Dynasty Warriors 8: XL CE - Shu Story Mode 2 - Battle of Hulao Gate (Ultimate)

This is the Shu version of Hulao Gate, very similar to Wei but still pretty different. If you saved the peasants in the last battle then Zhang Jiao will actually appear to help in this battle, which is pretty cool. For this battle I defeated Lu Bu for once just to show it happening. He's normally damn near impossible to beat but if you have elements that deal damage based on HP percentage, like Cyclone or Slash, then it'll bypass his normally massive defense and rinse his HP. You basically have to use the most broken weapons to defeat Lu Bu on Ultimate cuz otherwise he'll just survive for so long you'll run out of musou and he'll kill you with one of his.
Also helps that I played as Zhao Yun for this, who has a all around pretty solid moveset with speed, range, power, and can combo really well. His R1 musou is one of the most powerful in the game and his others aren't too bad either. Can't really go wrong with Zhao Yun.

A weird thing I've noticed about Zhao Yun in the later games (starting in DW6) is that some of his outfit is turquise for whatever reason instead of green. It looks a bit uncanny considering he's, well usually with the green Shu side.

Even if you run out of musou you can keep dodging his musou attacks by switching your weapons as he does it since you have invincibility frames.

If you're lucky. It's pretty much a last resort since your switch has a small delay between spamming it. If you switch attack ends during, say, the middle of Armageddon Strike then it's pretty much killed you regardless.

Not Really. It pretty much depends on the weapon. Some weapons have long InvFrames and if you can get the timing right, its good mechanic to use to avoid a characters musou.

Zhuge Dan's switch attack yeah that's viable IF peons are nearby. But everyone else? No it entirely depends on the enemy's musou. A switch attack from a musou like Lu Bu or Cao Ren won't save you since they hit multiple times or have a lasting effect after the animation.

Zhao Yun's switch is not saving us against Lu Bu's regular Musou, or his R1. Maybe his aerial but I doubt it.

The only one that comes to mind with a reliable switch attack is Dian Wei’s. You can charge it and it’ll go on longer the more you charge it. There are some attacks that can cancel the charge so you gotta time it right but in reality it’s best to just avoid Lu bu all together. Plus there are like 2 characters with switch attacks that are instant but at the same time aren’t even “attacks” so relying on those just makes you look stupid

Completed on Ultimate difficulty, even maxed out Zhao Yun I got one shotted by Lu Bu when I killed Diaochan, he chased me up to Dong Zhuo'a location

Of course, if more than two of his normal attacks hit you, you're dead. And that's assuming you hold the weapon advantage. Any other time if he so much as breaths on you you'll die in one hit. You can still die in one hit if he decides to use his musou, two of which are unblockable.
