Here is what really happened: It is the battle of the Wu Zhang Plains. Zhuge Liang is dying and orders Fei Yi, Jiang Wei and Yang Yi to carry out plans for retreat after his death. Jiang Wei would lead the retreat, while Wei Yan would be the rear guard. If Wei Yan disagreed, they were to leave without him. The three officers presented this plan to Wei Yan, who voiced his disagreement, stating that they shouldn't retreat because of "the death of one man". Both Wei Yan and Fei Yi took control of the troops and went back to the main camp to explain the situation to Yang Yi. They also told him that he was a civil official who didn't have a lot of experience handling military affairs, so that meant that Wei Yan had a chance of becoming commander. Wei Yan then let Fei Yi leave, but immediately regretted the decision and went after him, but couldn't catch up with him. It was then that he discovered that various encampments were preparing to leave in accordance with Zhuge Liang's orders. Furious, Wei Yan then attempted to halt the retreat, taking his unit and destroying the Shu army's escape route by taking out the gallery roads leading back to Shu. Wei Yan and Yang Yi then wrote separate letters to the capital accusing each other of treason. Liu Shan consulted with his advisors Jiang Wan and Dong Yun, who both sides with Yang Yi and viewed Wei Yan's actions as suspicious. Meanwhile, Yang Yi ordered his troops to rebuild the gallery roads and marched day and night to catch up with Wei Yan. Wei Yan reached the southern valley and ordered his troops to attack Yang Yi. Yang Yi responded, sending Wang Ping, who angrily shouted at Wei Yan for his treason. Knowing Wei Yan was in the wrong, his troops deserted him. With only his sons and a few followers, Wei Yan fled towards Han Zhong. Yang Yi sent Ma Dai after him, and Ma Dai caught up with Wei Yan and decapitated him, bringing his head before Yang Yi, who stomped on his head, saying "You inferior slave! Now, can you still commit evil?!" Wei Yan's family and close relatives were also executed.

Although I like Wei Yan as a character, killing him would really show Ma Dai's dark side that Koei described about him.

I thought I read in the history books that he revolted during their return to Shu and Ma Dai was in a ploy instructed by Zhuge before his death to join him. and when he shouted "who dares face me" three times Ma Dai cut his head off clean with a spear and not a giant paintbrush :)

@redhare57 well after Zhuge Liang's death a retreat was ordered back to the capitol for the Shu forces but Wei Yan wanted to keep pursuing the Wei army because he thought that they should take advantage of Wei still thinking Zhuge Liang was alive while the morale was still relatively high so he blocked the Shu army's retreat. Ma Dai was forced to kill Wei Yan since he wouldn't listen to everyone else from Shu, its kinda sad that he was forced to do it though :(

@redhare57 after the battle of wu zhang plains, the when the shu army was retreating, Wei Yan destoryed a bridge vital to the Shu retreat, and Ma Dai hunted him down and slaied him

It was never confirmed that was true. Both sides knew the other wanted to screw the other. Wei Yan was further away so he was scapegoated, though it didn't help that he destroyed an essential supply route.

@orellevi3009 no worries and yes exactly. Ma Dai was forced to kill Wei Yan because there was no reasoning with him and by rebelling he was putting several other lives at risk from attack by the Wei army, he had no other choice but to do it.

@orellevi3009 dude Wei Yan was rebelling and stopping the Shu army from retreating. He was endangering other lives by doing so and someone had to kill him in order to continue the retreat. It doesn't matter who was the one that killed him, if not Ma Dai then it would have just been someone else instead. Don't hate on Ma Dai, he did the right thing to do.

He didn't rebel against Shu. Ma Dai secretly was ordered by Zhuge Liang to kill Wei Yan because of his dislike of him and thought of him as a political and military threat which makes no sense because Wei Yan technically protected Shu after he died the double gates defense surrounding Hanzhong was around but around 20-30 years later Jiang Wei removed the formation which led to the annihilation of Shu. This proves that if Wei Yan was still around he would have been a challenge against Wei
