This is actually a holiday staple for my family! We've made it for every Thanksgiving and Christmas as long as I can remember. We usually just rely on the Cool Whip to keep everything together. It's especially popular with the kids, and with my Uncle Shaylen (redundant, I know).

Awww. I loved that salad when I was a kid! My family didn’t add as much juice though, and no eggs. My Aunt used an instant pudding mix instead and it all went into the fridge 😊

​@@zoezzzarko1117not sure about OP's recipe, but the one my mom makes has cream cheese mixed in the cool whip base to help it set up in lieu of this hasty stovetop egg custard, also helps balance out the sweetness way better than straight cool whip. I've also seen a lot of recipe variations with maraschino cherries, coconut, and/or nuts added in.

I think the vaguest form of "salad" Is any cold dish covered or tossed in a dressing, and a lot of 'dressings' are oil based. I'm guessing the Cool Whip counts, as technically, it's oil based. Mayo and Miracle Whip are the same situation. They're oil-based and originally made as toppings, aka dressings.

My aunt always makes frog eyed salad for get togethers, maybe I was conditioned from a young age, but I liked it. It wasn’t my all time favorite (that was Watergate salad 😊) but I always took a serving so that I could tell her that yes, I had tried it and it was so good, as always. 😘

@@zoezzzarko1117 it’s a base of green jello, cream cheese and whipped cream, then there is fruit cocktail, pineapple, coconut and some nut but I don’t remember what…. All mixed together so that the result was a delicious cross between ambrosia and a jello mold.

The pasta is kind of a weird ingredient but most pastas have a pretty neutral flavor that shouldn't affect the taste much. I can maybe see having an issue with the texture of the dish, but not really the taste.

Same! When my family on my dads side used to live in the same area and we would have big family dinners (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter) this was always one of the things I got a big scoop of. It's definitely an interesting combination, but it's so good and makes me so nostalgic. I haven't had it in years unfortunately.

at first i thought that was what he was having difficulty saying...I was surprised by marshmallows. I figured it'd want lime jell-o...cause frog salad i've seen is usually green.green and marshmallowy and generally disgusting, largely because I hate pineapple.

@@krisztinabajusz5750 that particular recipe (and quite a few others) is wasteful . Those things don't go together. It's not any more noble to let food that you won't eat hang around until it spoils. This food wouldn't sustain or nourish anyone else. Throwing away or composting a mistake of a recipe isn't bad or wrong even if there are people who are food insecure. They're not food insecure because this content creator bought it. Only food waste worth talking about is all the waste at the point of production and distribution. That's where the power to really impact lies.

@@Aaron-zu3xn Ambrosia in my family is Cottage cheese Cool whip Flavored gelatin mix Fruit of choice usually a good match to the gelatin flavor Nuts Marshmallows optional A person can go steps further and add Cherries and/or a different fruit than usual That’s our Ambrosia usually served at Christmas and sometimes at Thanksgiving

I love frog eye salad. My grandma would make it for every special occasion. But hers is more of a lime base and she would add some neon green food coloring to it to make it green like a frog. Oh and also she would add coconut shavings.

there’s a thing called Ambrosia that my family makes every year for thanksgiving- it’s from my mom’s polish family it’s a dessert that’s basically jello powder, marshmallows, cream cheese, cool whip, mandarin oranges, and sometimes some chopped nuts. it’s insanely good and this video reminded me of that 😤

I've done the same recipe from my father's side of the family. Also polish. I don't think we've ever done jello powder, but we do the same marshmallows, pineapple, mandarin oranges, cool whip, sour cream to offset the obscene sweetness, maraschino cherries, and shredded coconut. It's always been less of a salad and more just dessert

I grew up eating this, always loved when my friends looked at me like I murdered their mothers when I told them what it was, most people thought it was literally eyes in cool whip. Also, I never have seen it made like this, usually it's just the fruit, the juice from the fruit, the noodles and cool whip. You also need a lot more whip to noodle ratio
