I was in school on the 60's-early 80's. I was held back in second grade, was in the slow classes. My Mother tried everything. Hooked on phonics, individual teachers who made cassettes on pronounceation of words. Bribe me with comic books and have tuttors every summer. Not knowing what the real problem was. I was a very emotional child and very frustrated with learning. My Father was very good at math and did not understand why I could not understand algebra. My sister did not have an issue with it. I learned to hide multiplation tables during tests. In college, I had small books of formulas to get me through tests. Reading to this day is something I long to be able to enjoy. My daughter and my Father can go through a thick book in a day. I am lucky to get through the first chapter. Thank God for audio books. I have been working as a broadcast engineer for the last 40 years.
