in the north African country Tunisia, where authorities have intensified an operation to intercept migrants who are planning to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean sea.
The Tunisian National Guard says it has arrested smugglers and stopped more than two-thousand people in its coastal cities, most people have been held back in the city of Sfax. Tunisia has become a key launching pad and the crackdown comes after a record number of crossings to Europe. DW's Christine Mhundwa just returned from a reporting trip in Italy where the migrants are arriving. She spoke to some of them and saw for herself what the situation on the ground has been.

Main reason is Africa has no navigable river systems so they never established significant trading networks, meaning no technological exchange aka advancement which left them in a perpetual agrarian state. As cruel as it sounds I think there’s some truth here. I lived and worked in the Middle East where I noticed a high incidence of disability, mental health issues and birth defects. The problem is, there is a viable number of African governments which are so disorganized, corrupt, tribalistic, dictatorial and believe in intimidating, fighting and oppressing of those who seem to disagree with their governance which leads to the poor performance of their economies, poor infrastructure and increased lawlessness leading to a lot of insecurity. This pushes its young population into immigration as the only viable solution to the future. Maybe EU should look into this and stop funding those governments or set strict rules and set follow-ups to whoever gets the funding to make sure the money does what it was intended to do.

Europe is generous but it has a limit and it seems that limit has been reached. Only grant visas to skilled workers, genuine students and to people who’s country has been totally destroyed by war. Do not risk your life crossing in those welded metal boats only to find misery in Europe. Going by the age of all those men and some women, assimilating into European culture will be very difficult so life will probably be even worse in the long term.
