Dye Your Leather Seat

I'm probably going to try this on a vintage thick leather cafe style motorcycle jacket that I'm getting for a reasonable price. The seller bought it used recently and thinks that it used to be black but now it is, from what I can tell in the pics, like a medium gray color. I'd like to try to dye it a tan or brown, just not sure how it's going to turn out already being a shade of gray.

my seat cover is made of pvc leather will the dye work or will it stain my pants is more important?

trying now on my Harley seat, when I buffed after each coat a ton comes off. it also came out blotchie, on my third coat. Very messy, the dye is worse than water!
