It is funny that the child pianist has won almost every possible award at his age and yet you guys on YT manage to criticise a single mother and two children who have recently lost their dad. Prodigy or not, best technique or not these kids are beyond what most of us could do at their age. I hope they keep it up and continue to play beautiful music.

Thanks for this short documentary about this family. I discovered videos from Maddox a while ago and even have had e-mail contact with him. Didn't know about the father passing away but I respect the mother for managing to keep the family going on and giving Miles and Maddox a chance of living their dreams as they are really passionat about music

They are both good students - perhaps very good students - but they are not prodigies. That is of a different order altogether. Most professional musicians, however, were like these children - they were not prodigies - it is persistence and opportunities that allow for a career in the end. It seems they have the commitment and their mother is doing what every parent of a musical child must do - support their work and interest, so perhaps they will persist, but both need better teachers. If their technique is not improved it will not allow them to go beyond a certain point. They need a teacher that teaches Russian technique and another that teaches theory in the Japanese style. But the tension, especially in the pianist, needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Listen to Ted Wirth's lectures. I find his the best and easiest to understand on piano technique. Better yet, find them an excellent Russian teacher. There must be some in Germany.

The technique is so bad. If it isn't corrected, they will suffer from debilitating injuries later on and will not be able to do much on the piano at all. Ergonomics 101. I'm not a huge believer in Taubman, but they have a lot of things right, specifically some basic physiological principles. Avoiding dual muscular pull or co-contraction of muscles (which is being demonstrated in this video to a scary degree), the curling in of the distal finger joints with the collapsing in of the main knuckles, pulling both the extrinsic extensor and flexor muscles tight across the wrist. I hope they are able to find a decent teacher who can help them achieve what they love.

I’m sure the mother is providing the best she can afford but don’t forget she is now reduced to no income. She can’t work because she homeschools them and spends her days running them everywhere. All of you have made great suggestions but the fact is the woman’s husband died suddenly and prematurely. The only help she gets is from the boys godfather and who knows how long that will last. He could run into hard times and not be able to support them. Maddox stands a chance of improving to a higher level, but at this point Carnegie Hall could possibly be unrealistic simply because of the mom’s reduced financial situation. The brother I’m not so sure about. But regardless the boys have been deeply affected by his death last year obviously and that may be a hindrance to them as well. I noticed there’s no mention about grief counseling. People always say things like children are resilient which is the most asinine thing I’ve ever heard. If traumatic events throw adults into a downward spiral what makes them think kids will fare any better? It seems their only therapy is their music because you can feel the grief and sorrow coming from them.

If you want to hear a "prodigy" listen to Alexandra Dovgan or Eva Gevorgyan. There are many others, but none of them are prodigies for long - soon they become musicians - since we're all only 10 years old for a year. These two, however, are really remarkable. Dovgan especially, has such a grace, modesty, and purity along with a gargantuan talent. It's rare to see such a thing. She's unique in many ways. Gevorgyan is a monster at the piano. She plays a lot of Liszt so the snobs of classical music dismiss her - but they do so at their own peril. Liszt's music is as great as anyone's - much of it deeply profound and astonishing. The fact that he was a showman does not change that fact. Gevorgyan's Liszt is fabulous. She's just fabulous - Ravel, Rachmaninoff - it doesn't matter.

@Giverny I think I understand your point now. The truth is that we are living a culture of immediate results. Immediate success, this need to call attention, to be called outstanding, people seem to get more amazed by a headline than what they are really listening to or watching. Most people will just “buy it”. Good musicians don’t need this kind of advertisement. Even kids, it’s not fair to them to be over exposed when they’re clearly not ready.

I mean, he still has small hands so the dexterity falls just a little bit when he plays such quick pieces, but he already has quite a nice sound, and I expect his ability to phrase will certainly improve with time as well. As far as I understood it, the caption pointed out expanses for lessons and traveling are in the four-digit range. Compare that to: music lessons at a German music school for kids that age usually range from 50 to 120 €/ month/ kid/ instrunment. So, that would make about 300 €/ months at most for just 45 mins of music lessons for each kid, if they were taught at a regular music school!

Maddox has real gifted talent, and could become a great pianist in twelve years. Miles playying is good, but nothing special , even given his age. Is the pressure to keep up with his big, talented brother a good thing? Who knows?

@Lourens G between school-system, vaccinations, traditions that must be followed, we are crushed and must be crushed. We are supposed to become good employees. This child got a piano and found his way with it, he practices 3h/day. I tried this and my parents said, I have to do first my houseworks at perfection and must sleep enough to be fit for the school. Result: max 1h. So I had to skip school so I could practice piano (but then 9h/day :-D ). Non, rien de rien, non, je ne regrette rien.

To any professional, it’s very obvious: this boy is a passionate and avid player but no prodigy. There is no sign of musically sensible phrasing or any phrasing at all (it’s just playing the notes uniformly); the hand and fingers’ position isn’t established quite correctly, especially in the left hand; the finger agility is emerging, but the tone isn’t consistent throughout, etc. There are thousands of players like him, yet it takes a special skill and predisposition to be called a prodigy. Wishing this child many great explorations ahead. Impressive results, yet once again, too far from being called a prodigy.

Zeit, Geld und Nerven, alle kostet. I would think the Audience should also be at the same age group, not like the old generation take advantage(ein Vorteil) of the young. Why young people always have to proof themselves to the old, cross culture, Trans culture to me is OK, but cross generation, young kids have to make a living at a such early age, is just critical. Just imagine kids are not playing with each other whether in school or in their Freizeit, the old generations are taking advantage of other weak ethnical group kids, and then benefit their own local, relative, the same Beruf group kids. Then some people would be always losing out, the others are always going to be beneficial. In a Long-Term, that will cause another social inequity. When kids and adults are going to share their own idea, knowledge, creativity with others, it should be fair and based on freiwillig. It must be a free of choice. If they don’t want, you can’t force them to do so. We also need to protect intellectual property, although it’s invisible. So young people would have more incentives to create more new ideas.

"child prodigies" always worry me. How much do they really choose. Even Yehudi Menuhin reported that his grandmother used to lock him in the room to practice for up to 8 hours a day. A few years ago a girl hailed as a maths genius managed to run away from university and initially hid from her father. Loving parents can sometimes be blinded by their own ambitions as to what is good fir their child. How many 8 year old children would want to be sitting at a piano for the best part of their day? You dint get this level of skill from an hour a day of practice.
