The "B" motor, is the solftail motor line. "B" stands for balanced. The Dyna has the "A" or standard, rubber mounted motor. The Dyna is the one that shakes at stoplights. If it has exposed rear shocks, it's in the Dyna family.

Shocks are gone from the DYNA line now. Now they have softail suspension or damn close to the same (hidden shocks). If they want to play the hide the shocks game it would be nice to see a mono shock design. Additionally why do guys who buy rockets for less Cha Ching. Get Ohlin forks and Brembo brakes. Right there Harley has two major setbacks for their hotrod the DYNA. If I could institute a standard for motorcycles. It would be anything over 600cc must have duel front disk brakes. Paint my picture (minus a mono-shock) and I bet you have some ideas floating around. Wish we had a motorcycle junk yard where I live. I would be their weekly waiting on the crashed rocket with a good set of Ohlin front forks that are the right dimensions. I also kick myself every day for not ordering a FXDX. I got my FXD a 2000 that was built APR 1999. Germany we could pick the model and that was all.

The dyna as a rubber mount motor. The "B" motor stands for balanced motor like what's on the soft tail. I have a black 2003 super glide with a solo seat and down and out drag pipes. Put different jets on it. Plan on mild cam next winter. I WON my bike at the Zanesville, OH Vietnam Vets Bike Show. Four days later I rode her out to Sturgis from southeast Ohio. My first 1000 mile pip change was in Carson City, Iowa. It was freaking one of the best experiences I've ever had. Ole blackie had 7 miles on her when I got her. Her and I have had some adventures. She has lasted longer than any man has...lol..! My dyna is the perfect bike for me. The sportsters are top heavy and dont have enough ass for me to be happy riding one for long. My bike was meant for me, she is perfect. The dyna handles fantastic. I can throw into the turns with ease. I can handle a street glide just fine, but I'm going to be perfectly honest it's the parking that's a pain. Theres times when parking isnt ideal I have to strategically park it. I'm not to ashamed to admit it. Im a women and at times it's just to damn heavy. I don't like anyone touchinv my bike or help me back up so the Dyna is perfect for me. If they come.out with a limited edition Ill have one! With harleys bigger motor wow she will be wicked.

So a little explination on why Harley dropped the Dyna, from a Harley salesman, and total Dyna bro. The long story short is the new 18 Softtail frame made the Dyna frame obsolete, so they combined the lines. Now a slightly more nerdy in depth commentary. So the Dyna frame was always a lightweight agile platform, vs the Softtail was always a heavier more rigid platform. Due to it's light weight frame the Dyna was less rigid and more prone to twisting under stress even under it's own power. (Magic numbers being around 100-110 ftlbs or hp) when they redesigned the new Softtail frame I'm 2018 they were able to chave 35lbs of weight and make it 34% more rigid. This made the Dyna obsolete, as you now had a Softtail frame that was as light as a Dyna and even more rigid than previous Softtail models. that's why they moved some of the most popular dyna models over to the new Softtail platform, such as the lowrider and FatBob as well as revived a few previously defunct dyna models such as the FXDR, and Sport Glide. I'm sure with Harley's promise to release some obnoxious number of models over the next ten years we will see more dyna models make the same switch.(wide glide super glide ect)
@relikaneliengod53075 жыл бұрын
From a world market standpoint. Emmision standards in Europe are very strict, the engines used in the old dynas aren't up to par so they'd be losing 1/5 of their market automatically, either they drop the line, or change the engine. And as you said, the frame is obsolete, might as well merge them into softails. Same reason they dropped so many sportsters, the evo engine doesn't meet the strict standards in europe

The Dyna line was dropped as part of a costs saving move. They went to a semi-modular manufacturing process. All new models will use the same motor, mounted in a very similar frame, (certainly with the same motor mount at it's heart) with a lot of interchangeable parts. The sales leader for the last few years of the mixed models was the soft-tail. So now, all bikes for the most part will be variations on the soft-tail. This saves a lot in tooling, training, and manufacturing expenses. Even the options on the motor are modular, basically what size bore do you want in the cylinders? One apparently overlooked advantage for the owners in this move is that maintenance and aftermarket upgrading will be simplified. But in a way, the company sold it's soul with this move, as most of their line will now just be variations of the same model. This may come back to hurt the company in the long run, but time will tell. I remember the fuss back when the EVO motor came out and all the predictions for the end of the company back then. (Yeah, I'm that old, much older than that, too. I can remember when panheads were cut into choppers because there were a lot of cheap ones around. I'm practically ancient :D) I can see the possibility of the line being expanded again in the future if the market allows. They are having some teething pains right now, which is not unusual for a new engine and model of any vehicle. If you do buy a new (2018) Harley, avoid any model with a hydraulic clutch which IIRC is only on the big touring bikes at this point. They are having an issue with oil migration on those, and haven't found a fix yet. There are also reports of oil sumping issues on some M8 motors that have been aftermarket upgraded. In no way am I saying not to buy a Harley if you want one, just to be aware of the issues and know what to watch out for at the dealer.

People don’t get to hear the old Harley idle sound anymore. I sold it 3 years ago and deeply regret it. I wanted to take long rides and I got pretty stiff and sore on it after awhile. But I shoulda just kept it as a last of its kind trophy. I think in the future it won’t be knuckleheads that’s so rare...it will be Harley’s that had a carbed engine at all! Big mistake. Matter of fact I think I’m going to find a 2003 100th anniversary model and store it away. Not a big deal now but give it another 30 years

Been riding bikes for 60+ years. Always wanted a Harley, but it was always out of reach due to cost. Don't ask me how, but when the pandemic hit, it actually put me I a financial position to actually buy one (it was a bucket list item for me). I ended up getting a great deal on a low mileage "05 Dyna Wide Glide TC88. I absolutely love it! Probably spent more on upgrades and new parts than I originally spent for the bike, but it was worth every penny. For me, the weight to power ratio is perfect, and it handles like a dream. And of course, there is the "cool" factor of the chopper look. The wide glides have a bit more rake which really improves the look and provides better straight line handling at speed. I installed S&S cams and an open belt primary last year. I posted a couple of videos if anyone is interested. I will never sell it, and will pass it down to one of my sons to use. Best bike I've ever owned!

Anyone saying HD made a mistake dropping the Dyna line is nuts. Long runs of their lines mean that their new bikes compete against used bikes. They've got to have some bread and butter lines, but cancellation is what makes them desired. You wouldn't be thinking of Dyna right now if you could buy it off a showroom floor. With so many models, HD has a great opportunity to rotate lineups. I think they need to start capitalizing on that to give consumers a sense of urgency. With all the new bikes they have planned, I think you're going to see a lot of limited runs lasting a year or two on legacy models.

Hit the nail on the head, even if the Dyna comes back it won’t be the same. I traded my dyna for a 17 FXDLS last year because I want the classic feel of the bike, something the Milwaukee cannot replicate.
@danielpyle95656 жыл бұрын
Softail twin cam had the B motor, B for balance shafts. Dynas used the A motor, the same one used in the bagger. The A motors are rubber mounted to dampen vibrations, the Softail had a solid mounted engine which made the B or balance motor necessary.

I miss the bikes with 103, 96, 88 and 110, new Milwaukee's just aren't the same. They go for sure but justvdontvhave the feeling. I had to get a dyna wide glide cause I'm tall. All baggers are so confined and small, cantvstretch

That is not a 2005. It is at least an '06 with the 49 mm forks and the battery cover being the visual cues. Keep up the good work and keep sharing the good news about Jesus Christ! God bless!

Sean, you mentioned after making the comment about the Harley "B" motor that somebody would offer a correction, so here it is. What you said about the Dyna, and your description of the "B" motor is exactly opposite. The Twin Cam engines which have now been replaced by the Milwaukee 8 had two variants. There was one engine which had a counter balancer and the other engine variant which did not. They were simply referred to Twin Cam and Twin Cam-B engines. In a nutshell the "B" engines where the bikes which had the counter balanced engines. Those engines were reserved for the Softail models. The non-counter balanced engines were reserved for the Dyna and the Touring family and were rubber mounted in the frame. So what you said about the Dyna is true in one sense...you certainly feel more vibration and can visually see the motor rocking in the rubber mounted frame, whereas the counter balanced motor is much smoother....and some might argue more refined as there is less vibration and no need for rubber motor mounts. Because of the "B" motor's counter balancers, they had a lower rpm than the non-B motors. Hope this gives you a better idea between the difference of the two. I agree with what you said in the video, the Dyna models are without a doubt the best riding bikes in the Harley family, next to the Touring models.

I think you are right. I loved my Street Bob. It was unique. As soon as I got my 883 (first Harley) I quickly realized everyone and their mothers had one. When I upgraded to the Street Bob (Dyna), I got compliments by everyone. Little old ladies would compliment it and then tell me to be careful because they had a son around my age. Had to get ride of my S.B. and I have to say I am not a fan of the new Softtail Street Bobs. I'll have to ride one and see if the ride is the same, but until then, my heart is set on a Sportster 48 Custom with mini-apes. Good video.

I have 2 Dyna Wide Glides…best Harley in my opinion. One with 20” ape hangars, and the other with drag bars and extended front end (10” over on tubes = 45’ rake - awesomeness 😎). Love your humor and Praising our Lord 🙏🏻😊👍🏻

No. The Twin Cam "B" engine has a balance shaft and is solidly mounted. The Dyna twin cam engine is rubber mounted. So you have it ass backwards. All reports indicate that the new Softails with the 107 and 114 engines are better in every way. They're even lighter.

I have a 2002 FXDL, that has the hot forged cranckshaft. It has a stage 4 kit, bigbore and stroker, 103ci and i shaved the weight down to 263kg fully fueled. With better the shocks this thing rides and handles like it should have from the start. Best handling Harley so far.
@calvinhandley23736 жыл бұрын
You're half right. Twin-Cam Softails had the "B" motor, which had Mitsubishi style balance shafts. It was introduced in 2000 a year after the Dyna and Touring Twin Cams, which were rubber mounted.
@chrisstevens93235 жыл бұрын
Yes those motors are not balanced but they are rubber mounted like the touring bikes. The softail motors are balanced but rigid mounted to frame.

I have a 2008 rocker C. It has the "B" motor. The B is for the balanced motor. Its designed to reduce vibration and be smoother than the typical uneven harley motor. Both are great motors. Just different

A motor in the dyna. U balanced. B motor in the softail. Balanaced. And its not unbalalnced crankshafts. They are either counter weighted or in counter weighted

they probably dropped the Dyna line for a few years because they were made at the assembly plant here in Kansas City that closed down and relocated to York PA.

The B Motor is on the Softails and is the balanced motor because it's installed in the frame of the Softail with no rubber mounts. HD found that there was no way to rubber mount the engines in the Softail so they counter balanced those motors and called them the B Motors. The A Motors are in the Touring and Dynas.

The market was over saturated with cruisers that very few people were interested in buying. Touring and hard baggers have been the bikes of choice for the last 15 years.

Had an 03 883r I loved because I felt like I was riding a motorcycle, vibration,you could feel the mechanical nature of it. Traded for an flh. Hated it, too heavy, had no rider/machine feel to it. traded it for a 14 low rider. couldn't be happier.

The "B" motor is in the Rigid mounted SOFTAILS ONLY !!! the Dyna has a "A" motor and is Rubber Mounted, and the "B" stands for Balanced, because the Softail motor the "B" has a counter balancer to take away some of the vibration
