After a comment from a viewer we'd like to clarify that for the sake of simplification our definition of algae includes photoautotrophic organisms like cyanobacteria. There are, however, attempts to develop a new definition of what the term "algae" actually means. Here's for a example an initiative, led by a plant-professor from the University of Cambridge, to change the nomenclature: www.what-are-algae.com/

35 years ago, a fellow gardener (UK) told me he used seaweed on his allotment as his sole fertiliser. Collected it in bulk in his truck, washed it, dried it, dug it in or used it as a mulch around perennial crops. Excellent vegetables. Whenever I go to the beach, if there's an excess of seaweed left high and dry on the shore, I do the same. It is good and I'm not surprised the UK has already started seeing a use for the Sargasson Algae. As I am some distance from the beach and don't go there as often as I'd like, I have started using types of pondweed in the same way. If you get a vigorous type, you've got a great source of easily compostable algae to help build soil levels.

Algae plastic could be a game changer because it would not only reduce our emissions but also it would not use forever chemicals that are in pretty much every living being and it would be better for animals if this plastic was to end up in the ocean as opposed to conventional plastics. History has shown that it's often a bad idea to outlaw one thing in favor of another. Take as an example electric vehicles, it sounds like a great idea at first glance, but it turns out that the electric grid (at least in Germany) simply can't handle more than one electric vehicle charging per street. It would be an absolute disaster if the government decided to make them a standard. While algae plastics sounds promising, legislating its use always comes with a risk.

It should definitely NOT be banned at least as long the algae plastic is only in biodegradable version. That's great for some uses (like packaging), but not for others (like construction) which needs to be durable. @sanjaymatsuda4504
@sanjaymatsuda4504 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, perhaps if you buried the algae deep underground or undersea and waited a few million years, the great pressure and geothermal heat would decompose the cell walls and help the hydrocarbons to separate from the water. Later you'd have to pump out the combustible part of the mixture, and the gases generated through the whole process, and you'd burn them for energy.
@spulwasser
@spulwasser 2 жыл бұрын
I think if the algae die and sink to the ground, they will in time form sediment which captures the CO2. A similar thing is happening for mosses in swamps. The carbon gets sequestered for hundreds of years, unless some human comes along and removes the water and the peat, then it will be all released at once🤪

Instead of utilizing sargassum for carbon sequestration by bailing it and sinking it to the ocean floor, I believe that it could be better utilized via the process of hydrothermal carbonization which provides many alternative uses such as displacing fossil fuel in cement cintering as well as being able to use the biochar product to displace sand and cement in concrete for long term sequestration.

Unfortunately, sinking macro algae also removes their precious nutrients. Far better as fertilizer to fight deserts, instead of sinking and sequestering our last phosphorus :/

exactly. These algae blooms in the gulf of mexico should be harvested for their phosphorus content and be used as fertilizer.

Most of the people discussing spirulina online are growing it in a nutrient solution based in sodium bicarbonate, and the spirulina is photosynthesising the carbonate from the solution instead of carbon dioxide from the air. If we want to use it to remove excess carbon dioxide from the air, we need to address that issue.

People rely on fish-processing waste for fish oil for the Omega 3 nutrients, even when overfishing. But fish are at the top of a food chain that collects heavy metals and pest/herbicides. Best to go to where the Omega 3s come from in the first place - clean algae. Capsules at Wal-Mart and elsewhere, way cheaper too

Literally trillions of dollars can be made if you really understand this process, in my opinion. If you could use the excess fertilizers in water to grow food, use beneficial seaweed to feed fish and provide habitat, excellent compost for sale, aquatic tourism, fish and wildlife funding... The list literally goes on and on.

You have missed on a major part of using algae. Some rype of alagae can be used as a source of biofuels. Additionally, when used to clean industrial water, where they are allowed to grow and then used for biofuels, we have solved one of the major issues of biofuels process (water negative). Here as we are cleabing waste water, it can be said to be water nuetral. Similarly, as they suck CO2 while growing in waste water, they can be considered to be carbon nuetral.

Algae if grown too much leads to eutrophication causing depletion of oxygen. This reduced level of oxygen in the ocean affects the aquatic life.

Great documentary! I only have one criticism which is the pronunciation of Jorge Vega Matos' name. I am pretty sure he is Portuguese since he has the PSD symbol in the back (a Portuguese political party). If he is, his name is read similarly to George.
