@@johnterry3312 Yes, they are really german towns. Gramado is a touristic place, very charming, with a bavarian architecture, but its first settlers and main builders were italians. See that the italian immigrants who came to that region in the 19th century were from northern Italy, that belonged to the Austrian Empire and had great german influence. Here everybody moves and mixes, and also the germans that started to come to the Sinos River valley since 1823 left millions of descendants, and many went to the region known as Serra Gaúcha, the mountains that were first occupied by italians. Gramado is one of many cities in the Serra. This is about the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost brazilian state, where I live. I don't know much about the neighbor state of Santa Catarina and its german cities like Pomerode and Blumenau.

Remember that Brazil ranks second, after the US, in the size of the European diaspora. In Brazil, there are cities predominantly populated by immigrants from countries like Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Latvia and Austria. In the South of Brazil, there are several cities whose majority of thw population is either Russian, Polish or Ukrainian descent. As of today, Brazil is home to over 100 million descendants of European immigrants, surpassing the combined total of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Whilst you guys are mostly of Portuguese, Italian, Polish and German descent, we are the descendants of the Tabajara, Tremembe, Potiguara, Portuguese and Angolans. There are many indigenous communities up here, and a lot of African influence as well as Dutch because we were once a Dutch colony. Our weather is around 30C all year round and we are a very dry and coastal region, with lots of mangroves and dunes. Anyway, much admiration from a fellow Brazilian!

@nancyleal25292 ай бұрын
@@djiejsbdiejebs-qn2mj , yes, ancestry. There are also more recent German immigrants, but most people with German last names have more distant ancestors. In some towns in the South, like Blumenau, there is a bigger concentration of people with German ancestors that have married between themselves, so, they have kept more typical German physical characteristics. Descendants who moved to other parts of the country in general mixed with people of different European ancestors (Portuguese, Italians etc.) or other races. So, their descendants nowadays (with German last names) can look quite different compared to Germany (excluding immigrants).
@viniciuskintschner15912 ай бұрын
Yes they truly are welcomed in Brazil even if they want to stay longer, not sure if the opposite is valid, with a south Brazilian who wants to stay longer in Germany.
@nancyleal25292 ай бұрын
@@viniciuskintschner1591 , I belive that Brazilians with German ancestors who speak German wouldn't have problems. But probably other ones, specially without European features, could feel more prejudices. Even in Portugal Brazilians have said that there are prejudices, especiallly against the non-whites. Our media in Brazil highlights especially Europe and North America, so, Europeans in general, not only Germans, are welcome in Brazil because of the more "positive side" shown. But I know that it's not the same for Brazilians abroad, depending on the country. Still there are stereotypes like samba, carnival, football, "exoticism" and negative sides of the country, maybe except in South and Central Americas, Africa and a few ones.

Actually many Jewish last names like Rosenberg, Spielberg, Spilman, etc comes from the Yiddish language, which is technically an old variety of German with influence of Slavic languages like Ukrainian and Russian as well as Semitic languages like Hebrew and Aramaic. This Yiddish language dispite that is a Germanic language, is written with the Hebrew alphabet. If you can ask a native or fluent German speaker, he/she will surely understand this Yiddish language. Forgot to mention, this Yiddish language is spoken specially by ethnic Jewish community called Ashkenazi, which used to live mostly in Western Europe and Central Europe like in Poland, they their population was almost vanished in the WWII. Today most of these communities live in New York, Israel and Argentina.
@Jure-xc4no4 жыл бұрын
ashkenazi jews have no last names of their own. they have adopted german (spielberg, goldstein, zukerberg...) and slavic (abramowitz, manishewitz, wolowitz... witz is pronounced as vich). original jewish lasn names are ben something (ben hur, ben gurion, ben moshe...)

Blumenau is in the state of Santa Catarina, but the state of Rio Grande do Sul is the most Germanic in Brazil, and has the most developed and independent culture. Santa Catarina has an immense desire to be accepted nationally, its population supports football teams in Rio de Janeiro, and they make an immense effort to publicize their ocktober to attract the attention of the rest of the country, it is literally a German carnival, the ocktoberfest Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná are reserved for their German population, including a more developed cultural and musical wealth.
