Out of chaos, order instead of vice-versa. Painting over an old painting still makes my brain hurt...until you're almost done. Love the dynamic juxtaposition of color! Mission accomplished, Michael.

Michael, your work just gets better and better. Your skill as a colorist and your understanding of color and value for example have always been evident, but in the last year or two your paintings have captured the scene more and more masterfully. I love how you are achieving this high level of technicality in a complex and aesthetically appealing composition, all done in the narrow confines of a brief plein air session in one of the most dynamic natural settings, I.e., the pacific coast. I think that I wouldn’t be surprised to turn on YT to watch you doing ‘a dynamic plein air composition seaside in the midst of a category 5 hurricane and tsunami warning,” and pulling it off. In all seriousness, I really love this painting. The colors of the rocks and the green sea, and those wonderful purply shadows and the atmospheric effects, and the choice to put the distant landmass at the horizon, etc all combined to make a really interesting and dynamical composition that imposes a nice, harmonic order to the immense view of the natural world with its many chaotic rhythms. Excellent. Thanks for the video

Thanks Brandon! I really appreciate your comment! Although I have no plans to paint in a hurricane I’ve considered painting in a smaller storm 😂 I’m so glad you think I’m improving. I’m definitely having more fun!

I really like the composition. Also the shot at the end of the film of the scene you painted was a good idea.

I remember this tidal platform. 42 years ago my invertebrate zoology class visited it with professors Todd Newberry and John Pearse. We went out in hip waders behind the outgoing tide, with little waterproof field notebooks, and sketched creatures we found, noting the conditions and surrounding fauna. I found a baby red octopus in one pool. You are so right about the purple shadows. I have watched this twice, getting a little nervous about the tide coming in. I remember after my first year of Patreon you sent a wonderful painting of a little corner in Maine. Do you still do that? Because it was another year last October, and if you decide you don't want this one, I really do, please.

Michael- just fantastic. You make it look like it flows out of the end of your brush like magic. It’s interesting how the same place can yield a new painting, similar but still unique. It’s so enjoyable to watch you paint. Thanks

In colder weather do you have thick paints try to clump slightly. Does medium prevent or at least help that scenario. I usually avoid medium because I get to much. How much to use?
@chamberlainpaintings11 ай бұрын
I haven’t had trouble with paint clumping up but it doesn’t usually get below 50 deg during the day here in California. The wind can make it feel colder!

Hi Michael, do you have any advice on how you are able to finish a painting in one go on location? Is it just practice or is there something else to it? It takes me about a month working on and off a painting to finish it. Cheers
@chamberlainpaintings11 ай бұрын
Set a time limit, focus on big shapes and go for it. No expectation other than finishing in one go!
