Coincidentally, I just did this 3 days ago. I needed a ridiculous amount of yarn for a large weaving project (8,000+ yards), and was able to get solid color balls of wool that were basically perfect except for being totally solid and flat color on clearance. So I got 40 balls, 20 bright red and 20 burgundy. I overdyed the burgundy with navy, black, purple, and cherry; and overdyed the red with fuchsia, orange, and purple. I did the dying the ball method, squirting the dye into the balls here and there, for a few reasons. One was laziness, but also I figured the colors would be more random than if I skeined them anyway. The orange, fuchsia, and cherry I had expected to just shift the hue very slightly, I’m not sure if they actually had any effect though, since unlike you I didn’t think to set aside a sample. The effects from the darker colors; navy, black, and purple; was more obvious.

after watching you for years i did my first ever yarn dye last week - and it also was over-dying a commercial colour. funny coincidence to see this post so soon afterwards. (and I love my new tonal purple so much more than the blah blue i mistakenly ordered. )

YAY! I'm so glad that I could help out. This is a huge reason why I try to do overdyeing videos from time to time - to remind everyone that you don't have to start with bare yarn for your dyeing. You can transform almost anything!

It adds so much dimension - and a good reminder to always wash red expecting it to bleed! 😂

I wasn't sure if this would bleed... but it was almost nice to see it happen on a commercial yarn

If it's red, it bleeds! That's my basic assumption, whether I buy it, make it, inherit it, you name it. I expect anything red to bleed. Every once in a great while I'm happily surprised. The black speckles added so much to the re yarn, I wouldn't have thought of doing that. Thanks.

This was a very good reminder that I could overdye the pink-ish red yarn that I have, rather than buying a whole new skein!

Absolutely! you can always over dye (unless it is already black)
