In the early lockdown days I bought some "boiled wool" to make a coat out of and I got magenta, figuring if I hit it with some blue dye I could make it the purple I wanted (the purple they had was not nearly satirated enough and I like a reddish purple over a bluish one) and it turns out it was wool pile on a knitted polyester base, so when I did some tests with the blues and purples I had (RIT dyes leftover from a cotton project), the results were that the wool dyed but the polyester didn't, so I've now got this lovely mottled Barney the Dinosaur purple coat with the occasional peek of magenta and it's such a neat effect, I'm really glad I did it, and your "it dyed the wool but not the silk" comment reminded me of it! I've actually bought several fabrics with an eye to overdyeing, though I think before I do any of the cottons again I might try hunting down some proper fibre-reactive dyes because though I didn't have bleeding problems with the RIT garment I originally dyed purple, it has proven to be not very UV resistant, the inside is still pretty saturated but the outside has faded quite badly after a couple hours a week gardening in it for a summer. I bought a brownish striped wool suiting that looked far more grey when I got it home so I snipped off a sample of it and some other wools I'd bought and did a test with onion skins and omg the results were exactly what I'd hoped for, the cool grey-brown is now a warm rich brown and I can't wait to dye more and start using it! Though when I do make my Victorian Walking Skirt (first intended project) I'll probably make the cotton lining removeable in case I need to re-dye it after a while. Though since cotton doesn't take that dye well at all, I might not need to. Exeriments await! FOR SCIENCE!!!

thanx for all the details, I do a lot of dyeing just for the fun of it and when I am done with the project I throw in old towels, sox and pillow cases to take up the dye. It feels most of the time like I have all new stuff! Living in FL by the end of the day its dry from being out on the line and I love the experimentation.!

This is excellent. Thank you! I was gifted some dark red mohair years ago that has sat in my stash since because it is not my colour! I had never consider just adding dimension or overdying, as you have in other videos. I'm now plotting my sneak attack on said yarn! You're wonderful, Rebecca!

Gorgeous colours! I find mohair dyes really well. I never have problems with felting, in fact I have heard that mohair doesn’t felt due to the structure of the fibre. I made a sweater recently with superwash wool and mohair and even put it in the dryer after wet blocking pulled the sweater out to a huge size, and neither yarn shrank.

Given I just tried to felt something recently.... maybe I'd believe it might not felt.

The added dimension really elevates this yarn to another level. The teal was lovely, sure, but the final color after overdying is stunning!

The PVC pipe niddy noddy? I made it! Here is a super old video where I show it off kzbin.info/www/bejne/epLRhYCnp8erqrM

I followed her instructions many years ago and it is so great, I enjoy using it a lot, like when I frog something, I wrap it on the noddy, spray it with water and hang outside in a tree to dry ... the kinks and bends mostly all come out ready for a new project.
