Dying Mall - Beaver Valley Mall in Monaca, Pa. After being in this mall I literally felt my spirits and mood go downhill. The mall was sad, dark, and slowly becoming more and more empty. Who knows how it will be in a year. Sorry about the audio at the 21 to 22 minute mark. A dumb copyright claim was put on the video because of the music I just happened to be playing on the radio while I was talking over it. Stupid.
Check out my friend's video where he was able to go into Sears right before they closed. His name is The Gear Shots and here is a link to his Sears video. • Another Sears Closes I...

Great realistic video Wallie. Rumors are everywhere about the BVM but a reliable source told me that March 2018 there should be improvements and retailers coming-hope so-I counted eighteen spots were closed when I walked all over the mall in July 2017. I worked in the BVM from April 1996 and left on March 26,2017 because I worked at Macy's and that was the day we closed. It was a sad day because most of US enjoyed working there.The mall has always looked dark and depressing. Hoping for wonderful improvements for OUR ONLY MALL IN BEAVER COUNTY. THOSE TAXES HELP TO RUN OUR COUNTY.👍👍👍

Judy McCormick Yes, there were 18 empty stores. I forgot to mention that in the video. The employee at Payless did say the same thing about the rumor although she thought that they should have started work on getting these new retailers in but nothing has been done. She said some were supposed to move in already but they never came. Hopefully improvements do happen and we do these new tenants move in. Hopefully it would bring some life back into this place.

Yeah I mean, Northern Lights is a joke and this is really what's left. I understand about those tax dollars... this state is just so money hungry and greedy who knows what those dollars actually go to anymore. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story. My birthday is March 26 so that's a coincidence you mentioned that date. I've heard from a couple of my friends who also work for Macy's in Robinson that they love their job too. Sounds like a nice place to work. It's a shame they're slowly running out of business.

I moved out here a year ago (from El Paso, Tx). I have to admit this is one of the most emptiest mall I've ever been to! When I first visited the mall, I was in absolute shock how there was barely anybody in the mall and how empty it felt. Kind of had an eerie feeling to it too. I still shop here because its nice being in a mall that's not too packed with people😊

That mall has been dying for years. I worked at the Hampton Inn at Beaver Valley for three years from 2012-2014 an d it was dead then. You know who you can tell a mall is dying when an Ollie's Bargain Outlet moves in big sign the mall is in trouble.

I grew up there. This mall was 1st in Beaver County, I believe mid 70s. I noticed signs of decline when I returned home in 1990s. @Lemasters, we been frequent guests @hampton. We must've started frequent visits around ur last yr or so. (Do u recall Larry fm NY, he looks like Duck Dynasty?). Larry has become good buddies w Bob. The mall has certainly gone thru many changes over the decades. My fav, was Sweet Williams!! Those were the carefree days!

Used to go there on occasion when I lived in the area. Circuit City was in an out parcel building. They would sign you up for an MSN email account and you'd get $400 per to shop in the store. I bought a washer, tv, refrigerator, camera, computer, etc. I had many MSN accounts by then. Then came someone dying after eating at Chi-chi's at that mall. At one time the idea of mall shopping was glorious, until the internet. Pricing to support all that overhead just did the concept in. I'm surprised this mall or any other is still in business. So much more selection on the i-net and you don't have to drive around or walk those long smelly hallways to shop. I get most everything delivered right to my front door (except fresh groceries). I can't remember the last time I even thought about going shopping in a 'store'. These places would make good housing (if divided up into apartments inside) for all the displaced workers who used to work there. Or a shelter in a nuke war. Or maybe they could be used as factories (if we ever started making things in this country again). The parking lot could be used as a race track with the oval around the buildings. Or graffiti artists could use the walls for practice (oh wait, I thing they already do that). If I owned one of those malls I'd bring in a wrecking ball and charge $50 for 10 minutes swinging the ball into the mall walls. I'd say that would pay off handsomely. Then I'd sell all the ruble as 'used building materials'. Then the entire acreage could be sold off in 1/4 acre lots for tract housing developers.

The GearShots No problem, Mike. Thanks for the Sears video. I never saw the inside of it so that was as close as I would get. The lady at Payless said the same thing. She thinks it'll be gone within 5 years. This mall did bring my mood down. For a Saturday afternoon, it felt like a weekday in the slowest quarter of the fiscal year. I worked at Target for 6 years. We got incredibly slow in February and March. This felt like one of those days.

Those Amazon lockers are handy. I live in a townhouse complex, and don't trust having packages sit in the mailbox (which is too small for anything other than a medium bubble mailer) and larger stuff having to sit on the porch if I can't be home to get the mail when it arrives. We have an Amazon locker outside my work (I work at a ShopRite in a Phily suburb) and I use their service literally all the time, as long as it's not a package that won't fit any of their boxes. It's convenient to get out of work at night, pick up my package which has been safely locked up all day, and take it right home. Incidentally, and rather funny enough, the locker has my own name -- Heather. Haha. So I have my stuff sent to MY locker, LOL. Great video! I seriously wish I had the time and means to get out and see all the malls in my area, and beyond, but I do try... I film a few closing stores and photograph malls and stores for the a e s t h e t i c but I don't maintain my flickr page like I really should or upload as much as I would like to. I should just start putting stuff up on the Off The Rack - Retail Memories FB page when I get a few photos, because at least I think the crowd there would give me more feedback or just simply enjoy them, plus I think flickr is a mainly outdated site anymore. Oddly enough, I filmed a closing WAL-MART of all things late last year. Not something you see every day! I also filmed two closing Kmarts, one in my town of Bensalem, PA which is right outside Philly, and another in Feasterville, PA, right down the road from the Bensalem store. Interestingly, the closed Bensalem Kmart is where my ShopRite will be moving into later this year, allowing us to expand. So at least that store won't be demolished. Unlike the Feasterville store, which has already been demolished and a new Giant is going up as we speak. Got some great photos and videos of both before they closed, during their liquidation sales.

It has its ups and downs like any mall but compared to many malls in this day and age with the fluctuating economy, theyre doing really well. Love the videos man! Keep up the fantastic work. Oh btw, I mentioned on your Hills video from Northern lights but that is all now being demolished like actually them clawing away at it. You may want to go back to have a look..

Railroad Rick Boscovs is always packed with the older people here in Beaver County. They have nice things for great prices that aren’t to expensive. Sears and Macy’s we’re going down for a while and had nothing to do with the mall itself in my opinion. The only thing about BVM to me is it’s age and size. Robinson mall drove people away when it opened and when US AIR left Pittsburgh in 2005 it took some business away due to jobs and income lose form the workers who lived in Beaver County. Also Cranberry build up in the 90s and 2000s and Beaver County people went there for better restaurants and shops. So it’s just Competition and other factors that have led to BVM into decline for the last few years.

Great video. I worked there 25 years at the pet store. I might have been in there 3 times since 2005. New owner ran it in the ground. So sad. Sad for the mall too. BVM started going down hill when the steel mills and Westinghouse closed up. Then new owners took over and tried. At one time there was great stores in there Old Navy all the Foot locker stores, Disney store, bath and body, and much much more. Rent was outrageous and never went down. Hope to see you post another video for August 2018.

This mall is still alive. Rural King is in the old Sears, U-Haul is in the old Macy's, JCP, Dick's and Boscov's are still there. Planet Fitness is open. Maybe they were still working on it when you were there. Also, there are bathrooms in each of the anchors, plus Planet Fitness if you have a membership. There are still empty stores and I doubt it will ever see the number of shoppers it used to but the mall is surviving for now. Stuff keeps popping up around the mall too including a healthcare center and offices, housing, hotels, etc. The construction of a nearby Shell cracker plant is definitely helping. This is a nice mall and close by so I hope the owners continue their efforts to keep it going.

Was a HUGE Foot Locker, very deep and wide store. Lots of sales floor compared to an average Foot Locker. I also remember the location layout for the bathroom you used in the food court area. Back then I thought that wad a strange spot for the bathrooms and it still seems just as weird now. I think you even thought as much. Hah!

As to the overhead lights being out, I wonder if they turn on more of them when it gets closer to night and rely on the skylights during the day to save energy. This may be a cost cutting measure due to less income caused by so many vacant stores.

It's sad that not many people enjoy malls anymore. Me and my family go on family trips to the mall sometimes and it's sad that many of the malls are going out of business. Although this is happening, my favorite mall, Destiny USA, in Syracuse, Ny, is going up hill as it has just opened a hotel next to it for vistors and had recently built on a huge expansion that has many stores and is very nice looking.

Peach Thanks! I personally thought the mall could use more lighting. And most importantly, FIX THE FOUNTAINS!!! Nothing was more depressing than the low amount of light and the 3 nonfunctioning fountains out of the 4 the mall has. I know the closed stores being down the amount of light inside the mall but where there weren't sky lights, the mall was dark and gloomy. The camera's light filter didn't really show justice. But believe me, it was gloomy. Sad mall overall.

I don’t care if you don’t like it. That mall has been around for a long time. And even though it’s not as perfect as you expected doesn’t mean it has amazing people and amazing food. I still go to that mall quite a bit. So many childhood memories and the only F.Y.E. I live close to. Hopefully the F.Y.E is still open next time I go and they have Angry Beavers in its entirety. Thst place is probably my only shot to buy the set.

In Tulsa, the Promenade Mall has 3/4 of stores closed with at least 2 anchors that have been closed for a few years. It looks worse than this. However the only other mall, Woodland Hills, looks exactly like this. It's depressing because it's like losing a piece of childhood.

I live in Yorktown Heights, NY. I go to the Jefferson Valley Mall sometimes, and that's actually also a dying mall. The stores in that mall have been closing over the years, and I feel that sometime in the future, the whole entire mall will be abandoned.

For what ever reason the malls on the east coast partly mid west have shut down here on the west coast Califormia they are going strong yet also just like the Kmart stores they are doing well.. Surprised there was a payless store back there they all have shut down out here on the west coast.

Old Timer What's more surprising is that this Payless is still going. It's located right next to another shoe store that is 4 times the size of Payless. The Payless employee said their company filed for bankruptcy and closed a lot of stores down but reemerged from it and will be looking into opening a few new stores in the next year or so.

8:58 i still sometimes go to this mall, but that right there is a place called Potato Planet. I have no clue what it was for, but i know for the couple of years it was out it never did good. Im actually shocked by how many people there still are in the mall. I wouldn't consider it dying, but it isnt doing great. The anchors that closed were places that already weren't doing well in general like macys And a sears.

Like I saw one day at the mall I go to in Madisonville Kentucky. At 10:00 the stores open up and just sit. This was before amazon and eBay. Even though it's thriving,. the mall was still sleeping. It's forty years old now. I remember the first day it opened. You couldn't get within a block to park. Now there are plenty of parking nearby.

sad to see malls are dieing out left and right. Unfortunately though e-commerce is to blame. Always loved just walking around the mall even if I had nothing i was there for in particular. Closest mall to me (Concord mall, Concord IN) reached the point recently of going into a bankruptcy point and figuring out what they are going to do with the property. So many memories from my childhood and will end up being bulldozed

Ah, love hearing about North Hills Village! I've always been curious how much of that exists behind closed doors.... namely, what the hell is occupying the Hills space (which would be behind Burlington). I want to know if any of Hills/Ames still remains back there.
@WallieB26
@WallieB26 6 жыл бұрын
Man In Magenta Wig Nope. After Hills/Ames closed, that was pretty much it for it being an indoor mall. They reconfigured the entire place and it is rocking strong. Next to the Burlington is Target. I actually worked at that Target from 2006-2012. It's 10 minutes from my house.

No, no, what I mean is, i think Hills is still at least partially intact, hidden away. From what I can tell, Burlington is basically just a shell built inside the mall (look at a satellite pic, you can see the shape of the center court still); and it also doesn't go as far back as the Hills entrance would've been. *Something* is still in the chunk of the building with the high roof towards the back.

I went to the Beaver Valley Mall last night [Friday, July 27 2018]. The last time I was at that Mall was about three years ago now. Even at that time the Beaver Valley Mall wasn't doing too badly. Most storefronts were operating and there was life there, just three years ago. Man, that Mall is dying! I was shocked. I never before realized or appreciated just how crucial anchor-stores are to a mall or shopping center. Once Sears and Macy's left, that Mall's days were numbered. Boscov's and JC Penny's aren't enough to sustain the rest of the stores there and the little stores have been closing like its going out of style, one after another. It broke my heart. I'd guess that almost half or more of the store fronts inside Beaver Valley Mall are now vacant. It looks a lot like Century Three Mall did in its last days. We could argue on and on as to causes. There's plenty of blame to go around. I could blame this on Trump, but honestly, what did Obama and the Democrats do to help working people the past eight years? Not much. Most all of the bank-bailout stimulus went to the bankers and stayed there. It never materialized into jobs. And Trump's recent tax cuts didn't create jobs either. Instead, wealthy CEOs just used the tax relief to purchase more stock of the companies they manage, as opposed to investing and creating new jobs. One could claim that malls are dying today, and cite Amazon and online shopping as a cause. But I'd argue that Ross Park Mall with all its luxury stores such as Nordstroms is doing quite well today. Besides, are the residents of Beaver County really spending thousands of dollars on Amazon dot com? They don't have thousands to spend anywhere, whether it is online Internet shopping or at "brick & mortar" local retailers. The real problem is income-inequality. It isn't that the citizens of Beaver County are "lazy" or aren't "entrepreneurial". A lack of good paying jobs is the problem. This isn't about people or individuals; this is a systemic problem that is vastly larger than any demographic or single industry. I'd cite Labor Unions, or lack thereof as one great cause. When that Mall was originally built in 1970, Union membership of many workplaces in Beaver County was high, and thousands would come every weekend and spend money. Wages kept up with productivity then. People had money to spend. That Mall was thriving when Unions were thriving. Now that Unions are all but dead, so is that Mall. My guess is that many, if not most current residents of Beaver County voted for Trump and fear the word "Socialism". Socialism??? Where??? Why is everyone afraid of something that doesn't exist anymore? That's the problem: that there is no socialism anymore. That's why poverty keeps rising and inequality keeps getting worse. But most Americans are too stupid to see the truth. They're blinded by racism, bigotry, xenophobia, sexism, religious belief, culture wars, identity-politics, etc. They've got FoxNews, but they don't have a good paying steady paycheck and a local mall to shop at anymore. They can blame Mexican immigrants, but I don't think I ever saw a single Mexican working at the Beaver Valley Mall in all my fifty years of life going to that mall and shopping there. Mexicans didn't kill that mall. Greedy corporations did, but sending all the jobs away and eliminating jobs and busting up Unions and constantly lowering wages. But FoxNews will never say anything to make its audience angry at corporations and CEOs. It's just tragic, any way you look at it. Seeing Beaver Valley Mall in such a sad state really made me sad inside.

Frog Man well they are building around the mall it’s better than nothing at all or tons of empty buildings. BVM could be a in a lot worse shape. People still go to this mall. Sure it’s not like it used to be for the past couple of decades but its not completely dead.
@frogman4361

Rob, with all due respect, that mall is dying. Half the storefronts are empty and vacant. It's very like the Pittsburgh Mills Mall. You can't even buy a coffee at the BVM today. No Starbucks, no Au Bon Pain, no Panera, no Best Buy, nothing. Don't get me wrong, I grew up in Beaver County, I love that mall. It breaks my heart to see the BVM dying. It's like watching a parent slowly wither away with terminal cancer. But that's the result of decades of neoliberal corporatism - we've allowed the rich to evade taxes, wage endless wars, send all the jobs overseas, and literally none of the wealth is trickling down any more. This is the product of Reaganism.
