As someone from the USA I have unique pride in Jimmy Carter. Although he may not have been the most effective President (largely due to the circumstances of his time in office rather than a lack of competence) he was truly a GREAT man. He should be remembered as a symbol of the decency that every US politician should aspire to!

People prefer a bad person who has a more effective policy than a decent person with less effective policy. People prefer hawks over doves, as this comment section shows, but I would choose a dove over a hawk any day of the week. Rest in peace, sir.

When Ted Kennedy ran against Carter, it was over. These were tough inflationary, gas outage, hostage, times here. As a Democrat, I voted for Reagan because of Carter's incompetence. Kennedy should have taken the primary.

He handled the Iran hostage situation with best intentions. The helicopter crash was bad luck, but the real problem was the Reagan campaign made a covert secret agreement with Iran for releasing frozen Bank assets and supplying Iran with arms, guns, military equipment, if Iran would hold off releasing hostages until after Regan won the presidency. A quid pro quo

Can agree. Some kings have been good and it cost them. King Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, the brother of the well-known Napoleon was an ethical one. Loved by his people. He didn't even know the dutch language of Holland when he was starting his rule. His reign last that long. He was supposed to be the puppet king of Napoleon and refused to send troops for Napoleon. So he was exiled. Snuck back in with a disguise and people who recognized him cheered for him. But that got him kicked out again. Napoleon commented: ″Brother, when they say of some king or other that he is good, it means that he has failed in his rule.″
