Pau was the best European player in his prime ( i dont include Nowitzki because on national teams the German didnt do a lot) even the USA team respected that fact. Rasheed Wallace who was around Ben's age had a well known history of guarding Dwight effectively, the Pistons even beat the Magic 3-0 that season and that was when they were no longer a contending team.
