This is nightmare. When we received the emergency alert from 112 alert, we were still at work most of us. I was at work,and immediately took the car to return home. But most of the towns and villages were flooded. Weather forecast were advertising this phenomenon since October 26th. Regional authorities ignored the expert's advice and the danger of it. And, of course, we have bills to pay, families to maintain, and most were forced to go to work. We want political responsibilities for all these deaths (and more and more to come). Another thing we can't understand: in the majority of places, the help from the government arrived THREE DAYS LATER!!!!! Imagine the situation with no water, no food, no electricity, and dead bodies on the mod, under the cars and garages. This mustn't happened in a European country like mine. We have the resources to save life's. What we know as Valencian people is that when we need help, we stay strong together as a strong nation, the poole save the people!!!We are completely devastated. My condolences to all the family with death victims. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

We live in Valencia, only a few miles from some of the towns you're seeing in the news. There is an aspect of this disaster that's not mentioned, which is that after the previous catastrophic floods in 1957, the Turia River was redirected to flow south of the city, into an artificial channel built for the purpose. When Tuesday's flood waters came, they overflowed that channel and inundated the surrounding areas. You can see it via Google Maps. That said, this was rainfall not seen here in more than a century, so it was obviously beyond the scope of the planning 60 years ago.
@pilarmolina895824 күн бұрын
Menos mal que el cauce del río se desvió de la ciudad 11 km y se hicieron presas de contención en los afluentes, de lo contrario hoy Valencia no existiría. Infórmate bien por favor, gracias. No es el río Turia el que se ha desbordado.
@orzotubephi932824 күн бұрын
This is incorrect. That Turia's artificial channel was NOT overflowed. Some other natural waterbeds were overflooded, but not the artifical one built after 1957. That's why most of the city north of the channel was saved.

El gobierno regional no declaró la alerta roja porque eso lo dejaba como ineficaz ante el gobierno central ( son de partidos opuestos) y el gobierno central ha dejado que esto pase para mostrar la ineficacia del regional. The warnings were sounded many years ago in 1957 and from what I read, Valencia has always been very prone to flooding. The silliest thing to do would be to rebuild demolished buildings (p.s. possibly .... perhaps residents were SAFE in their apartments?) - they rerouted the river away from the city centre, did they just rebuild housing again around the banks of the new river? is that where they put the motorway?? The university inspired universally chanted mantra 'climate-change' isn't the half of it - rebuilding in-situ would be like building houses on Mount Vesuvius or straddling the San Andreas fault only more likely to be destroyed.
@h5mind37324 күн бұрын
Coincidentally and tragically, most of the flooded areas are bordering the channel where the Turia River was redirected back in the 1960s. You can see it on Google Maps. Prior to 1957, the Turia ran through the middle of the city.
@MrVorpalsword24 күн бұрын
@@h5mind373 Yes, I know, I did look at the maps - it seems obvious in HINDSIGHT that running the motorways either side of the new river was a mistake. It has not much to do with climate change. There is a long, long history of floods alone the centuries in many areas in Spain. For instance in 1954 this area had such a terrible flood that General Franco made to build up a “presa” and “pantanos” not only in this area but all over Spain to prevent disasters. And also using afterwards those stored waters for producing electricity, horticulture lands...however, for not clear practical reasons all those presas and pántanos were gradually dismantle with dramatic consequences. Another cause for provoking disaster flood might have to do for stopping to do the cleaning in riversides. Another cause was to built houses in areas well notoriously known by their floods.

I live in the USA, at one time, there were floods so quickly that huge canyons were formed which left beautiful rock cliffs now! The woman had some great ideas of how the community can learn what to do that could help save lives. I also feel like I want to massage the man's eyebrows that look painfully furled above his nose!

Indeed, a very good point regarding the end of ice age floods. It does seem to me that either we should build extremely fortified buildings as our homes near coastal areas or move inland. Granted, other extreme weather phenomena like tornadoes, giant hail and others are on the rise as well, so probably fortified buildings and other civil engineering solutions are our best bet. Considering how much work and $ all of that will cost, I can only conclude that there will soon be a less demand for owning a property and renting will start to look like a better deal.

@@whatsupbudbud I agree about the fortifying, but not about the renting.

Is it true that the spanish govermnent rejected help by France which offered thousands of soldiers to deal with search for those people who now have, as was said, "a very slim chance to survive"? Maybe if you didn't reject professionals who would speed up the search and had bigger reach, lives could be saved? Could anyone explain logic behind this act?

Hi, I live in Valencia, maybe I can help. It started in the morning. Our warning came at 8pm on our phones. We went to work as usual. I was only sent home because the companies started seeing videos of other areas where the storm was hitting on social media. There are way more ordinary citizens helping than authorities. They need food (that doesn’t need to be cooked) and water, blankets… thank you for thinking of Valencia ❤

America and Europe is busy supporting wars in Ukraine and Israel. Business houses are busy in making money at any cost. Noone is bothered about climate change. All the politicians do party on the name climate change going for g7, brics etc. Suffers are the common people. I believe all the commoners should come together against wars and the politicians not taking it seriously as only poor and common people are worst affected

I think this needs to be investigated and resolved on EU level. Why such short warning?

" People need to know that the myth of Sisyphus describes also climate events" In the USA, the Atlantic hurricane season officially started on June 1. The season will remain active through Nov. 30. Allegedly, more likely apparent failure of the EU = European Union in the 21. century. Einstein once said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

I live in the original path of this storm but fortunately it veered away and we caught the edge of it. We were warned days before of the path and the strength. The trouble is the Spanish way is to be warned by text but i was checking the internet. We are 2 hours southwest from Valencia and we knew what was coming. Another thing a lot of people around the world might not know, in towns and cities in Spain parking is a lot of times underground and it would be the last place, as a Brit used to rain, the basement would be the last place i would run to as being flooded. Plus so much concrete everywhere and not many back gardens to soak up the rain.

I experienced ONDOY here in the Philippines. Our floodgates have automatic alarms that let us know how high the water at the floodway is. The alarms ring for every meter the water rises. The alarms went off, one after the other too fast. The water was rising too fast, we did not have time to evacuate. 3 months worth of rain fell in a few hours. I can not imagine the devastation of 1 year's worth of rain... Our prayers are with the people of Spain. 🙏😔

Now, we use Rainfall Warnings. It tells us how much water the rain clouds have. Our weather forecasts have Rainfall Warnings. This way, we can prepare 2 or 3 days ahead.

I was in Malaga during this storm; it was a freak occurrence with a stationary storm front over us; the Aemet meteorological forecast is normally super reliable in predicting our usual storms but this one was different. A large stationary storm that erupted locally and randomly it was clear the usual prediction models were not working.

@@laurensa.1803 You probably don't know what 2000 m/s looks like in reality. For this flow you would need a profile 300 metres wide and 7 metres deep. That's a bigger structure than the riverbed in LA that appears in the movies.

So they are admitting that they were informed that a major storm was coming to their area. They disregarded it. Now they’re saying there was a communication issue. What more were they expecting? A brownie? Perhaps you should take heed to the first warning. Same thing happens here in America every single year. They warn people that a storm is coming and they should evacuate or take proper precautions and the people think they know better than the experts.

Those are full of fear and seeking for easy explanation that relieves their inner doubt they still could be in fact responsible in one way or another because warnings are out there since decades. It is painful to admit one could be responsible in which way ever for such big things happening right now and probably much more bigger in the future.
