That's true, but in saying that, if that's the sound you want you don't really need to pay big bucks for a custom.

I had this same kit, same “Shiela E” finish but I was never happy with it. I ordered a 16”*16” tom to fill it out a bit and tried all sorts of head combos with no luck. I traded it for a Sonor Delite kit that I found much more tonal and flexible in the tuning. The DW was the best looking kit I ever used but the plaudits stopped there. Engineers hated the DW kit and took the p*ss a bit about me having too much money for my own good, that hurt.

This kit sounds so much better with these heads then the DW stock heads.

I have a kit in the exact same sizes, except mine is silver sparkle and made in 2002.the black badge before they called them collectors series.very nice sound in the smaller sizes.I own 5 other vintage sets.ludwig,rogers,premier.and my dw set is right up there with my vintage sounding kits.

Great kit... worth the money if you have the money! If not, go with the PDP Concept Maple. Exact same sound for 1/5 the price!

Exactly!! I have the concept maple exotic kit and love it. I would never pay for a collector series kit. But watch out dont let a DW "purist "hear ya say that lol. They tend to get a little heated.

I own a collectors series and you can tune these drums in many ways. High, low, no sustain, lots of sustain. It's all about what you want & obviously the heads plays into the sound. I used Aquarian heads & very little sustain v black Emperor sustain forever. I've owned many other brands & in comparison they're one of my many favorites. It's really all about preference, but to say they're trash & don't sound good, that's a bit much.

Ryan Speed I honestly had one and couldn’t get them to sound good no matter what I did and I consider myself a great tuner. Even sound men told me they sounded bad. Mine just rang with no attack and no real note and I tried many different heads. I sold mine. It is cool that you like yours but for me I really did dislike mine.

Gretsch kits aren’t made in the dw factory, dw bought distributing rights from Gretsch. You really think the top end Gretsch are made in Oxnard? The brooklyn, broadkasters and USA custom are still made in North Carolina. Do some research before you start saying dumb things.

DWs naturally have terrible resonance and choked tone because they're an overrated drum company that makes sub par products... if you like quick decay then sure get an overpriced DW, or a $300 poplar kit, they'll sound the same lol

As far as high end kits go DW is the lowest on my list. Sonor or Tama. I'd take a Mapex Saturn kit over the sound of this kit any day. Of course the Saturn kits are walnut/maple shells so they sound rich and punchy!

Dws never sound good to my ears. Would rather have a tama starclassic for fraction of the price and way better hardware better sound better feel better looks. DW toms just never sound good to me and didn’t feel good for every DW kit I’ve played. Tama is just superior in every way imo.
