If you want more natural dyes, try walnut hulls. Walnut hulls are a very old (like hundreds of years) solution to making ink for quill pens. You boil the walnut hulls in water and the resulting ink is a sepia-brown color that is very permanent. The longer you let it boil, the darker the ink. But you can also use it to dye clothing and it should work better than cocoa (way better than chocolate drink mix) in adding some light brown tones. Nice part is that it works on synthetic fabrics. Walnut hulls will dye the cotton-nylon ripstop blends that are common today. The tannins in the walnut dye make it a really durable color and if you do it and decide you want it darker or want to touch up an older dye job, just mix up another batch. It doesn't get splotchy. You can even use it to darken leather.

Thanks for showing. I´ve done some dying with RIT Dye and such, good stuff. Once I tried dying a MOLLE pouch with the US Army UCP camo digital pattern with coffee. Just bought cheap instand coffee, used a lot (like a strong coffee) and boiled the pouch approx 30-40 minutes. With big success. Even after washing the pouch in the washing maschine it is fine (and smells like a cup of coffee for a long time😆)

Just a heads up, there is a color of liquid rit dye called Cocoa Brown, I’m wondering if that isn’t what the guy meant, instead of literal cocoa. Also, cocoa isn’t the same as hot chocolateC the latter has sweetener and powdered milk in it.

How does the dye hold up after wash
@musician445 Жыл бұрын
Ya know funny enough i think it still probably gave a pretty similar result. Between the rust water and the cocoa it actually looks pretty awesome. How long did you let everything soak in the dye exactly? It seems like time can matter to a certain degree.

Kinda looks like the Russian digital Flora camo pattern. My question is how will this look with the Navy blue digital patterns? Or Air force tiger stripe?
@____________8384 жыл бұрын
I can’t imagine that the navy blues will work very well unless you use a color that will completely wash it out. But the ABU tiger stripes should work rather well.
@tashaconant51694 жыл бұрын
Blue is going to have to go even darker like black
@DriveCarToBar10 ай бұрын
I can tell you that the USAF ABU tiger stripe pattern turns out great with some brown dye. I have a boonie cap in ABU pattern and I followed the directions on the bottle of dark brown Rit. I didn't leave it in very long as I wasn't looking to darken it much. I live in the desert SW, and I was going for an arid color scheme. I like how it turned out. It darkened the Sage green color and made the tan base look more mottled against the greens. The darker green didn't really change. The short soak time probably kept it from getting a lot darker, but if you were going for a brown dominant color for the woods back east or in the northern states during autumn, I'll be it would look great. If I get another piece of ABU gear, I'm thinking about doing a bleach soak with it first to really lighten the colors before trying to dye it again. And I thought about it at the time, but adding some yellow or amber tones to it would not be the worst idea. Sort of a poor man's Flecktarn. No idea how it would look with greens although I can only imagine it would turn out about the same as UCP seeing as they're pretty similar in their color scheme.

Has anyone done their old uniforms in black? Wondering how it turns out? Looking to do my old ABUs or some OCPs in black for a multicam black look.
@randomboomerang27873 жыл бұрын
I haven't but some of the comments I've seen for dye ratios, using the way to dye them green as seen in most videos, then adding a quarter cup of either a grey variant or a quarter cup of black as a starting point as this will get you closer to od green. But id say add black into the dye until you're satisfied with the color. But starting with that green then the black might give you some of those occasional green splotches in multicam black instead of just all black

So for ACUs, and I have 8oz Rit Apple green dye right here, and instructions say add teaspoon of liquid dish detergent, and then for cotton, add salt, for Nylon, add vinegar.. is that why added both salt and vinegar? My ACU shirt is 50/50 cotton nylon, trousers say 100% ripstop cotton.. NYCO? And if I just use apple green dye, will get darker the longer I leave it?
@BUBBA8083 жыл бұрын
Should be called “dying UCP” because ACU is the cut of the uniform and not the actual pattern

I think if you would have used Cocoa Powder it would have subdued the green even more, as that stuff is pretty rich.. but still a major improvement over ACU👍
