciples did when Celi was around. 👊👊👊❤👍Bozo Paradzik...you are blessed man to carry on, which only makes it even harder cuz your responsability is even greater 🤭👊❤👍

one thing that is rather difficult to do with the final chord of this movement as orginally scored (4 basses and 4 basses onlly) is to play it well with less than 4 basses in the orchestra. the orchestra i was in that time only had 3. so i had to double stop the top two notes. D flat and F . . . . and hope it was in tune oh well, we got away with it . . .

I am myself a musician capable of playing both bow styles and I don't care much about which style people hold the bow, I'm more listening how it sounds. Discussions about this relatively unimportant subject have been rolled out over and over again since decades, usually by the people who have no qualifications to talk about it: of those, who are capable of playing only one of the styles. Stick better to musical qualities and keep away from such discussions 😊🍀

Beautiful music and very well played by you all ! But I wonder why the recording was made with 4 microphones ? From my point of vue, it makes flat and a bit confused rendering. Some sound engineers would only record with two microphones, even a symphonic orchestra. Your example in the forest : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYOseoJqZZ2UqtUsi=tbsNI5j9rk6v-_Ce with the two Schoeps MK2S is very demonstrative, being a really more rich recording with space in it.
