Dylan Marlais Thomas (27 October 1914 - 9 November 1953) was a Welsh poet and writer whose works include the poems "Do not go gentle into that good night" and "And death shall have no dominion", as well as the "play for voices" Under Milk Wood. He also wrote stories and radio broadcasts such as A Child's Christmas in Wales and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog. He became widely popular in his lifetime; and remained so after his death at the age of 39 in New York City. By then, he had acquired a reputation, which he had encouraged, as a "roistering, drunken and doomed poet".
Dylan Marlais Thomas (* 27. Oktober 1914 in Swansea, Wales; † 9. November 1953 in New York City) war ein walisischer Schriftsteller. Thomas schrieb Gedichte, Essays, Briefe, Drehbücher, autobiographische Erzählungen und ein Theaterstück: Under Milk Wood (Unter dem Milchwald), sein Hauptwerk, das als Hörspiel 1954 postum mit dem Prix Italia ausgezeichnet wurde.
Roedd Dylan Marlais Thomas (27 Hydref 1914 - 9 Tachwedd 1953) yn fardd poblogaidd yn ysgrifennu yn Saesneg, ac yn dod o Abertawe. Cafodd ei eni a'i fagu yn rhif, Cwmdonkin Drive yn ardal yr Uplands. Er ei fod wedi treulio ei holl blentyndod yng Nghymru oherwydd agwedd gwrth-Gymraeg ei dad ni ddysgodd yr iaith ond fe wyddir ei fod yn hoff iawn o'i wlad. Mae'n enwog am fod yn fardd ddeiliadon ac am ei ddarlleniadau hynod o'i ddarnau. Mae hefyd yn enwog am ei alcoholiaeth. Honnodd, "An alcoholic is someone you don't like, who drinks as much as you do." Priododd Caitlin a chawsant dri o blant. Ym 1995 agorwyd Canolfan Dylan Thomas yn ardal y Marina yn Abertawe.

Dylan was so laid back in his readings. He knew that he had something to say and he said it. It wasn't declamatory at all, just a confidence in himself and his work. And he knew that he was weak (aren't we all) and that he was an alcoholic and died when he wanted to.

Here in N. Z. we think of the great Welsh rugby players, jpr Williams Barry John Gareth Edwards, and here's a poet hero speaking in some weird English accent. As a boy he delighted in speaking made up words, and then discovered drinking ! The perfect combination. Cheers.

Wonderful readings by DT. I especially love that second poem and he speaks it beautifully, profoundly. What a masterpiece.

Why didn't some teacher or passer-by mention Dylan Thomas to me all those years ago?

Dylan. The great master. We have the privilege of hearing the likes of Shakespeare reading his own works.

50 years ago I sat in Mr Davies’s English class and listened as he explained the beauty of Poem in October. Half a century later and I am so grateful to have been in his class that day.
