Im glad you posted this today. My daughter's cat attacked me and bit me so badly I had to be on an IV antibiotic drip 3x a day for a full week, about a year ago. Two days ago me and my daughter rushed him to the vet bc he just wasn't well and struggling to breathe. $5k later he died, he was full of cancer. The vet called him "an angry kid" bc he was. Today I have to pick his poor little body up and we are burying him, I really don't want to have to but there's no one else to do it, my daughter can't drive. 😢 its a sad day. I was bitten by a neighbor’s cat, and it took 5 months of treatment on my hand to kill the infection. Fortunately I had just recently read that cat bites are much more dangerous than dogs’ because cats have extremely sharp pointed teeth and when they bite, whatever’s in their mouths gets pushed deep into the wound. I had a pasteurella infection and only the high dose of Cipro killed it. But I knew to get to the ER and they started the IV antibiotics within 3 hours of the bite. Still, a 5 months fight. Take heed, people, please! Cat bites can be life-threatening.

Agreed, poor thing was in so much discomfort :( I just really hope that the owners can get her shaved somewhere else and then be able to actually maintain the coat, after seeing what their poor cat looked like in this video. I know not all cats are easy for brushing and may require patience or different brushes or simply short brushing sessions, but having a long haired cat and NOT brushing is not helping the animal. If they can't handle a long haired cat, they might want to reconsider getting her properly groomed (shaved) regularly or consider finding her a more suitable home.

I'm giving the benefit of the doubt that Maude has likely always been difficult to groom. When you can't do something, small tasks spiral out of control and become much bigger. If Maude's owners truly didn't care, they wouldn't have brought her in. We also don't know about what's going on in their life. Maybe other circumstances have put noticing the cat becoming matted on the back-burner, like financial or mental issues. Also, we don't know where this person lives. Vanessa has said she's one of the few people in her area that even grooms cats. Add in that this cat is fiesty and that shrinks the pool of groomers available to assist to a much shorter list. We've seen where desperate owners have flown across the country to have Vanessa groom their pet because all other groomers have refused them (usually due to just not having the liability insurance if something happens, not out of malice). In short and as Vanessa says, we just don't know the whole story, so we shouldn't jump to conclusions. At the end of the day, the cat was brought in and help was attempted. The owner is doing what they can and we don't need to kick someone when they're down just to feel better about ourselves.

You're an amazing groomer / instructor. I'm hoping I can get ideas how to protect myself to clip my 12 yr old seniors nails. He's a black domestic shorthair that I got a year ago. He sleeps touching me and sticks to me like glue, but I can't hold onto a claw or get him covered with a towel to try a burrito wrap. He turns into a flying cat with claws flailing. So I started trimming them while he's sleeping next to me, whichever nail is available. That means I can clip a nail every other day or so, I guess it's better than nothing. I'll try gloves next....

Does anyone else hold their breath while watching Vanessa deal with the more difficult and frightened cats and dogs? This kitty cat is so beautiful, what a face..when she wasn't trying to end the groomer of course. This woman has the patience and kindness of a saint. Bless her sweet, loving heart.

Well, not so much that they don't calm down, it's just that they take a lot more time, and space is usually needed. If you really upset them, even if they like you, you gotta buy a bit of trust back sometimes. And well, they are more stressed out and on edge than angry or upset. Cats can stay in high alert mode for very long when they feel threatened. They expect the threat to come back, because they know it usually does, so they can take up to several days to calm down in the worst cases. And they very much can tell the difference between you coming at them to "do something" vs not, hence the reaction.

Such a sweet girl who chose violence. Thank you for helping her. I had a ragdoll cross who's tummy used to get matted no matter how much I brushed him. Grooming stressed him out so much that I used to take him to the vets where they groomed him under sedation - it was so much better for him.

Oh, this girlie is so much like my own forest cat... he is just the sweetest boy, until you try to groom his back half or undercarriage and then he goes nuts. We have resorted to an annual sedated lion cut and nail clip at the vet. But you are so wonderfully kind and patient with these difficult ones, giving them every opportunity to calm down and make it through the groom. On behalf of all 'difficult client' owners out there, I thank you!

This makes me really appreciate the understanding my girl and I have reached about being brushed. I can't imagine what I'd do if she needed this level of care.

Poor kitty. She's in so much pain. It's loud, she's with a stranger, it hurts, and she's scared. Sweet baby is just fighting for her life.

Yes, absolutely - hence the comment I made here pointing out the mistakes made. This was a VERY unprofessionally-handled cat, a terrified, pained cat - not an "angry" cat... The aggression stemmed from pain and fear. It's very sad to see the biased and irrational *anger* and fear in the biased human actually swearing at her...

My cat (pictured at right) had serious matting. She also had to be shaved, under sedation, at a vet's office. The matting just crept up on us as she aged, and by the time we really noticed it and began to try to deal with it, it was already a solid mat. I know how difficult trying to deal with a cat in this situation is. Kudos to you!

What a sweet face! She obviously has many good qualities, they were just not useful to her in this situation. Brava to both of you for a job well done with the least trauma possible. 💕🇨🇦

This is 2000% the same temperament as my cat Perry, to a T - I legitimately had pins made with her picture that say “I was victimized by Periwinkle Fuzzymittens” for those who have the misfortune of her attitude. I am equal parts sorry you had to deal with that, and super thankful for you helping her! (Most of her behavior seemed to be big-time fear aggression; as soon as the big scary noise making clippers went away and she had relief from the pain of the matting, she gave you love!)

This is almost exactly the way my childhood cat was 50 years ago. And she was a long-haired calico, beautiful but deadly. What happens is they don't like to be combed, it becomes too much of a hassle, then the matting gets that bad and requires a great effort and fight to get all of the mats and hairballs removed. My parents would put on heavy gloves and cut all of it off in the basement, where the neighbors could not hear what sounded like a massacre. I swear she made noises that rivaled the soundtrack for "The Exorcist".

We had the same experience with our Maine Coone as she got older. She hated being brushed yet couldn't reach spots herself. She would attack and scream bloody murder when we shaved her matts off in the summer. And she would sulk and curse us for weeks after. Miss that cranky old lady.
