It's worth mentioning that Fan Castle meant the end of all peace between Wu and Shu. After this, Liu Bei lost focus and went after Wu when he should have pressed on against Wei. This ultimately lead to the destruction of both Shu and Wu. If this had not happened, it's possible Shu would have come out on top. Who knows?

shu march too far inside wu territory. and they lost. after that, shu march too far inside wei territory, and then lost again. the reason shu can develop so much was because they did expand progressively, not a long march as they did lose

I enjoyed the skirmish from the old games called "Guan Yu's Escape", when he has found Liu Bei but is fighting for Cao Cao. You'd control the God of War and protect the carriage while clearing 5 consecutive gates against 5 of the great Wei generals.

Facts bro!!! Fan Castle(and Yi Ling) basically were the fall of all major characters, from all three kingdoms…Cao Cao, Xiahou Dun, Lu Meng, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Yu Jin, Pang De, Cao Ren, Gan Ning, Liu Bei, Ma Chao, Huang Zhong, Guan Ping, etc…. And Chi Bi was just 🔥 pun intended

Sorry, a year late, but ... yeah. Fan Castle is just the start. God Guan Yu died, true, but before and during the Battle of Yi Ling, so many heroes of that era perished, esp for Shu kingdom. Even people like historically famous Huang Quan and Meng Da defected, while the famous vanguards like the Zhang Nan-s are generals who help built the province up are outright killed in battle. Didnt help that my real life idol Cow Cow and his likely real life brother Xiahou Dun passed away right before too. By the way, think Ma Chao didnt participate in this one. He was the big name stationed at Hanzhong's Mengjia Gate to keep enemies in check.

In terms of stage design, DW 8 did a great job with the map building. Hu Lao Gate was the best for me.

DW8 boasted my favorite interpretation of the Stone Sentinel Maze. Felt like a real break from normal gameplay. The most impressive to me was Fan Castle. Four different versions of that battle, and all of them might be top 10.

Hulao gate is classic to me in the game but the northern campaigns are so nostalgic to me for the book. Yiling is one of my favorites also due to the historical significance

Fan Castle and Chi Bi are so important Fan Castle: It's so miserable and desperate fight, Wei and Wu are trying so hard to kill Guan Yu going full force and Guan Yu trying so hard to make his last stand alongside with his children trying to flooding the castle with that heavy rain that makes the battle even more tense Chi Bi: Wu and Shu trying to hold everything to make their plan goes right (and really goes), and after that Cao Cao is having nightmares about how pathetic was his defeat and his lost fleet

Fan castle definitely number 1 for me. It was definitely a dramatic shift. And a impressive feat to defeat Guan Yu. Chibi is fun, Cao Caos only battle loss (other than the trap that got Dian Wei killed) . And I like the battle of Guan Du. I like that Zhao Yun could've potentially fought Guan Yu if it weren't for officer placements

He lost at Hanzhong as well (even though it was later). He also lost a few early battles against Dong Zhuo/Lu Bu I think.

@@DynastyZwarrior90 this is old but there’s plenty. Battle of the Han River and the battle of Wancheng are the two you’re thinking of but also the battle of Ruxu. You could also throw in battles like Jiangling that occurred after the battle of Chibi in Jing province. Also this is just battles he was personally commanding. Keep in mind at Chibi he had a 220k-50k advantage, and at Ruxu 400k-80k so it’s not like he was infallible. I think Lu Xun might be an even better battle commander because you have to remember Cao Cao’s true genius was being the whole package because real life isn’t dynasty warriors and at that time being a master of court politics was much more important that being a battlefield commander as emperors didn’t command men in the field anyway.

1-Hulao Gate: Everybody is there! And of course do not pursue Lu Bu. Still in every game it is hype point. 2-Battle of He Fei: Most nostalgic in DW3, it is final stage for some characters , first time beating enemy horde was challenging. This stage still good in later games. 3-Battle of Xia Pi: Lu Bu's demise, rare Wei-Shu alliance and challenging as well. My favorite versions are DW4 and DW7, it is decent in other games too especially in DW8. 4-Fall of Shu: That's a tricky choice, I'm implying three different stages , In DW4 the last battle against Shu after Wu Zhang Plains, in DW7 Jin's conquest of Shu and in DW8 Wei's hypothetical final 5-Battle of Chi Bi: Oh, nostalgia. I don't know the lore back than in DW2, I got fairly good start but out of knowhere a fire attack happened it turned out freaking nightmare and in some point Shu army attacks as well. It was really challenging. In DW3 it was annoyingly difficult, in DW4 good challenge than it followed historical path but DW8 hypothetical version is really interesting. 6:Battle of Fan Castle: Got really more importance later, kinda became ending for many Wei characters. Best versions are DW5, DW7 (beatiful ending) and DW8 7-Battle of Guandu: Another DW2 nostalgia. This time started disadvantage, again I knew nothing about lore, my base nearly fall, I desperately tried other path and suddenly I find secret supply base, massive morale boost. Guandu is always an enjoyable stage. 8-Yellow Turban Rebellion: Iconic beginning of the series. Again everybody is there. Why some games cut it from specific kingdoms is not understandable. Best version is DW4 , three different stage explores it so good. 9-Battle of Tong Gate: One of the unique battles, in DW4 you can make Han Sui defect. In DW7 and DW8 it is good stage as well. 10-Battle of Xia Kou: My favorite DW5 stage. Gan Ning's sudden apperence and him killing Ling Tong's father is hilarious. Gan Ning is a nightmare in this stage. DW4 version is not bad either, I don't remember if it remain in DW7 and DW8. Honorable mentions: Dong Zhou lives (DW4), Guan Yu's escape (DW3), Eliminate Zhang Jiao (DW4), Lu Bu's Revenge (DW 4), Lu Bu's Revolt (DW4). DW4 has best hypothetical stages.

While not as important , The Nanman Campaign has always been the one I most look forward to. I loved it since 3 (even if it was horribly overused between Shu and Wu). It's very tactical with having you capture Meng Huo all those times, has unique generals and mounts (usually), hiddens paths, tigers, great music, and on top of all that usually has a kinda' funny/goofy feel to it without the weight of most other battles.

True, I can see the argument for it, I found the Nanman campaigns to be tedious, just imo though, definitely an iconic stage though because of how different it is from every other stage

Agreed I think it was the first stage in which the terrain was changed 180 The terrain, the roster, all that special unit like tiger, all special area like acid pool, the map in some area can't be navigated, The battle where Meng Huo need to be defeated multiple time (doesn't help my English was so shit at that time I thought he was Mystic and reviving every time he defeated). Truly the moment where brute forcing doesn't do any good.

Fan Castle was a tremendous shift, yes. I don't think that Guan Yu's loss alone was as dramatic as everybody makes it out to be, but the fallout of his death certainly was. Guan Yu's troops being defeated and routed, meant Shu lost controll of a central province and a strong foothold. Shu's large scale attack on Wu would harm both their relations as well as both their armies, giving Wei a significant edge it was lacking when they were facing 2 kingdoms, rather than one. Liu Bei not being able to contain his emotions was what spelled the downfall for Shu and with it, the end of the 3 Kingdoms Era.

@@TheNightowlGaming after Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and Liu Bei followed shortly, I believe some of Zhang Fei's and Guan Yu's children were killed too... I don't remember other famous officers falling in their wake too (at least not on the side of shu) , but either way, some of the Shu Kingdom's corner stones were just taken away. Naturally it collapsed first of the 3.

Fan Castle was the most dramatic battle with Guan Yu almost single handedly beating Wei forces to the brink of total collapse. Guan Yu killed Pang De, captured Yu Jin, and almost had Cao Ren captured, too. And then Wu's betrayal quickly turned the tide of the war. Had Wu stayed out of this battle, Shu would have a decent chance to unify China.

Jei ting was a good fight after fan castle like Wei yan, jiang Wei and zhao yun and Zhang Liang were still alive in this time. In wei there was xu zhu and sima yi and wu Zhang plains all the playable Wei characters are dead in the actual story line except sima yi and a bunch of generals that aren’t really prominent so honestly wu Zhang he plains was fun because the challenge but also depressing. Jei ting was the last battle we’re at least a good amount of the roster was alive

I knew it would be chi bi it's one of the most iconic fights through my playthrough of dynasty warriors, it's one where omg I have to do this fight but not in a bad way. I still have that fight ingraved into my mind. I deffo remember getting like two shorted by lu bu so many times and god this is normal what is it like on hard I still to this day fear facing him

Agree with the choices, but would have a different order 1 Chibi 2 Hulao Gate 3 Fan Castle 4 Yellow Turban Rebellion 5 Wuzhang 6 Hefei 7 Yiling 8 Xiapi 9 Guandu 10 Changban Noteworthy that all 8 of the stages from DW2 are part of the list, with the other two being introduced in DW3 and DW4.

Not a big thing but just so you know the 3 kingdoms period doesn’t officially begin at the very least until Cao Pi forces the emperor’s abdication in 220 so the Battle of Fan Castle is technically not even a part of the three kingdoms period. Wei doesn’t conquer Shu till 264 and Jin doesn’t conquer Wu till 280 so the 184-220 is only about a 1/3rd of the way. It’s just that the book ROTK focuses heavily on the fall of the Han to set up the three kingdoms period. Remember this is a modern retelling of a 14th century retelling of the 2nd and 3rd centuries so we could be completely wrong about Guan Yu or Lu Bu.

Sorry, one year late ... Historically HuLao Gate isnt that biggy. But in the game ... DAMN~! Think on Hard mode, I had beaten Lu Bu just twice, max. That's as close as it gets to fighting a god in DW. And the cutscenes ... DAMN~! ChangBan bridge maybe isnt so important historically, but you actually made a good point. Historically, Zhao Yun did save baby Liu and Zhang Fei did stop the Cow army at the bridge. Yes, real life event. Wow. Else, have commented elsewhere. Dont mind if I just cut and paste my words there to here - "Fan Castle is just the start. Else, the battles on the list are all important. Nitpicking on Yellow Turban perhaps - it's the time when Cao Cao is just an official, Liu Bei just infantry, bro Guan Yu an archer (even during Hu Lao). Highest ranking is Sun Jian, just a general under Yuan Shu. And it happened all across China. But ingame? A fun battle, ha. Someone mentioned Tong Gate too. Damn straight. It's where Cao Cao truly swallowed the northwest. The reports kept coming that more and more reinforcements are arriving, totaling at least 100,000. Everyone was like, oh shit oh shit, but the more Cao Cao heard, the more he smiled. Think he LOL-ed at the very end of the reports. Someone asked, my lord, are you ok? Cao Cao explained - look, the tribes are mobile cavalry troops. If we have to chase them one by one, it would take years. But now, they came together and saved me the trouble. We can destroy them in a single battle. Everyone reflected, and applauded Cao Cao's genius. Xu Huang showed his too. One of the key generals (did Zhang He lead the vanguard? I cant remember everything. 😅) Suggested a few tactics, the main one been flanking them across the river. Scored another great victory, nothing special about this about Xu Huang at this point, ha. Jieting was Zhuge Liang's 1st and best chance. Have mentioned elsewhere how he blew it by politically choosing Ma Su, and everyone should know what happened next. The 2nd and 3rd/4th(?) are so non-eventful that even the story struggled Wu Zhang Plains was dramatic in story, but it's just Sima Yi chilling inside forts and repelling Zhuge Liang with the usual advantages. Guan Du consolidated Cao Cao's position in the entire north. All these battles can be in any order. As long as Chibi is number one. No way around it. If Zhou Yu didnt succeed, China would be Cao Cao's. (Maybe not a bad thingy, given how terrible wars are, but ... yeah. Life goes on.)

I would be remiss if I didn't point out a few things.... 1, Chang Ban was VITAL and you even made the argument that it should have been higher. You correctly stated without that battle outcome the way it was, there was no 3 kingdoms period. Correct. Cao wanted to kill Bei. Had he of captured him, Liu Bei would have been killed. 2, it wasn't the yellow scarves who started the rebellion. They were just the first big group to bring war. It was actually the Eunics that brought about the chaos of the land. It was them who caused the whole thing to start. The games ALWAYS left that pivotal aspect out for some reason.

My favorite battle in the series is honestly either Hu Lao Gate OR the battle of Chang Ban Fan castle is close in 3rd place for me though. Unfortunately DW9 rendition of chibi is just awful... no linked ships to run across even the "FIRE ATTACK" didnt set th3 ships on fire 🙄🙄
