A fellow also on KZbin, WeirdBeard, has an early 1970's Plymouth which had a badly rusted roof and ratty headliner. He removed the existing headliner pieces and repaired the roof from the inside. If I remember correctly he removed rust then painted the inside of the roof with some textured black paint that he also used on the top of the roof to simulate a vinyl roof. He bought the paint from Walmart, so the cost was low. It helps get rid of the rodent odors too - just a thought.

One of the most satisfying parts of barn fines or getting cars back on the road in general is cleaning the interior. I couldn’t believe how awesome my 63 Cadillac Coupe Deville‘s interior came out and it was so good to get that wonderful barn find smell out of it lol

I am enjoying your latest on the Monaco and the leather interior makes me wish I could help you with it. I met a guy in St. Louis a few months ago and he turned me onto HIDE FOOD. He used to work in the Mercedes dealership and this is what they used on their leather interiors. I had to order mine on eBay and it came from an island off the coast of the U.K. but this stuff is Magnamous! I use it on my old dried out saddlebags and seats on my motorcycles. It breathes new life into any kind of leather. I never want to be without it again. I have used every kind of leather conditioner or treatments on my leather seats (cars and bikes) or saddlebags and this stuff truly takes it to the next level. Just a tip from one who loves your cars and trucks and I can tell you're one who wants the best outcome. As the old commercial used to say, "Try It , You'll Like It". I had a 1965 dodge polara, I was told it was a 318. When I went to change the plugs and wires I ordered for a 318. The longest wire was way short. The guy at the parts store measured it I had a 383 big block, 727 torque flight transmission. The original heat shield was on the Intake. I did a front and rear break job. Let me tell you the speedometer went to 130,but when you got to 110 to 115 she started to float from the air going under the big chrome bumper up front I loved that car! Your monocoque reminds me so much of that car. GREAT CHANNEL!!!!!!

Hey Dylan...love the 65 Monaco! I have a 68 sport fury convertible - 383 four speed. My engine has a completely original bottom end at 130K miles. I installed 440 source heads and a lunati voodoo 256 cam. It runs awesome!!!...tons of torque. It has overdrive in it now and pulls great with 3.23 gears and 0.80 overdrive. Build the 383!

Another great episode, young man! Following along with your adventures is truly a highlight of my weeks. Advice on the engine/trans: go with your gut. If it feels too expensive to rebuild the original power train right now, it probably is. Do it later, if you like. You already know that this is not the most “in demand” car out there, so there’s no shame in saving some money by installing a different engine, trans, or both. You’re smart, resourceful, and determined, so I have no doubt that you’ll make a wise choice. Whatever you decide, I’ll be eagerly and gratefully following along. It is extremely satisfying cleaning the interior and exterior and under the hood of cars. I got a '76 AMC Pacer that sat for 20 years in the woods. Like the Dodge, the engine is completely seized. I've been doing lately what you did in this video, pressure washed it and used SOS pads and I actually use purple power on everything to clean it up. I also go back over the interior with Sprayway Interior Detailer. It always makes a world of difference in how the car looks. I actually did a '77 Porsche the same way,, its on my channel, and will be uploading a 4 part series to it as well as a series on the Pacer I'm working on now. Keep up the good work on the Monaco, its my favorite car you have right now. I'd rebuild the original engine, and do what u gotta do to reuse original parts or change heads on it if you want. If it didn't have an engine in it at all, or the block was no good and not rebuildable, I'd say swap in that other complete engine you have.

Hey Dylan. I bought an old 1971 ford ltd that was setting for 40 years down in Virginia. The car only had 6800 miles on it. It was in perfect condition running wise .But the sun just baked it. l brought it home and started cleaning it up. So I thought I would mention that I tried everything to clean it up. Nothing seemed to work very well. So went down to the Dollar store and got a spray bottle of Black magic. It's bleach white tire cleaner. I know it sounds funny but it works great. My grandmother's 1967 Newport was a 383 2 barrel. My Father's 1969 Town and County wagon was a 383 4 barrel. There was a big difference in power and sound. Good luck with this project.

I remember a car like this displayed at the New York Worlds Fair in 1965 . I also built the 1/25th scale model . The 65 and 66 MoPar product line were attractive cars .

Having done this before, I highly recommend removing the seats and carpets before undertaking this kind of restoration. Way easier to clean all that outside, and gives you more room to work the center console, rear self, ect. Oh, and always start from the top and work your way down.

I say: set the original engine and trans aside. There’s no point in spending needless time and money if you’ve already got a solid drivetrain sitting around. Plus, if you ever decide to sell it, the new owner would probably appreciate having the unmolested originals to build however they feel is most appropriate

That interior cleaned up nicely. It's amazing how a simple cleaning can go a long way. As for the engine, I'd love to see it rebuilt with the original gear reduction starter reinstalled on the motor instead of a new mini starter. This car will be sharp, once the work is complete.

Had a 1966 Dodge Monaco with 63K miles, the 383 2bbl, and drums at each corner. It was a fantastic car. The dash and instrument cluster was absolutely beautiful at night.

I am loving the content! Listen, I’m an old (almost 60) man who’s never had the opportunity to rebuild an old car, but I was around when these old muscle cars were new. I learned to drive in a 1971 Ford Torino GT with the 351 Cleveland and a 4 speed. I know this opinion isn’t the popular one, but my advice is pray about it, and if rebuilding the 383 is too expensive right now, set it aside and use the running big block. Another option (and my preference) would be to go to the junkyards and find a fairly low mileage late model Hemi and toss it in there. Kinda like you did with the Challenger. Put a manual transmission in it if you can, it’s harder to make it work but I’ve done a auto to manual switch and it’s not that bad. Whatever you do, we’ll be watching and enjoying every minute of it. God bless you and your family!

Converting a C body to a manual using stock parts is a quite expensive and difficult job and using modern parts from, say a wrecked four door Territory is uncharted territory.

I have used SOS pads for cleaning chrome, stainless and such on cars for years. The soap in them adds to the lubrication to prevent scratching. Never seen a Monaco with the buckets and console. Really cool.

I am glad it turned out ok on the interior. You could get the basics down like cooling brakes and have a solid rolling chassis and then drop that other engine in just to have it driving while you rebuild the 383. No matter what we will be here to watch 👍

Well, you are right. Time and money is a consideration. Install the second engine and tranny. Rebuild the 383 as time and money permits. Who says you can't do a second engine swap. I personally have pulled an engine and swapped in a similar one so that I could drive, while i rebuilt the original. Nice job on the clean out. Glad somebody else has learned the way of the SOS pad. The SOS pads also help with the paint bringing back a little bit of the Finish. You could also use it on the outside paint job of the car it would look really good after you were done.

That boat motor lower unit appears to be from I believe a vintage Mercury outboard, which depending on location and what size motor it is from can be worth good money if it isn't totally detroyed to the point where the casings and all internal parts are beyond repair. I think you should put a different engine in the car while waiting for the original to be rebuilt unless you will be getting the original engine back soon. Back in the early 80's my older brother had a turquois 65 Dodge Polara 4 door post sedan with the 383 2 bbl in it. That car got good gas mileage and putting it bluntly, it went like hell and it rode fantastic... Man did it have a smooth ride -- it actually rode smoother than my 85 Cadillac, and got way better gas mileage too. The torn seats can actually be redone with a kit using a liquid vinyl of various colors and it includes various tinting agents so the color can be brought extremely close if not outright identical and it comes with texturing apliques that can match most if not all textures including leather and it does hold up even on leather repairs.

Mr. Good Hands was great! It was a hand cleaner, but it also incorporated a "liquid glove" coating that made your hands far easier to wash after getting dirty. I used to use it years ago when I was a field tech.

I had a 64 polara, 383, push button automatic. The car had excellent chrome and interior. Body was a rust bucket. My friends loved borrowing the car and I would warn them about the power of the drive train. Low and behold, they all got speeding tickets. I was driving in downtown Jacksonville and a girl ran a stop sign and bent the car in half got a $100 for the transmission and tires. Fun car.

All '65 Monacos had that console, in '65 that model was only available in a 2 door hardtop.

Had a '66 New Yorker 2dr, 440 TNT, 727...white with factory red interior and bucket seats. Very very similar car inside and out! It was really a solid car and mostly original and was a fantastic driving car. I summer drove it for years and traded it off. I do remember it had like 27 ashtrays in it! LoL

Go for the rebuild. I’m sure you can get some slugs pretty cheap and get those heads done. I had a 65 Polara in high school and college. I rebuilt the motor trans front end and did some interior work. I loved that car. It was a blast to drive (especially after I hopped up the motor). I was 11 yrs old when my dad bought a 1965 Monaco.Goth drivers license in that car 1970.Had a older brother drove it when new Would bark the tires shifting to second.Console. went from front to back.
