Seeing a lot of folks saying we called Malon "Marin" (the similar character from Link's Awakening), but this isn't the case. We were quoting the developers when refering to Malon, and the character's Japanese name is Maron. You can see this if you watch the video with captions enabled. We should probably have put a note on screen though. As for calling Lon Lon Ranch "Romani Ranch" in the intro, that was just a dumb mistake and it's a shame we let it slip by.

Admittedly the second face wasn't very obvious to me as a kid, until I saw its depiction in the official manga... in which a light lit up in my head realizing what he was trying to do in-game.

@@SorcererLance It's practically a trope at this point. Those of you who played _Okami_ will know of a character known as Onigiri-sensei that did the head spin into a different personality. Even Rare (then known as Rareware) pulled this trope in _Conker's Bad Fur Day_ with the angry deaf cog with a cigar in his mouth spinning into a nicer but foppy persona smoking a cigarette in a holder. Their names are Carl (the former) and Quentin (the latter)

People nowadays don't understand how massive this game was at the time. It's like developing the equivalent of TotK without having BotW as a reference. And a very limited experience regarding 3D videogames because it was relatively new at the time. And a lot of the game's mechanics are an integral part of gaming today. Z targeting, still background to create a 2.5 D space, dynamic combat with sidehop and backflip, contextual camera angles to indicate progression with a unique sound cue associated... It's a different type of nostalgia, like we are actually learning and living the news about games from 20 years ago, reading magazines and feeling like the N64 is the most modern and cool thing in the world. Nah this has been common practice for over a century at this point. For example you can view parts of the original live action animation reference used on the 1938 version of Snow White. I guess you could argue it was somewhat new for the games industry but even then you had games like Prince of Persia in 1989 and Mortal Combat in 1992 showcasing live action/rotoscoped animation reference well before Pokemon Snap released

It's interesting how their perspective is how a lot of old heads feel about the NBA today. They prefer traditional ball more focused on skill and ball IQ over raw athleticism. The zoomers have a low attention span thanks to modern technology, and want to see high octane feats of athleticism to hold their attention. It's also largely why the WNBA doesn't draw any interest in America.

It would be awesome if Nintendo remade OOT and added in the cut content they wanted to have but couldn't from hardware limitations. Same for Majors mask

I know that the development went through multiple iterations, but the notion of development hell as the term is commonly understood seems almost alien to a masterpiece like Ocarina of Time.

I remember reading that Wario's girlfriend fact way long ago in an issue of (Mexican) Club Nintendo and I'm glad to see my memory wasn't just crafting that out of thin air - and that Club Nintendo was, as usual, very good with their sources! Thanks for this. I really enjoy this sort of video because there's so much out there in old magazines around the world that no one's picked up in years, and I hope that places like the Video Game History Foundation can help us unearth the gems all buried in there.

Every time the trivia about "Wario's girlfriend" gets dredged up, I only get sadder that it means nobody was likely talking to anybody from Nintendo SPD for their input. We could have had Captain Syrup as Wario's "partner" and a regular for other Mario spinoffs ages ago!

Now that you've put it into the world, I am extra sad that it never happened. Wonder what made Daisy okay but Syrup was off limits?... But then again, would it have meant sacrificing Waluigi, and would it be worth it?
