I ended up picking up a 2009 Sporty L883LX with less than 1900 miles for 4 grand. I started with cause I haven't ridden regularly in over a decade, wasn't sure a big investment on reacquainting myself to two wheels was wise. What if I didn't want to ride as much as I thought or laid it down? Now I'm stoked about it. Thinking of customizing the Sporty for fun rides and picking up a Dyna Switchback for touring.

Hi Jon, great video! Funny I found it just now. Quick story: Been a Sportster guy all my life. I'm on my third. Love these bikes! Found a *great* deal on an '06 Street Bob. Didn't need or want it, but couldn't pass it up. Now...uhh...the Sportster is up for sale. Big Twins really are great, no? But! The story ain't over. Friend of mine and I took the Sportster out the other day one last time to get some pictures of it before I sell it. I rode the Sporty, my friend rode the Dyna - did over 100 miles. All the while I'm thinking to myself, "Why am I selling this Sportster? I love it!" The Dyna on the other hand is *really* heavy...and I just don't like that. So I have mixed emotions about it. My friend (who owns a big Kawasaki Vulcan) was like, "If you want to sell this Street Bob, I will buy it right now. I gotta have one of these!" Decisions, decisions... Sportster is probably one of the greatest street bikes of all time. Unfortunately, it's just not a great Interstate highway bike. Nor is it a good two-up bike. I've taken my Sportster from here in Florida to Washington State...twice. Solo, of course. So long-distance *can* be done...but as you say, it's not the optimal bike for that. Bottom Line: I'm going to try to keep both the Dyna *and* the Sportster. P.S. Gotta disagree slightly about the power. My Dyna has the 88 cu.in. (1450cc) twin-cam motor, and it is definitely *not* all that much more powerful than the Sportster. They both "feel" about the same. It has to do with power-to-weight ratios. Sportster revs higher, pulls harder off the light. In an out-and-out drag race, I wouldn't say the Dyna would definitely win.
@JonsMotoGarage5 жыл бұрын
I hear ya for sure! When in doubt, keep em both! hahaha! And you make a great point - the power to weight ratio definitely makes a difference. I guess it depends if you're looking at the 883, 1200, 88ci, 103ci, etc. Thanks for watching and commenting!

The Dyna is a better bike. It has the nimbleness of a small bike for canyon carving, yet the comfort of a larger bike for longer 500+ mile rides. Even when I was a new rider I felt more comfortable on the Dyna. The Sportster is lighter with a higher power to weight ratio and as a new rider I had an eager wrist. The Dyna felt more stable and safer to me as a new and nervous rider. I personally don't think a Sportster is a good starter bike. Also when a new rider feels confident to move up to a larger bike, they'll have to get rid of the Sportster and market for Sportsters is soft, definitely a buyers market

I've had three Sportsters (two 883's and a 1200) and a Dyna FXD. I absolutely loved all my Sportsters, but you're only riding about 100 miles before you're ready to get off for a coffee break. The Dyna handled like the Sportsters, but you knew it was bigger and heavier. The REAL difference was on the highway. The Dyna just floated along and I could (and did) ride it all day long without the least bit of discomfort. If you're riding rides of a couple hundred miles a day or less, you'll be happy with a Sportster and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. If you plan on doing longer rides, cross country, etc., go with the Dyna.

After riding Harleys for over 25 years, I can honestly say I've never heard anyone say they would have rather they got the Sportster. Don't get me wrong I love my Sportster Sportster can do everything a motorcycle is supposed to do, and in many aspects it will bury a big twin. But For the Love of All that is good and wholesome in the world Sportsters are meant to be Sportsters. If you put a big tank or saddlebags on a Sportster you are clearly showing everyone you don't want your bike you want a big twin. Don't be that guy. If you put tall risers or gape hangers(gape hangers are those very long tall handlebars what's really help you find the gaping assholes that love them) clearly you don't want to Sportster. But if you like the simplicity of a pushrod engine, or you just a Harley, but still know how to enjoy a bike the way they're meant to then you will love your Sportster

I never understood the sporster hate their great for new riders & great commuter/bar hopper for seasoned riders. I love them both & was very sad HD combined the dyna line with the softail, sure the new street Bob & low rider look good in a soft tail but it will definitely mean less crazy customs. I have both and came from the school vintage middle displacement sport standards like the Honda CB, Kawasaki KZ, etc. IMO, the Sportster is a branch on that family tree and the Roadster version will feel right at home if you like those and want to stop and turn. To amplify performance get a XR1200 won't disappoint and it's cousin the Buell (any of them). The Dyna is used for more gentle riding and I'm a much better rider than what the Superglide can deliver in terms of handling and braking. I feel the added mass of the Dyna wants to keep moving in the direction it wants to and the brakes won't get you out of trouble if you get in over your head. So it's comes down to the main type of riding you do if you have to just pick one I think you can find good used older examples from private owners and get both for $10k if you look hard enough.

I started with a sportster and liked it. Then I traded it for a Super Glide Custom and hated it. Now I ride a Softail Slim and love it. But I'm looking for another Sportster to go with it.

Love it Jon. I have a iron 883 with apes. It’s a fun little ripper but next is a dyna. What bars and size are on your dyna. It’s like an H-bar

The bars are 12" fxr divisions. They're out of phx az. 🤘😎

"Best" of course is subjective. If ya don't care for what ya own it's easy to sell it and try something else. Used Sporties are cheap because it was re-marketed as an entry level machine to people who don't know much about motorcycles. They're plentiful used, easy to work on and do not have the spectacularly obsolete big twin final drive design which makes belt (or chain and sprocket) replacement like doing cataract surgery via the anus. I own a variety of BTs and Sporties and would take either Evo version anywhere. If buying used noobs should avoid the older four-speed Evo Sporties because the clutch/alternator abortion is prone to failure, but if ya score a nice one cheap ya can install a five speed engine after cutting off the sidestand mount then welding on an aftermarket mount at the five speed location. I fell into a good running 89" S&S stroker kitted '97 for $1700 (I now approve of rat droppings!) and when paint time comes it's getting the largest "883" tank decal I can find with an added decimal point between the 88 and the 3. The owner had it all over the country with little fuss. I've worked on many customer bikes and find the simple, highly refined Evo Sporty an excellent drivetrain.

Been on a lot of bikes. Sportsters are definitely my favorite. Currently on a 1200t. Reinhardt exhaust, air filter, tuner, cams. Thing flys! Just came off a 72'. Will be keeping the 1200t for a long time.

Just bought my first Harley. I bought a beautiful and badass XL883L Superlow with a club fairing and a cam and Thunderheader exhaust. I'm not a big guy at 5 foot 11 and 175 pounds but this bike feels like it was made for me. It has a 13 inch Progressive suspension instead of the original 10 inch suspension and it's a great bike! Has plenty of power and it's a joy to ride.

I can answer the fuel economy question $6 to take you a hundred miles if you're running right😉👍 and those are facts and that's running a 94 FXR lowrider

It’s not that it’s a girl bike.. There’s been some badass sportsters.. Roadster, XR1200, etc. that arguably outperforms the legendary FXR. With the legendary 1200 evo. No idea why harley went the 48 route and fat front tire. They need to bring back the roadster. It just has the “v6” smaller motor 😂

Coming from a Honda CB 750, I bought a used 883. Great price, but what a disappointment! No guts. I then found a 1200 Custom. Fun bike. A stage 1 brought it to where it should be.

They both suck.Harley deserves to go out of business.All there bikes suck other than the cruisers like the road glide. There excuse not to make the fxr any longer is, its too much work.The Dyna is a fxr wannabe and now the street Bobby that is strange replaced that toilet. Harley wake up make the fxr again with the same frame.I mean really its too hard.Ill pay the difference.
@MattCassCook3 жыл бұрын
I’ve got that exact sportster. I do want more power but I’ve come to love it. I see my friends on massive Harleys and it’s cumbersome AF around the city. The main thing I don’t like about it is that it’s waaaay too low! When I go over speed bumps I have to stand up OFF the bike or it clangs the frame. And yes... I’ve adjusted the preload. Will update to a FatBoy at some point 🤘🏻

comparing a dyna and a sporty is all user preference. I own a 1200 and i have riden a couple dynas with the 103s and i just felt like the dyna was a clumsy giant compared to the sportster. I stunt my sport as well so its honestly all preference and riding style

Hi Jon, I was hoping you would have shown both bikes one in front of the other, I used to ride a lot of different types of bikes from the late 60's thru the 80's. My last bike was an Electra Glide 1200. This was the time before social media and no body called Sportsters girls bikes. My son purchased an E.G. and I was drooling when he pulled up. So now at the arthritic age of 65 I have been searching craigs list . Found 1) a sportster 48 $6750, 2) Dyna Street bob made to look like a soft tail slim with out the soft tail. $6995, 3) A Fatster which if you don't know is a 1200 Sportster engine made to look like a Fat Boy with wire wheels and fat white walls, , very cool looking and only $5750. In my younger painless days I owned a couple of hard tail choppers as well and hard tail or rear suspension it didn't seem to make any difference. Now in my older years things hurt A LOT, but I want to go ride with my son. So you being a younger guy do you think that the big twins are that much more comfortable?

Like you said it depends on what you’re after sporty are cheap easy to Bob or chop. They are cheaper they are growing in popularity again among the custom scene because of the price point. Dyna better for long distance you can customize to your fitting it has more power both are good bikes that you can do anything with even at more power to it I had or have both at one point

For an around town/day trip bike, I prefer the Dyna. It has a more comfortable ride than the Sporster, can handle twisty canyons better than any cruiser out there and like you said, has more power on the freeway. But if you're looking for comfort on rides longer than 4 hours, the Dyna is not for you. Just my opinion.
