I’m a professional musician (a cellist) who believes that Bach belongs in a category all by himself. When I was a young piano and cello student I loathed his music because it was taught in a strictly cerebral and unemotional manner. Bach’s phenomenal counterpoint was praised and studied, but the actual emotional and spiritual aspects were never emphasized or discussed. And then I was blessed to have a new teacher who showed me how emotionally rich and deeply spiritual Bach’s music is. My world completely changed, and I now can’t imagine a world that doesn’t contain Bach’s splendid, glorious music.

As a little boy in the early 50s, I just "knew" that the music of Bach and Handel (and later, Purcell) when I heard snippets on the radio or at church, was 'proper' music. Then in 1962 aged 15, while my friends were into the popular singers of the day, I bought an LP of Cochereau playing Bach at Notre Dame with birthday present monies! I still have it.

I feel like this haul was the best gift ever, and if I want to be corny, a gift that will keep on giving, but there is nothing like classical music to fit that description more perfectly.

Picture this (someone who grew up in communist Leipzig, might as well imagine it). Nalchik, Soviet Union, 1974. A long, dark green-painted corridor lit with just two lamps, giving off a weak yellowish light. There were two windows, one at each end, and dozens of doors on either side of the corridor. This corridor was home to some 50 or more families, with a single kitchen shared by all, and just one toilet. There were no showers, rooms lacked running water. Behind each of those doors, you could hear music - for this was the local theater's dormitory where my family lived in a tiny room for 10 years. Music (and cockroaches) were abundant. Next to the window, at one door, you'd find a 5-year-old boy, breathless, leaning with his ear pressed to the keyhole. Heavenly sounds of a violin flowed through the keyhole. It was a stark contrast to the surrounding environment, almost like a scene from a movie. The boy in that moment was me, but the details are minor. Eight years later, at the age of 15, I moved to St. Petersburg. There, I saw a music shop for the first time in my life. I picked up a book - J.S. Bach, Sonatas and Partitas. 'What is this? I've never heard of it.' I brought it home and started playing it on the violin. It was then that I realized that this was the music my professor had been playing all those years, a secret I hadn't dared to inquire about. I believed that music so perfect could only have been created by him. However, I knew I wanted to become a musician, to immerse myself in that world, and to share that better world with people. Life isn't a bowl of cherries, as one saying goes, but it is the music of Bach that gave me the power to do what most deemed impossible, risky, or downright dangerous. It guided me to where I am today. I think others might also want to listen to Bach and find that otherworldly, spiritual power to achieve their desires. Thank you for creating this beautiful video.

Bach brought the feelings of Bliss and Sadness combined in a way no one else has. His work is also influenced by Italian Baroque melody, as he copied out and adapted Vivaldi frequently. It was commonly said during World War II "There are no atheists in foxholes"- whether that is true or not, one only has to listen to JS Bach's music to realize he was tapping into something as cosmic as the Milky Way- my own view is Bach believed he was communicating with the Maker of the Milky Way. Finally, in a world of 20th Century and 21st Century where one is taught in schools "why" one should love modern music at it's most cacophonous level- most who hear Bach, even initially, do not have to be "taught" why to like his music. In the world today where much Baroque music has been pushed off the road- JS Bach speaks to the soul of those who truly love music as it has been defined for thousands of years. Thanks for this mini-documentary- the visuals were wonderful. Those wishing to go further MIGHT look into Robert Greenberg's 32 lecture course on Bach- available quite reasonably on eBay. That course did help me learn just WHY I loved Bach's music so

Bach only repeated God's salvation plan from others. The most qualified person to be the fifth evangelist is Isaiah. One needs to study sacred scriptures closely and discover Isaiah is the perfect candidate. Isaiah was a prophet who prophesized the coming of the Messiah. If Bach was the fifth evangelist, what about Handel who wrote the Messiah? Both were great composers who put the biblical messages to music.
@annep.19052 жыл бұрын
@@aarontham1079 I guess Handel was the 6th, or 7th evangelist, then. 😉
@aarontham10792 жыл бұрын
@@annep.1905 If that is the case, then all believers are evangelists. Bach still would not qualify to be the fifth. You have forgotten there were other Apostles especially Paul and his other fellow Christians brothers who were preachers of the Gospel and martyrs who died for their faith.
@annep.19052 жыл бұрын
@@aarontham1079 I haven't forgotten anything. The point is that Bach left a legacy dedicated to God which has reached throughout the entire world. Naming him "the fifth evangelist" is just a tribute to his work and devotion to God, and his musical retelling of the Life of Christ, taken from the works of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
@aarontham10792 жыл бұрын
@@annep.1905 There are many others who have died leaving faith legacies who are not necessary composers, and they were also martyrs and had seen Jesus such as the Apostles. We have to understand why the first four books of the New Testament known as the Four Gospels are selected, and the authors are named Evangelists. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John Gospels portrayed Jesus in different perspectives. For instance, Matthew affirmed the genealogy of Jesus while John affirmed the Divinity of Christ and so forth. As I have mentioned earlier Isaiah would be the fifth evangelist because his message prophesized Jesus the coming of the Messiah. Today we have many people who evangelize, and their messages are just reiteration of the past Gospel writers' messages. By the way not all gospels are considered divinely inspired as in the books of Thomas, Mary Magdalene and others. If you choose to name Bach, then you need to name others and there are many others who did more before him. Hence, Bach will never be the fifth evangelist. I would consider him one of the many evangelists in the world. We run into playing favoritism just because others are aware of Bach's faith musical contributions. Has one investigated into the works of other saints who are not commonly known? If not, we become partial in our judgment.

The D W team, unlike most contemporary Christians in the US and other western cultures, understands that embodying culture and the appropriate craft skills and metaphors for living is the core from which to build a real conservative future. Such a project is exemplified in the legacy of western culture: the emphasis on deep and deliberate learning that is now known as the ten-year rule of expert performance, which parallels Paul's emphasis on sanctification as a process of becoming Christ-like. Aristotle believed that we become what we repeatedly do, thus making attaining good habits the engine room for driving epistemic, creative, and intellectual virtue. Jordan Peterson provides an illuminating insight into the importance of craft in shaping the hierarchy of competence by highlighting Christ's own apprenticeship in carpentry. Such deliberately learned craft skills would have been open to view to those who lived in the same area as Jesus. It's unlikely he would have been taken seriously if he had done dodgy carpentry. By extension, Christians, who are prone to have a Platonic understanding of the body and thus perpetuate the body/soul dualism, not to mention an obsession with eschatology and the associated acceptance of cultural decline, prioritise harvesting souls at the expense of seeing persons as embodying craft in an endeavour to glorify God across all cultural practices. Bach's musical craft and legacy is the best example of such an endeavour. To quote Martin Luther: " If Christ were to return tomorrow I would still plant my apple tree today."

We are very sorry, but unfortunately we lack the capacity for that: we are only a very small team... We hope you still find something you like on our channel. Best from Berlin!

You do not have to understand the harmonic undulations of Bach in order to be affected by them. His balance of modulation and melody will stimulate anyone with a musical sensibility. A musician draws from Bach what they require for their own purposes (e.g. for a composer) because his music is objectively infallible.
