This is a result of deforestation. Does anyone remember in the eightys that maggascar was synonymous with extreme deforestation? Actions have major consequences in an already bad situation.

Yes I agree with this Mò Zi. The people of brazil should take this as an example of what happens when you recklessly deforest huge areas for a few years of farming and fuel for the furnace. And the people of madagascar should try some permaculture and reforestation.
@melisboregard

Oh, wait. They allready took up all the reasons why madagascar is in this sorry state in the video. I should have watched the whole thing before i started commenting. But they should really try to find ways to collect the rainwater when it comes. Or else it will just sweep away the soil in the process. Boring new wells is not really a solution. Just look at California. Not really a sustainable concept going on over there..

One of the best documentaries I watched on such an important issue. From Australia. DW gets the best topics that need everyone's attention. Interviewing local people and the challenges they face was very well captured. Thank you so much, DW. You are awakening us to be mindful of our actions in our daily life. How every effort of change matters and how it impacts others somewhere else.

Nature takes care of itself; humans are the problem. I have seen at least a third of all food production buried on large farms, in the USA alone. I have seen it in Africa and Europe, and Asia. I have seen thousands of acres of land deforested in Africa to sell lumber to China, it is still going on, supermarkets hotels, food outlets, etc dump thousands, and thousands of pounds of food weekly. this includes other countries. I worked on a large farm for a while and saw all this, if all that food was put on the market the prices would be peanuts for the owners. I was in Cambodia where hundreds of families were self sufficient, living by the sea, and off the land for hundreds of years, the government tricked them and confiscated the land. Know what is growing there now? A five star hotel. Over fishing of the oceans for profit for the rich. Hundreds of miles of golf courses in the USA alone. Billions spent to create wars and weaponry. Believe me, there is more than enough for everyone, but the rich takes more than their share. So few with so much, so many with nothing

Being Malagasy, I wish I could do something to help my own compatriots. This could be avoided but the government does not want to get the situation solved as they are taking advantage of the crisis by being attributed international financial help. We have rain all along the year in the East and the project of pulling out water from the near region has been set in place for at least a decade ago, but so far it still remains a dream. Recently, a student had an idea of sea desalination. He even came to build a homemade machine, something that needs to be supported but we did not hear a word from the authority. More probably he was told to stop or I don't know. This is a shame!

In Madagascar do you believe In The Most High YAH??. You use all the things He has made, but do you ever thank Him for what He has given. Do you allow for The Sabbath day of rest. Do you allow the Land to rest in the 7th year. Do you observe a Jubilee Year. Why have you not yet gotten piped water to your homes, or wells drilled in Your Land to bring water 💦 to the People??? Have a National Day of prayer where you each confess your sins on your knees before The Messiah, Read Psalms 51: 1 and pray it as a prayer. Thank The Most High YAH for all He has given and pray for rain 🌧️☔. If any of you believe this and keep up the prayers Yah will send rain 🌧️☔ regularly. you cannot just live in YAH'S world 🌍 using up all His Blessings everyday without thanking Him. Are you all pagans... If you cannot Praise Yah and thank Him daily you will all die off for failure to acknowledge The Creator of The Universe and all your Land that you have lived on for years without Thanksgiving... It was so crowded when they slept beside eachother they all had to be on the same side and someone would stay up and call out every couple of hours for everyone to turn over to the other side because that's the only way they could fit stacked like sardines. It's just that our government is so corrupted. They only care about themselves and just pretend "to help" the population. It's really difficult to get Madagascar out of poverty because our system education is out of date but still expensive so most people can't afford school and it leads to them not thinking properly, destroying our environment to only be the victim of their consequences later on. It's really sad and pathetic to know that there's a link between all of that but the majority isn't really aware

The lack of rainfall in southern Madagascar has nothing to do with climate change, but is caused by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Just read Grove et al (2013): “Madagascar corals reveal a multidecadal signature of rainfall and river runoff since 1708”. They've shown the sea surface temperature (SST) of the Great Ocean and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) influence the amount of rainfall over the years. This is comparable to the El Niño Southern Oscillation (Leupold et al 2021).

@finest shrestha If you would actually read the scientific paper by Grove et al I referred to, you would know the effect of PDO is cyclical, and every cycle takes about 60-70 years. People talked about climate change a lot these days but no one has talked about the world population growth. Is there any connection between these miseries and uncontrolled human population growth? On this planet only human population is not controlled rather than other creatures which population are controlled by human wants! Take the population ballance of cows and sheep used to be in the invisible hands. But now their population grow with the human population growth. Surely human behaviours significantly impact on the environment they rely upon for surviving. While taking about climate change, human population growth problems cannot be ignored.

No, climate change and other environmental problems aren’t chiefly caused by overpopulation, it has always been greed. The richest 1% of the population emit twice more than the poorest 50%, the top 100 companies account for 70%+ of all emmissions etc etc. Make no mistake, environmental degradation is and has always been caused by developped countries.

If the area used to have a lot of rain, there is likely to be aquifers under the dry land. Doesn't anyone in Madagascar have the simple technology to drill wells? Also, besides the edible cactus fruit the cactus is also edible. Mexicans call it "nopalitos". The "leaves" are scraped of the spines and chopped up and cooked.

Sorry but this has to be one of the most western comments I’ve seen… I guess if they had the simple technology or the means to drill a well they would have done it already. They’re not dumb. And let’s say there are aquifers that can be tapped into… those will only hold as long as they’re refilled by rain that seeps in the ground and the groundwater will take it down to the aquifer. Otherwise it’s just a sort of happy hour for water till it dries up 😢

As someone who's grown up in a poor village, I highly doubt they have the technology to do this. They don't have the machines, the pumps, or the pipes to get the water out. They seem to be much poorer than the village I was from. I hope relief comes to the children and the people soon.

@Azuri e have you actually had to dig a well? How would you go about looking for where the aquifers are located? In a tropical place it’s easy because you can spot it, but what about in a dessert? Do you know how deep you’d have to go to dig a well and the tools you’ll need? It’s def not impossible. They’ll need a lot of rope and they can also dig woth their hands if they’re desperate enough. But imagine how hard it will be digging hard soil. Especially when you barely have any energy due to lack of food and water.

One oddity about countries like Madagascar is that the water shortage has been an issue for years, yet they continue to have children at a phenomenal rate - 3.9 per woman. This ranks them as 36th out of 193 nations. It is not fair to the children to bring them up in an area where it would be difficult to even raise one child. I realize this is an entirely different issue, but I wonder if the families give that any thought?

I spent some time in Madagascar a few years ago, after travelling to many different countries all around the world it was by far the worst country ive ever experienced, the locals had renamed it from the The Green Island as it was so lush, to now the Red Island as it is now destroyed and a wasteland... With zero guidance / plan they bred like crazy and consumed everything in there path, every tree etc has been cut down... With no power/etc throughout most the country they relayed on fire to survive, and as the guide told us without anything to do they just have more and more kids... I cannot explain the amount of children there, over 70% of the population are young kids with nothing.... Absolutely blew me away, and still does... People now cry of being controlled by the Governments in lucky western societies, but if you want to see what humanity will do with no government book a flight to Madagascar and see for yourselves what people can/will do.... They are lovely people, with a country that had so much potential... With fertile dark volcanic soils, great rainfall and climate they could have had it all, but have sadly over run it ... Apparently alot moved into the cities trying for a better life the guide told us, but instead found it even harder to compete there....The slums in the major city was next level. I hope somehow they can turn it around, it has spiraled so far out of control now it will take decades to get the balance back in check.... They have such a unique part of the world with great people, wildlife and a beautiful amazing country ... When i left there all i could think was they had no guidance and no plan, just fighting to survive ..... I wish them and there country all the best

Sounds like a combination of deforestation and cultural issues (multiple wives-20 to 30 kids??!!??). Many things must change and people must be educated AND take responsibility!!! Sometimes your culture/behaviors need to change. For example, in California there were anti-smoking/anti-littering campaigns so by the time my gen came to the teenage-years recycling was the norm and smoking was quite rare. (I am NOT referring to the current “regime” there-different story. Things can go TOO far, you know.)
@nsubugajoseph7471
@nsubugajoseph7471 2 жыл бұрын
I agree about the education but not much else they're being as responsible as they can possibly be in their circumstances. Irresponsibility means death from thirst or starvation. They have lived like this in their large families for a very long time until the environment changed. So as you go ahead to blame their way of life, remember you the Americans defend your way of life to the death of any perceived challenge to it whether it's real or imaginary. e.g in Iraq, With disproportionate force and atrocities. Impunity that you are not held accountable for because you have accumulated so much economic wealth by burning fossil fuels for energy. Affecting the entire planet which includes Madagascar.
@jukesd1597
@jukesd1597 2 жыл бұрын
@@nsubugajoseph7471 Indeed, but just because you (your society) have lived a certain way doesn't mean things can't change as we learn and grow as people and a society. For example, before my generation, people didn't know about the dangers of smoking. Greater awareness changed behaviors which changed society. (Healthier) My great grand-parent's generation had many children (generally) which led to greater poverty/sickness and more chilhood deaths. Greatee development in/access to healthcare, better living standards & access to education led to fewer children (2-3) from the 50's onward. These blessings also led to longer lifespans. (In general). So yes, education is key but a society must be willibg to adapt and change (learn) or it WILL NOT improve. The situation will continue to deteriorate. That is a sad truth.
@nsubugajoseph7471
@nsubugajoseph7471 2 жыл бұрын
@Jukes D you are right people can change and they do inevitably change but the fact that the changes they have made in the past have not led them to a similar situation to yours doesn't undermine the crisis they are in. The changes you are talking about are the result of solutions to the problems highlighted by the documentary. Starving kids can not learn before they are fed. The societal changes happen very gradually, when forced or rushed there is push back, strife and sometimes conflict. Like the smoking example I don't think they stopped medical care for smokers neither did they make smoking illegal overnight. These things take time and it's important to understand and respect these people simply because they are humans and have done nothing wrong other than living the only way they know.

Pretty simple, the situation is so fragile that many kids die before becoming adult. Also the people barely have food or place to stay, no one has time, money or interest in birth control. Their days are wasted looking for food and water. They don't have the time for education and they have no idea about the bad effects of having so many children. And at the end of it all there's the notion that more hands mean more work and more money.

@@milesinnz I was just merely stating facts. People without proper education cannot realize the bigger picture. It seems obvious to us cause we're exposed to thousands of information and statistics which never reached these people. If you look at history you'll find that population explosion is a common thing during or after famine. Also human body becomes biologically more fertile during famine in an attempt to ensure the survival of its genetic lineage. This evolutionary trait is present in most complex life forms of earth. No one knows how many child will survive. There are families where 5 out of their eight children died. Other families who saw that wanted to make sure they had some children. So maybe that had ten children none of which died. Thus population grow. It is not BS, rather it is proven fact supported by research. Almost every country tracks child mortality rate cause when less children die it is easier to control the population. Sounds counterintuitive but it's the reality.

@@guidosillaste4297 I think the population increase comes from a micro level... individuals bound up in illogical cultures and religions... and of course they then cry for the food aid because they cannot produce enough of their own...

@@milesinnz If the culture and religion were the cause then london would not be overpopulated neither would any of the mayor citys ,but all of them are overpopulated to the point that if trucks stop coming .... well then its bye bye for half the population. And none of them cried for food. UN force feed the idea to developed natins that we need to intervene and as we have time to be all emotional we give whitout thinking of the damage we cause to developing nations. And large NGOs marget themselfs as the solution while pocketing 99% of funds. PROFIT OVER LIFE THATS PEOPLES MOTTO IN THIS AGE.

@@guidosillaste4297 ah... it is IMMIGRATION that has created the problem in London.. same as Australia.. but we are not supposed to mention the "I" word for fear of upsetting the religious nutters. In the last few decades in Australia, the population has gone up by 25%... IMMIGRATION.. in NZ, the population has doubled.. IMMIGRATION.. all from desperate places where there are population explosions as a result of religion and culture... if none of these people cry for food, then why the hell do those that can leave these countries, risk their lives to become illegal immigrants in countries where they are not wanted... I guess you are so ignorant you wont know that most, if not all Africa countries are also members of the UN - are you this ignorant.. so try pointing the blame at other African countries.. there is plenty more I can say, but people like you just wet themselves and run for the exit.. it's hardly worth replying to the ignorant.. but then, maybe I am wrong.. please show me I am wrong.. or are you already running ?

China is the largest emitter of carbon dioxide gas and India is right up there also. So don't blame it all on the western lifestyle.
@flytoheights1
@flytoheights1 2 жыл бұрын
That’s misleading. North America is the biggest emitter per capita (person) basis. Corporations and billionaire lifestyle with jets emits more carbon dioxide than anyone else. If you look at per person basis than billionaire lifestyle emits the most, then millionaire, then middle class lifestyle, then poor. It depends on how many houses, cars, jets, food habits, etc. Also, corporations emit the most out of all.

@@flytoheights1 You have to wonder what these regions are importing, food, medicine, industrial products, the third world has some claim to these fossil fuel emissions because of this, the emissions are also the only reason Africa and the middle east can even feed it's population with industrial agriculture.
