An artificially created division, based on race is the reason the country is so divided. To make it simpler, we are who we are because of our parents education, jobs, and exposure. @@lu544 Corruption is all relative, the American and Chinese CCP are levels above more corrupt than the southafrican government could ever be yet their economies are resilient and developing. What we are dealing with is an artificially created cycle of poverty and a class of people based on their demographics. Education is a must, but that alone can't do much. Most people don't want the land, they want to own it because they incorrectly believe that if you have land you are rich - whilst Limpopo and Natal are very fertile much of the Cape and the Free State are arid and the land itself does not command a large premium upon sale.

@Nandadulal Das Well, at least you could give it a try. If the average African can circumvent the power structures of national leaders, they become more powerful. The European continent still has a lot of corruption and inequality these days and things are getting worse. However, transcontinental trade is preventing these things from getting unbearable. Colonialism isn't the main thing what made the Europeans rich. Trade is (both with equal and unequal trading partners).

The fact that a third of the population is on welfare speaks volume on the success of the country in redistributing wealth. If valuable goods and services were not produced by skilled people, how would have there been money to redistribute? If no one produced skilled products, there was no value to redistribute. SA must encourage this growth and provide the safe environment for people of all backgrounds to become skilled and participate in value creation.

" success of the country in redistributing wealth" ??? I think you mean "the potential the country used to have". They were the richest country in Africa, which is why the welfare system can still hold for a while. But they have failed to redistribute the wealth leading to inequality

They were the richest country in Africa when white people were in charge lol. White Europeans built the entire country. When it was stripped from them, it began returning to what it was before Europeans arrived-- a primitive hellhole. You can only "redistribute" wealth so much, you also have to build wealth. Something "native" Africans seem incapable of. @@TheModeler99

Wow, As a Kenyan, I never thought a South African could ever say, "learn from the Kenyans", because our politics & corruption make my heart hurt. It must be very bad (politically) in S.A for him to make that statement. I hope the younger generation of African leaders can help us be more forward thinkers, and not just worry about "our own" because that is what breeds greed and corruption.

The context of his comment was "liberating SA from the liberators of SA" just like Kenya has done. Yes, Kenya's politics is still tribal and corruption is rife. However, Kenya has been ruled by 5 different political parties since independence. SA has only been ruled by one party that is still led by the "old liberators" of SA and their cronies. New brooms sweep clean kinda thing. You don't expect new radical ideas from the old guard. They are addicted to the status quo that continues to fatten them. Kenya has had a new constitution, stronger expanded parliament (better representation), stronger independent judiciary, devolved county govt units, huduma centers, CDF, women representatives, local government funds, independent electoral body and some improved transparency in elections, corruption is called out more often without consequences to the whistle blower unlike KANU days ... All these are baby steps Kenya is making towards a brighter future. All these reforms were made possible because Kenyans liberated themselves from the liberators (KANU). Or maybe my understanding of his comment was totally wrong. Or then maybe I understood him correctly.

Population in SA increased by 23,000,000 between 1990 and 2020.Would like to know any country that started in last place then added 23 million new citizens requiring food water clothing healthcare housing education electricity jobs. We foolishly dance around this reality choosing instead to blame blame blame individuals, just read the atrocious comments to see this happening. SA is a harbinger of where we're headed globally. Globally 80 million net new precious humans join us every year. That's 10 New York Cities of infrastructure etc. that must be built EVERY YEAR. Today we're at 8 billion humans, another 13 years and it will be 9 billion. Yet it's the same planet that only 120 yrs ago had 1 billion humans. If we do not address this in an intelligent coordinated humane global manner all will surely be lost...

When you get rid of property right and have confiscation you might reduce people’s motivation to increase their economic activity- since it can be taken away by fiat. Doesn’t looting (a rather more earthy form of confiscation) show that businesses can’t cope with paying bills and surviving if their stock is taken without payment. Removing wealth by confiscation is radical - but not sure there are many examples of it resulting in a situation that anyone wants to see. Any argument that this would be a one off will only sit well with those that have the assets after the confiscation- the don’t haves will then seek another and another ‘redistribution’.

27 years is long, for example West Germany rose from total ruins (after WWII) to economic super power again in just 20 years. Obviously this cannot work if the positions of power are too often held by people who lack the required capacity or integrity. Every day there is a new story about taxpayer money going down the drain in some new case of tender corruption. And the municipial managers who are supposed to oversee the infrastructure projects are usually in cahoots with the contractors who fail to perform their duties. They put the money in their pockets, but don't deliver in return, it's a popular corruption scheme. So, a lot of the money that could be used to help improve the infrastructure and living conditions actually disappears. As long as political offices are held by unqualified people who are only seeking these offices to benefit personally from tender deals (many of these office holders would not even get a job in the regular job market, due to lack of qualifications and expertise), nothing will change. The ongoing fractional battles within the ruling ANC don't help either to focus on the urgent projects. ANC decisionmakers must eventually understand that they have to put the interest of the society first (as was the case when the ANC was a liberation movement, where some members literally sacrificed their lives in order to overcome apartheid and reach a democratic dispensation). If not they will ruin the economy until there are no public funds left to loot. The most potent taxpayers are already leaving in the millions to overseas and the tax revenue is going down every month.
